Taking them on a college visit is a great idea! If you contact the college staff they may be willing to sit down and talk with your athletes and give them a clear vision of what it is that they look for in athletes they recruit. Give the college coaches a little background knowledge of the athletes behaviors.
I know from being a college coach for a while, that Character does matter in their recruits! In high school they may be God's gift but at the D1 level they are just another guy that is replaceable by a dependable kid just as athletic.

Don't steal practice time from the Defense, if they can't score they can't win!!! If I feel we need a little extra time with something I will have a group of kids come in in the morning or at lunch on Monday or Tuesday and do stuff with them. I have found that when you make a special time to meet every once in a while the kids feel pretty special and we get a lot out of the morning sessions we have!
Hope this helps.

My biggest problem with quitters is that the rest of the kids on the team are still best friends with them. I remember when a kid quit my sophomore year and I never saw that kid again after that until I received my senior year book and pointed at his picture and said "There's that kid that quit!"
If kids would give the quitters a hard time they would never wear the gear!

My feeling is that a Jr. that is not good enough to help win games on the varsity will probably not help much as a senior. I want my sophomores taking all the reps they can get on JV we also have a few freshman swing Fr./JV they get 5 quarters a week. I think that by playing Jr.'s on JV you are hindering your entire program. Plus you give kids and their parents a false sense of success.
This happened to me - Jimmy's dad comes to me and says, man the varsity basketball team is going to be good next year. I say, yeah why is that (varsity record 0-14 league). Dad says, well the JV team has went .500 in league and they are Jr.'s so they have a year left to get better. I explain to him that those Jr.'s went .500 against Fr./So.'s all season and the other teams Jr.'s were playing Varsity, so they have a years worth of varsity experience.

coachfetty,
I feel your pain, I have been teaching on my emergency license for 3 years now, I have a bachelors and a masters in my content area (PE), I then got another masters in Sec. ED and now I have to pass the Praxis which is 3 test for PE. What is education coming to where good people that are qualified can not just teach and coach high school kids.

We are on block scheduling and I like it! I plan two workouts a week, both full body, some sort of speed and agility every day after warm-ups. I use Fridays as a review day. I will review something or emphasize a specific lift, and then we will get a solid lift in but save time for a competitive game of some sort.
At first I didn't think we would see good gains only lifting 2 days a week and then 3 days the following week, but we have. We test at the end of every 9 weeks.

I would take a bunch of plates (25,35,45) and store them in your football EQ Shed, also use a lot of med balls, barbells for overhead squats, A lot of BW squats and plyo's, stadium stairs. Tire flips, tire pulls, farmers walk, tons of plyos' to make up for the cleans and squats.
The biggest thing is don't let the kids see that not being in the weight room affects you and it will not affect them.

It is a terrible time to be looking for a job! I have seen now three schools that have past up better candidates for retired guys in the community because there are no teaching jobs available right now. People always say they want the best for kids but what they really mean is they want what is best for kids under these circumstances and they tell you we have no teaching position, you must retain all coaches from last year and you have no budget to work with. Two Mills just laid of about 30% of there employees so that was a lot of our parents that are now in the unemployment lines.

It is not a scam, it is a great opportunity to see the land down under. I went my senior year, and my team won both of our games and then they replayed our championship game later that night in the night clubs. It was a great experience.
If you think it is a scam, my suggestion is to contact the coach for your state who is responsible for getting players together.

You know I always think that there should be more kids in the weight room! I am happy with what the kids have been doing so far, the ones that are in there. Out of the returning V/JV players all are in the weight room except for 10. Of those 10, 6 are question marks if they will even come out. They were Jr.'s that warmed the JV bench. The other 4 did not have room to take weight training because they are taking classes at the local college every other day! (Darn Smart kids) LOL!
We just had max week last week, on average the kids gained about 9% in their 3 core total which is cleans, squats, and bench. We also test in the 20, VJ, PA, 40, Broad Jump, Mile.
What is your weight room philosophy based on? Mine resembles Coach Carlisle's from USC and a little from Coach Remedios!

I as a player had a HC that had all of us get on a knee and grab each others hand and we all would say 3 different positive affirmations. The HC would say it and then in unison all the players would repeat it three times. After the 3rd one the HC would say "Beat the Vikings" or whatever the mascot was of the opponent. 1st Affirmation- 1/2/3 2nd Affirmation- 1/2/3 3rd Affirmation- 1/2/3 Beat the ______-1/2/3 Then we hit the field for the national anthem and we were off and running. I felt it put every player into the right mind set.
I will say this, when you have 50+ players speaking in unison it sounds AWESOME, I always got the chills when we did this.

