Coaches, It is about that time This year I am taking over a team that went 4-4 last year but should have probably run the table. I watched every game last year (my son is on the team) and all of their losses were very close games. Things about the team I know; 1. We have 9 GOOD athletes, no kids on this team are dominant but we have 9 kids I can put anywhere. 2. Special teams and Defense took a backseat in practice and it showed in games. This year I am running Offensive Day/Defensive Day practice schedule. Punt/Kickoff Return on Offensive days, Punt Return, Kickoff on Defensive days. Although they moved the ball decently on offense last year, with the single wing offense that I am going to install scoring points won't be an issue. Setting goals for your team is an important part of evaluating how your season went at the end of the year. For some teams getting to .500 would be great. If we don't win our league title this year I will be disappointed. I am no superman, but with sound offense, defense and special teams I know that this group of kids can do it. Tut

Last year we played 14 eleven year olds in an 11-13 year old division. Needless to say we took our lumps, but now we return 13 players (4 thirteen year olds, 9 twelve year olds) and got a quarterback transfer from another team. We were 0-7 last year, but this year I feel we can be a good 4-3, maybe 5-2 if we get the right bounce.

Out of curiosity - why are Pop Warner-youth teams starting practice in July?
We're a HS team. First practice isn't until August 6, first game August 23.

Most Pop Warner teams start August 1st. Our season is a bit shorter.

We started conditioning practice on Monday and next Week Monday the real practices start. Our first game is August 25th. The main reason we start so soon is coaching Youth takes sometime to teach fundamentals these are not High School players who typically lift and have 7 on 7 and football classes year round.
So each year you must in many cases teach the basics to 50% of the team each year unless you have a program built that runs the same stuff on every level and you are blessed to get the majority of players returning and moving up each year.
Yet still I won't have my full team in practice until 1 week and a half prior to the first game due to Travel Baseball, Family Vacations and kids at Summer Camps. On average out of the 5 weeks prior to the first game we might average 12 days/per player of actual practice prior to game 1 and in that timeframe you must install offense, defense, special teams and teach fundamentals to everyone.
We play in a highly competitive league and found out the hard way last year in our first year that you better be on top of your game as coaches and players otherwise you will get pounded.
He had plenty athletes last year and thought we would be pretty decent even in our first year, but we had no clue how competitive this league was. Many of the teams feed very good High School Programs and are very well coached.
Although we had the athletes last year we had 75% 1st time players and they were shell shocked. This year we are pretty loaded with experienced players and only about 35% first year guys. We were lucky to get an infusion of players from a catholic middle school that ended their football programs as well as a few kids from surrounding teams came over to us as well.
I will be highly surprised if we don't don't make the playoffs this year!

Im getting alot of my kids back from last year. We where one game from the superbowl last year. Today I had a coach transfer his kid to my team from different league. We went to age only this year. I coaccoac11/12. Yr olds. This is the biggest baddest 12 yr old I have ever seen and I have coached true talent. This kids oldest brother is in the nfl as a rb, his second brother is in h.s. and has d1 offers. Yeah we should dominate this year. No more than two losses but if I draft good I see us undefeated.

Huge pointer when drafting, if you don't know the kid draft the oldest kids. Birthdates on draft day are priceless. Sounds like you are primed for a great year!

We can't start practice till August 20th, and first game is the 31st of August. We are looking very fast but a little light up front. The thing that worries me is this was our worst year for attendance in the weight room. I know that doesn't mean a lot to some programs, but for us, our season pretty much goes as our off season went.
I just hope our speed can overcome the size difference we will see this year in our league.

Your Pop Warner team has offseason weights? WTF? You would be surprised there is a team in our league that has their own field, indoor facility and weight room. They also have a Travel Baseball program so they keep these kids in the programs year round. They have a weight room and off-season lifting 2 days a week. We play them Game #1 and we will beat them anyway!

We started on July 9th. Way too early in my opinion. I asked the league president why we start so early but I never got a good answer. The first game is not until August 25th. Most of my kids are still out of town at grandma's house. Which at this time of summer they should be.

Practices start August 6th for me and I guarantee you that I will practice LESS than all of the other teams in the league and I think I just might win the league this year. Funny how that works out.

No clue why any youth team has to start practices before the 2nd week in August. Starting before that is crazy. This is youth football, not high school.

Most of my kids are still out of town at grandma's house. Which at this time of summer they should be. This was like the situation with the Gun Hill Rebels Pee Wees in 2008. Basically, it's baby sitting or day camp. They expect most of the kids not to show up on any given day. Makes for a mess. With the NBYSA in 2007, they did have "camp" weekly in June, maybe even late May, but then they took a month off before formal practices started.

If you start playing games on August 18th you would We start practice on July 30th- 3 weeks until game 1 We will practice less than our competition and in the last 5 years we have had the best winning % as an Org in a 100+ team league Up North is starts snowing in late Oct, early Nov Also with daylight savings time no lights after late OCt MANY leagues want to be done by then We arent a rec league- the kids want to play 10 games That is the Clue
