We forgot the ball back one time, we were just lucky enough that our quarterback's had one each on the bus. We had three balls when we got to the field. Good thing it was early in the year and it was hot and dry!

We can't start practice till August 20th, and first game is the 31st of August. We are looking very fast but a little light up front. The thing that worries me is this was our worst year for attendance in the weight room. I know that doesn't mean a lot to some programs, but for us, our season pretty much goes as our off season went.
I just hope our speed can overcome the size difference we will see this year in our league.

If a sophomore is up the they better be starting. The one thing I always watch for though is their mental capacity, we have had a few start and they are just not mentally ready to be at the varsity level. We seem to have three or four sophomores start for us every year, at some point do to injury.

I have no hard feelings, when I have interviewed and have not got the job, it is probably for the best. Do you really want to be a HC somewhere they don't really want you, or your style? The interview panel is trying to get the best fit for their school and community and if they don't think what I had to say was for them then so be it.
Chalk it up to a learning experience and go kick butt where you are for another year! Make the big time who you are!

If you don't enjoy the journey, you will never enjoy the final destination! Take a kid that is a me kid, but doesn't get much if any playing time, the team may do really well, but the kid won't like the final outcome because he has hated the journey to get there. My favorite type of athlete are the ones that no matter what drill or exercise the coaches ask of them they do it with all their heart and they may or may not play a lot but they are a team player and they enjoy the final outcome.
If I didn't have fun on a daily basis working with young men out on the football field, I wouldn't coach regardless of the season record. I have had a few teams finish 3-7 and 2-8 and they were a great group of kids to work with, I enjoyed the journey with them, they just weren't very good football players.

I was the JV Basketball coach my first two years, but then basketball started going all summer long and I didn't have the time to do football and basketball and still have time for the family.

holmesbend,
wybulldogs hit it on the head, except we don't have any contact with our 7-9th graders they are at a different school and start at different times and don't do any fundraising, they just work on showing up on time and getting better at football. I will say this, we have been thinking of stepping it up a notch on the thank you notes that follow any donations that come in, with sending a old jersey or old helmet or something to the businesses that donate more then the individuals.

We are in rural area, we do much of the same Holmesbend! We did a letter Writing fundraiser for the first time this year and we made about 3 grand with it, we thought it was going to be a lot better. There are companies that will do the letter writing and thank you's for you. Poker tournament is an idea some of the coaches have been throwing around.

We have to do one practice because of how large our school district is and we have kids that can only get one ride into town to practice. what we do is go from 3-9pm with a 45 minute dinner and get off your feet time. We also use this for classroom time as well. If we have our OL guy that can't get there till 5:30 then we will start with Defense that day! The next day we will start on Offense because our DB coach can't get there till 5, the off-campus coaches give and take a little and we just do one long practice with a break in the middle. We have moms that bring trail mix and fruit and gatorade for the kids, the FB program supplies the kids with a Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwhich to go along with the other stuff.
Not perfect but it works for us!

What I wish there was more of at clinics:
1: Game Planning ideas and explanations of how they break down film and divide the work over their staff, and how they get info to players and install each week.
2: Program Ideas (HS), Fundraising, player relations, off-season work, exit interviews, things along those lines.
3:Open Forum integrated with the socials. I wish there was a table and a bunch of lets say Offensive coaches could go and they fill out a 2 question survey throw it into the bucket and the Table Master would pull one out and the table discusses the concerns written down.
The survey would be 1) What problem are you trying to solve this off-season? 2) What is your Offensive style or system?
I know there are coaches at the clinics I go to that have solved the problems I am having. I shouldn't have to (not that I won't or haven't) go introduce myself to 200 coaches just to find the one that had my same problem in a similar circumstance.
We have all encountered different problems and we have all encountered the same problems, I am just interested in solving them any means necessary!

