Bend and Mt. View High Schools always put one on every June! It is usually Graduation weekend which gets me out of duties at it. They run it very well, not a true tourny, just play a lot of games, Varsity and JV divisions. There may be one held in Medford in July from what I here down there!

What are you looking at for cost? We attend the Cascade Team Camp in McCloud, CA. I believe the price is 125 a kid.

I stopped my subscription for the same reasons, I am a PE/Weights guy and I don't catch a whole lot of grammatical errors but I did in the later articles.
Does anyone know anything about the Coaches Choice website and why their online magazine stopped publishing in June of 2010, I really liked their articles.

Everyone is so intereted in the X's and O's, I want to know more about planning (practice, games, off-seasons). How to get your Jimmy's and Joe's to perform at a higher level. What to look for from the box and how that helps you.
I would love to see articles on these sort of things!

There is no need to be in playing shape, but to regularly get a good sweat going is a good thing. I teach in the weight room all day and then coach the QB's/OC. During FB season I workout before school, some kids may come in to do make ups but for the most pasrt it is just me. After the season I lift after school and yes there are a few guys that come in and see me and then word spreads that I workout and the respect is much easier to get when that happens. When kids come in after school I am not super worried with what they are doing because I know they hit their Cores and good stuff in class. We have 6 Athletic Conditioning classes.
I have always believed in the "Practice what you Preach" Motto That doesn't mean you have to be doing Squats and Cleans, just means stay in shape and get a solid workout in with good work ethic.

Gold Beach Football Camp is a great camp, they have 3 weeks of 16 teams. I think the pricing is under 200 a kid! Here is there link: www.gbftc.org/There is one late in July that we go to because it starts as our summer school is finishing up. It is called the Cascade Team Football Camp. Here is there Link: www.cascadeteamcamp.com/Both are good camps, both are very good for the price per athlete. With experience from going to both, the Cascade Camp is a little better, thats just my opinion. Cascade Camp the coaches are treated better and I mean TREATED! If you are trying to teach family and brotherhood on your team, Coach Hunsaker does a great job with his team and shares his ways, and his players demonstrate what discipline looks like on the field. Like I said both camps are great for the price and you will continue to go if you go once, because of the bond you create and the kids create with the other teams, our kids take extra shirts and hats and trade with other players from other teams, it is a great experience.

I am in 100% agreement that the weight room is the #1 Program Builder!
A little off topic, but, how do some of you get kids to compete to be the best in the league or the state? We have some kids that stop getting better once they know they are the best at the school. Our Sophomores don't want to compete to play varsity and half the juniors are content splitting time between JV and Varsity. How do you change that?
Thanks,

I am not sure if this is where it started or not but I remember reading about it in a book called, "Coaching Football Technical and Tactical Skills"
It is a great book for any level and any experience of coaches. It just breaks things down to the basics and reassures you that you don't need anything but the basics to be successful. We all see and hear what the nearest University or the power house teams are doing, but we forget that they probably weren't doing those things before they got there.

What is the harm in showing them? Maybe 1 kid gets inspired or maybe 40 kids get inspired. If it is no time out of your schedule then I say let the man continue. I like them and I am sure all coaches get them and understand the underlying statements but some teenagers are so mentally immature they just can't grasp the hidden messages that are their.
I wish I had someone doing them every week, maybe I would call a better game after watching it friday, doubt it would make me worse...

Never blame the kids in the paper. As the Header you must shoulder the blame every time, because guess who gets the credit for the wins. Our header does an excellent job doing just that, and us assistants stand right by him and as far as the kids can see we take the blame and tell the kids we did not prepare them properly. If the kids believe in the staff and they love the staff they will work harder for them, especially if they know the staff has there back in the rough times.

Friday night game, after game unwind at HC house. Sat morning kids come in and lift, run and watch film and they are gone by 11:30. Coaches breakdown next opponent, and brainstorm ideas for next week. Sunday is a family day HC and I usually talk over the phone to organize mon. practice and review what the two sides have come up with as a game plan. I like having the entire day of sunday to spend with my family and to watch film on my own time.

We just ask that they wear their Jersey on each GameDay! The kids buy their own so we don't care if their Girlfriend has their other jersey on. We have had players lose their jersey's so they wear one of the extra ones, and then they go out and buy another half way through the season. They bought it, they can do with it as they please.
I like the dressing up thing for away games but it is not my program, and I really don't want to police it, I have enough to worry about on game day!

The program has been a losing program right??? I would tell them "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten"
It took our staff 3 years to break the kids of this! We now have kids that know what we mean when we say that the Intensity needs to be picked up!
Maybe I am wrong but I have found that you will never get 100% intensity running gassers and other conditioning drills. I have found that the best way to get intensity is to keep the kids on their toes with Sudden Change and new competition drills.

