I held morning workouts prior to having our son....got most of the b-ball kids. Worked great! HC held after school hours too. Maybe when my son is older we can do it again.

Get with your basketball coach.
Our's told his players, "If you want to earn more playing time....lift weights...and play football."
He loves having linebackers as forwards and quarterbacks as point guards.
Hopefully your B-ball coach has the same mentality.

Just did the registration and hotel booking for the Minn., MN Clinic on 17-19 FEB for me and my HC.
VERY EXCITED!!
The only clinic I have been to is a small local one here in the U.P. (Escanaba).
What are some tips for getting the most out of it? Scribble notes like crazy? Introduce yourself to other coaches/presenters?
Anyone else going to this one?

After games eventually I had to tell them "I'm going to bed. I don't care how long you stay but pick up the empties and turn out the lights." I'm the only one married with a 1 1/2 year old... I'm a "1 beer and outa here" kinda guy!

I think it depends on the group your with. When I speaking with players or younger coaches than I...I feel like a veteran.
When at a clinic or on coachhuey.com....I feel like a rookie!

I started as the assistant 7-8th grade coach
Following year: HC for 7-8th grade Following year: Assistant for JV Following year: Assistant for Varsity
The year I was the assistant JV, I applied for the Varisty job, but the HC hired a guy he had coached with before...he didn't know me very well yet.
Just like pvogel said: its who knows you.
My 2 cents, JVD

I did this last night: My wife was headed downtown to meet with one of her friends who lives out of town (My son and I had boys night home...and watched college football...).
I knew my HC would be there so I diagramed out a new defense on a napkin to hand to him when she got there!

I live in L'Anse (Near Michigan Tech) If it's in K-zoo....it would be about a 10 hour drive for me. Might have to stick to the Escanaba clinic!!

We have a 4 foot x 4 foot white board in our weightroom (gathering spot for players pre/post practice) We post base offense/defense...favorite plays....best players and any tricks we know about. For the last game of the year my LB's had on their wrist coach the top tendency by down and distance. They really liked that...said it gave them some focus. I'll probebly continue that. Coach, do you guys review that report in a meeting fashion before practice? Yes. At some point we go over it. Usualy it's at our post game meeting on Friday night. We talk about that nights game, then look ahead to next week. As the week goes on (and I'm able to look at more film) I post more info on the board. I don't go over that with them, but players stop and check it every day.

just a point of curiousity, is there any point to cowboy collars? I understand things like rib protectors but is there actually any use to a cowboy collar? Same Question! Do they look "cool"? Yeah....they do... I don't get it....

Quote: I started coaching in 2011, and due to my completely thorough track record I can say that you're completely wrong... Kids today are just weak and soft and think that looking good translates to playing well.
SO TRUE!!! I love all the armbands, bicep bands, colored pre-wrap, eye black stickers, gloves, UA beanies, multi-colored mouth peices.... HA! We had blue jerseys with 3 yellow stripes on the sleeves and yellow jerseys with 3 blue stripes on the sleeves....that's it! We seemed to play okay. Just imagine if I would have had all that other crazy stuff!!! I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!! HA HA HA!!
Back on topic: Football was important to me...and to a lot of my friends...but I know there were kids on my team that didn't play much...they didn't work at it either.
Great insight....teachers say the same about students.... ;D

I have just started doing that this year. I put all the plays in a spreadsheet so I can sort them by differen things: Down, Distance, Hash, Formation, ect.
I had 2 films on one team, and I made one "super spreadsheet".
That showed me a lot more. I saw that 3rd and short they never threw a pass. 2nd and long they almost always did. I learned that they only threw screen out of one formaiton, so if they were in a different formation, our guys knew they could get after the QB if he droped back.
It's far from perfect, but it made me feel more confident in my playcalling (defense).
I scout film for scheme....the local paper for studs.

I have a JV player stalk me on the sideline and annotate their offense and the defense I call against it. He gets to wear his jersey and be on the sideline of a varsity game..
In the second quarter I start asking him what's working. At the half he marks (by down) the opponents runs/passes; left/right/center; etc. (These are USUALLY the same as what I saw on film...but sometimes there are surprises.) I also have him see what the top 3 defenses were and the bottom 3.
Seems to help me keep it organized in my brain and (I feel) call a better 2nd half.

Up north if a team goes far enough, they do bump into basketball season...but more importantly...HOCKEY SEASON!

Scrimmage..... Sure...when offense is on offense, they will be good.....but so will the defense. When defense is on offense, the will probably be laughable....but so with the other side of the ball.
Might be a "fun" way to show EVERYONE that all the jobs on the team are important. Probably don't have to go long...2 or 3 series both ways.
My 2 cents. JVD

Wow...that sucks... Why the cap?
It's a shame because some of those kids that might not make "the cut" could turn out to be some fantastic football players later in life.
For middle school I guess I would start with these: - 20 yard dash (I tried 40 when I coached middle school....it was pretty far...wish I would have done 20) - 15 yard shuttle run (3 cones 5 yards apart) - Pushups for 30 sec. (Alt. to bench press...)
I would do everythign I could to convince "them" to let me keep everyone.
Hope this helps, JVD

Ask any college football coach, and I'm sure you'll get an earfull on their thoughts about "one sport athletes." Closest college coach might be a good resource. Talking with an assistant from St. Norberts he said, "If a player tells me the only played football, I say, Oh....I'm sorry...I thought you were an athlete."
Heck, as the B-ball coach too! I heard a story about Tom Izzo (Michigan State...duh) going on a rant about how he was tired of recruiting "1 sport athletes."
Also, it's been mentioned before, but having other coaches (and parents) educated on the benifits. Our Varsity B-ball coach (2nd year) told all of his players at the banquet. "If you want to earn more playing time....lift weights.....and play football."
Hopefully that will help! JVD