70-80% of our kids play a winter sport! All athletes lift all year round in Class! High School athletes need to lift all year, because they are not strong enough to specialize in one sport and not lift through a season. I don't have any research to back it up, but in my 7 years of experience of teaching in the weight room, almost al of the serious injuries at my school have come from kids that either refuse to get into the weight room, or they are by kids that only play one sport and they play it all year round, so they are over use injuries.
We make all FB players that are not involved in a winter sport come in after school twice a week and do speed and agility training, with a little extra lifting sometimes.

Coachbdud,
I would not give my family up for anything, but man I kind of miss those days of single life and being married to the program. Everything you mentioned I would second as far as being a great assistant coach. I believe another thing that has to happen is that you have to talk up the program because by doing that, you are talking up the HC, and when young men see a grown man buying in 100% it makes it easier for them to buy in 100%! May be under Loyalty, but I thought it was worth mentioning!

I think another interesting thing would be is to see what types of kids and demographics everyone on here has! I know our staff would love to sit down and talk about successful things schools like ours have done, instead of the private school that recruits and gets the best kids so it doesn't matter what is done they are successful.

That was just terrible. I will say this, we tell our guys on both sides of the ball that during that situation we always take a step to load and protect our selfs. We go over this situation the first thursday practice of the year.
That really is to bad that the player was injured and I hope I never have to see that happen in person. That is disrespectful to the game and to his own staff. No staff would call a blitz in that situation, I hope!

Everyone on here starts well before the state of Oregon. Official practice starts on Aug. 22nd, but can not be in Full pads till Aug 24th. Everyones first game is Sept. 2nd and every level is done at the latest of Dec. 11th this year.
Oregon is probably one of the most laid back states when it comes to sports, which makes it difficult to have kids doing stuff year round. I would say 90% of all FB players play 2 sports, and 50% play 3 sports in Oregon. When sumemer comes the kids have a few options: A) Play summer Basketball games, B) play Baseball games or C) Go bust your butt in the weight room for the football staff. Let me tell you which one the kids pick the least! No other sports coaches in Oregon mandate the weight room for the most part.
It is easy for kids to go play basketball and baseball games, but it is hard work to lift and run in the summer. Football staff are the hard @$$es and kids will take the easy way if allowed at home.
That is why you are starting to see programs in Oregon that have 1000 or more students only be able to field a Varsity and Frosh/Soph team.

shields, we are very similar but we only have 3 coaches on each side so it is a little harder but scheduled just the same. We also get practice done in 2hrs and 15 minutes. We are a fast paced offense, we don't do a lot of conditioning once games start. We go from 3-5:15 on M/T/W, Thursday is a quick review and walk through!

I label the wristbands with there position on it, we only do 2 deep for varsity then the JV's and Frosh have 11 and must share. I wash them and air dry, and only a few of the skill guys went through more then 1 wristband in the year.

Anyone willing to write about the clinic and how practice looked in Eugene yesterday? I had prior comittments, so I was unable to attend but wish I was there!
Some of there staff spoke at other clinics and stated that Spring practice was open for coaches to come and watch, can anyone clearify for me?
Thanks!

I like the idea, I have actually wanted to do something similar around my area. I think it is naturally in all of us to compete, so I think it brings the best out in the athletes. I preach compete to my kids and they love to match themselves up to others in the area.

We have the weight room open for lifting and speed and agility 4 days a week. We do a week long camp in July. Our Spring Ball starts on May 28th and really could end when we want it to but usually the second week of June. 7 on 7 Tourny's we go to 3 everfy summer, I would like to go to more, but the kdis have basketball and baseball. We have a dead week the first week in August. We then have two weeks of conditioning before our one week of doubles, then on two the games.

You can write off up to 250 dollars of classroom related materials. Coaching is a second job for most of us. You really have to know your way around Turbo Tax or have someone do it for you, but all clinic material, 7 on 7, camps, meals, dvd's, anything you buy that the school did not reimburse you for is a tax write off.

As a previous post was on here (Best Practice Ideas), I think it would be cool to have a section for best drills and have video on it. I think this would help a lot of young coaches and it would also help all of us out by filming our drills to watch technique. We also know kids work harder and think about technique when they know they are being filmed.