Have QB's break them in by throwing one hoppers to each other, I also always throw our new ones in the dryer for about 10 minutes with a few towels. The one hoppers are fun for the kids to try to do and it only takes about 10 throws a piece, works best on natural grass!

I think there should be a ton of Organization work done in the class, and then you need to get practical experience. If I had to go back to school and do it again, I would say I wish they would have stressed the organization more. I also think roundtable style may help a bit too. Everyone talking about their own experiences will help so that they all can learn from each others mistakes and triumphs.
One thing I would suggest, is as a class go over a mock year in a program as a head coach, making everybody write down what the daily needs are. All the paper work you are in charge of. Budgets, inventory, PARENTS, Kids!
I think this would be a great course to teach, I would have a blast!

Quarter Training! We will go for 12 minutes doing 6 second sprint and 12-18 rest! Then a 7 second sprint and a 14-21 second rest, then a 8 second sprint and then a 16-24 second rest. We just keep going for 12 minutes. This is more like game conditioning and it trains the appropriate energy system.
We use gassers and other longer ones in the summer to build a base a little but we won't run them in season, unless we use it for consequences!

We got the shaft on the new districting of the state. We get 3 home games and 5 away, with the closest away game at 28 miles, and the furthest at 183 miles away, with three others at 156 miles away! Needless to say our kids will be missing school on Friday's and one of our motto's has to be Road Warriors!

Why can't the kids use the first 1/4 mile to jog get loosened up and the next 1/4 mile to do their dynamic warm ups. Hit the field ready to go. I would post something half way and coach the kids on what to do!

Drills and skills in the spring! We do not condition in the spring! I agree 100% with brophy on the 2 reasons why you would condition in practice. We are luck y to have 4 Athletic Conditioning classes throughout the year and all of our Varsity guys are in there and 80% of our JV and 85% of our freshman are in there so there is no need to condition during practice unless you are training mental toughness which we do on occasion! We require 85% attendance over Summer and 100% attendance the 2 weeks prior to 2 a days. It works for us and we will have same schedule this summer.
Good luck to everyone in spring ball and summer training, we can't start our spring ball until June 1st.

Film is an essential tool in all winning programs were I am from!
Sat. Morning Film of Friday nights Game and Lifting Session Sun. Completely off (Family Day) Monday Film make up for misses on Sat. before school at 6:30 Tuesday at Lunch last 15 min of lunch in position coaches room. Wednesday after Practice watch as a whole O or D for 15 minutes. Thursday kids can watch on own if they choose. Kids can come get a DVD anytime to take home.
We have a worksheet for each position to fill out by practice Wednesday! The kids do learn better in short burst. We would like to have our Computer labs open and be able to use on Sat. but we will see on that one.

I have not run the 40 in over 8 years with my kids! When does a FB player run 40 yards in a straight line? we try to mold drills to be game like situations and we try to make the weight room as significant to the field as possible, so why would we run the 40?
I run the kids in the 20 yard dash and this is for all athletes in all sports! 20 yards is close to home to first in baseball, a turnover in basketball, KO in football, half of a dig route, you get the point. It is more sport specific.

I have done it the way Coach Huey is talking about! I liked it a lot and felt that the JV players were more ready for Varsity time if someone got hurt or what have you!
Currently here is how we coach: 3O/D3 1-QB/RB 2-OL 3-WR 4-DB 5-LB 6-DL and then we have 1 payed at the frosh and 2 vol. assistants at the frosh to make 3. We have 1-2 other Vol guys that make it when they can.
We dabbled in Platooning last year and then went away from it but then went back the last four games and had a huge success. 70% of time was on focus side and 30% was on second side. Our stud athletes that we needed to go both ways still did, but they pick things up faster and are the best even if they didn't practice on that side!
we had a few players end up getting all-league that were not that caliber of player till they started practicing 70% of the time 1 way.

Our Frosh Team is made of 1 and a couple old Frosh at 15!
JV is made up of Soph and Juniors so 15 - 17 yaers old.
Varsity is for the best of the best Soph through Senior and the rare occasion that a frosh is a man child and can play at that level but we like our frosh to stick together to generate as much success as possible for that class.

I say make them do the scout team or go fight for a starting spot on the other side of the ball! Even our starting QB practices on the D side because he may have to go in to play FS for us.
Our Scout team is made up of the next best offense possible. When it is #1 D we have all 1st team Offense that is not on the #1 D playing scout team to give the best look possible, more realistic game prep for Friday night! We will have the JV O go against the #1 D for some situations but not very often.
