How many head coaches have you served under both as a player and as an assistant coach? I thought about making this a poll but the variety of potential responses is just too wide.
I played under 6 (3 in HS, 1 in college, 2 in semi-pro) and am coaching under my 6th as an assistant so my total is 12.

Fourth year as a coach, first as a head coach (middle school). Including myself, I have worked with four different head coaches.

HS - 1 Coaching HS - 1 Now I'm a head coach. Lowest total? So far but I've seen guys on here who didn't play football and weren't coaching yet so a "0" is possible,

Playing 2 - Rec. 2 - MS 1 - HS
Coaching 5 - (Middle School), although one of those 5 was the head coach three different times. There was also an interim coach who led us through spring, but took a high school job midway through the summer. Add one more if I can count myself.

Player:
HS-2 Club-2
Coach Youth-1+me Club-1+me HS-3
I've counted hc's for different levels in the same program as separate, because they always behaves as mostly independent entities.

Playing I had two in high school, coaching I've served under two before being named Head Coach.
I also had two in middle school, so overall we're looking at six.
I've also got two years served as an official, so when I question a call it means something.

2 in HS - my HS career was like "Remember the Titans" except we didn't go undefeated or win the state championship Don't know why but that line got me laughing... Played under 2 but it was a longtime coach retiring and the longtime DC taking over so it was pretty seamless. Student teaching I worked with 1, first real job 1, current job am on the 2nd. 6

Is this thread to see how diverse a coach's experience could be at a certain point as a result of the head coaches they have been players for assistant coaches with? Just wondering what the purpose of the thread is?
This could speak to how volatile a coaching situation existed at your high school or college or how much of a revolving door the head coach position has been at the places you've coached or vice versa.
Is this leading into a discussion about those circumstances or are we just men thinking about our "number" all over again just in a different context. We're always thinking more is better aren't we? Well I'll throw mine out there...
H.S. - 1 College - 1 Coaching - 3
So 5 all together. I went to a high school that was traditionally a losing program. My head coach came in my sophomore year and stayed through my senior year. He was able to lead us to our first 7 win season in 30 years and our first post season berth in the history of our school.
At college, I had two different defensive coordinators, but my head coach was near the middle of what would end up being a 20 year tenure as head coach at the school. He retired after last football season.
I was an assistant coach while I student taught and during my first two years of teaching/coaching I was an assistant for two different head coaches. I got my first head coaching job three years removed from college and this fall will be my 6th season as a head coach.
5 years at a challenging program and this year will mark my first season at a traditionally strong program (2 losing seasons in the previous 35 years). The last program I was at had that many winning seasons durin that same stretch.

I said "just wondering" and I meant it. If there isn't a purpose for the thread, then there isn't a purpose for the thread. It's just a list of numbers. Some large, some small...that's all, nothing more. I thought maybe the numbers would be used to validate a belief or statement. Yes, you're absolutely right. Nobody should be counting themselves I would think. But, again, is it that big a deal? Should we really scrutinize somebody for doing that when the numbers are not being used to support or refute anything. It's just a small talk thread amongst coaches.

I'll start by saying that I'm not even slightly miffed ("miffed" probably being the lowest setting on the "pissed-off" scale) by any of this. The question is simply one of curiosity, no different from, "Hey, where are ya from?". As for counting themselves among HCs for whom you've worked, that wasn't scrutiny. It was just defining our terms.