When did kids stop wearing jocks? When did they stop showering after practice or games?
Does this happen everywhere or is it just at my school.
We have kids that wear there boxers under their girdle and they are coming out the top! Or we have players that sag their football pants! We had about 100 players 9-12 and there were 4 kids that showered after practice and games. For some reason it just absolutely disgusts me. I know it shouldn't because it is not my body, but it does for whatever reason.
I am applying for a Head Job and just curious to see if any of you make your players shower after games especially road games before getting on the bus to go home?
How do you approach this topic with the parents?

Coaching is coaching! He may take his system and just continue to coach high school coaches and programs how to install his system and be just fine.
I would guess that his competitive side will get the better of him and he will be back and before it is all said and done he will be at a major college and be a force!
Just my opinion but very likely!

I think they should be the National Champs! The sad stat is that USC will get more votes for National Champs then the Utes! I would like to see Utah, USC, Florida, Oklahoma play in a playoff to see who is the national champs. I really think Utah or USC would end up on top after all was said and done.

I don't mind seeing points as long as they are earned, not just big plays and zero defense. A good game is a good game I don't care what the points are as long as there is good O and good D.

coachbdud, I don't think that is wrong. Give some and get some, when joking. Now there are boundaries but that is just funny. We preach to our team that we are family, and families joke with each other, and you can not take a joke then do not dish one out. I had a player that started for me as a So. at MLB and was a tuff nose kid, he was the varsity 171 pounder and wrestled the defending state champ second week of wrestling. He got pinned in the second by the defending state champ holding him upside down around the waist, holding his shoulders to the ground. The local paper got a perfect shot of it, and I cut it out and taped it in this players PE locker, when he opened it up he was furious. When he found out it was me he just laughed and then said coach yours is coming. I am getting a little worried because I believe he is brewing something big. It is all fun and games. We made sure that we talked to our kids before the season about boundaries when joking around. The main thing was that you don't joke about your teammates or coaches families and especially girlfriends or wifes.

I think you have to analyze it a bit more. I thin it depends on what type of offense the schools run and who is the QB coach/OC. Look at some of the OC's and I bet the same ones send multiple QB's into the NFL. I would also imagine that QB's that have the same OC for 4 years are more likely to play NFL then ones with multiple OC's in their career. Just my guess though!

Maybe you guys can help me out but the state of Oregon is a hard one to find someone. I would have to say #1 is: Won state titles in baseball, basketball and football at Jefferson High; 1962 Heisman Trophy winner at Oregon State. Terry Baker#2 is: Defensive lineman went to 11 Pro Bowls with Cowboys from 1961 to '74; played in two Super Bowls. Bob Lilly#3 is: Ten-time Pro Bowl player had 52 interceptions and 2,246 kickoff-return yards from 1964 to '77. I teach 2 Freshman athletic conditioning classes (COED) I also teach 2 athletic conditioning classes (10-12 MALES only) and then I teach 1 female athletic conditioning class (10-12)
We have all athletes in the weight room together because we feel that it helps create a team atmosphere, it also creates competition everyday.
The biggest factor we have found in the 3.5 months of having these classes is that the intensity level of the athletes has been better especially the freshman Male and Female.

Well to start I look for a 1 on 1 player that can go deep to play my X position. I then like a well rounded player that can rush the ball as well to play my H. My Y is going to be similar to my X just opposite side of the ball and he will be a bit quicker I have a few more screens for him. My Z is my best offensive player all around can run catch and has the moves to make people miss. Lots of screens and under routes. My Z and H are the WR's that move sides of the ball for different formations, X & Y stay on their sides and they are always the outside WR. My F is a back that has great hands I like to throw to the backs. I do have formations were my F is outside of my Y and X.
Each coach must look for what he can utilize the best in his players.
Hope this helps!

Do what your kids can be successful at! Those that you mentioned might be to much for the kids to comprehend, especially if you are trying to go no-huddle. Before being a OC you better have your ducks in a row, and have an offensive philosophy. You will coach what you know better then you will coach what you like to watch. Just my 2 cents here

I know it is not likely but I would love to see TT and USC play for the BCS Title. USC's Defense has only allowed 23 points in their last 24 quarters of play! Don't quaote me but I believe they have the best pass defense in the nation right now. TT is on the other end of the spectrum with their points per game and I think they are in the top 3 for passing yards per game.
It would be a fun game to watch none the less!!!
