I just want to check the "it's not what you know, but who you know" theory.

its who knows you! I know Urban Meyer but he doesnt know me. haha
I met a coach while working a summer camp. He introduced me to his boss.
Its always funny the way things work out. You just never know.

My wife worked in the district and had talked me up. They let me run their Spring conditioning program while I subbed in district. They liked it and hired me as a coach then as a teacher. Been here 5 years.

I started as the assistant 7-8th grade coach
Following year: HC for 7-8th grade Following year: Assistant for JV Following year: Assistant for Varsity
The year I was the assistant JV, I applied for the Varisty job, but the HC hired a guy he had coached with before...he didn't know me very well yet.
Just like pvogel said: its who knows you.
My 2 cents, JVD

Went to an inner city school (which basically means I coached black kids...because in the administrative world apparently there is a difference) Around here, in administrative parlance the euphemism is being an "urban educator."

My wife's coworker's husband's friend was coaching a youth team, and he moved at the end of the season, leaving it to me, and got me connected to the HS program, and in the offseason between those two teams I called the club program on a whim (Zero connection between them), and my reputation had preceded me via a mutual contact. So, yeah.

"...my wife's coworker's husband's friend..." - WOW! Yeah, that's got to lead to Kevin Bacon somehow.

Was hired as a teacher and volunteered to coach and when a paid position was available I was offered it. Been here now for 28 years including 4 as the HC. Back to coaching freshman.

I have done it both ways....I got all my college jobs because I knew someone or knew someone that did...MY HS jobs I got because I interviewed....Had 5-6 interviews before I became a HC

My former position coach got the job in 2006 while I was away at Grad school. 2007 rolls around and its June and a friend of mine was on staff as a WR coach, coaching has always been in my blood so I figured if he was doing it I had better get cracking. 5 years later I am the offensive line coach and head Junior Varsity coach and he never coached a down (YET, I am still working on him) at the school but is a HELL of a track coach.

At my previous stop:
I was in my second job, looking to move to something else, felt I had progressed as much as I could at the time. I had been coaching for 6 years.
I sent out some resumes, feelers really. I didn't have much luck and it looked like I was going to be back at the same school.... not a big deal.
The school I ended up going to had a coach leave in the middle of the summer. This school was near home, my dad was real sick at the time.
The HC asked his ACs to call around and see if there was anybody out there. One of the ACs called a college buddy for some leads. This college buddy went to his head coach and asked him. That HC reached in his drawer and pulled out a resume and said, "If I had an opening, I would hire this guy." That resume was mine.
This AC went back to the HC and gave him my name (he didn't know me from Adam). Another AC was around and said, "I know coachwoodall, he would be a he!! of an addition here." The rest is history.
So for that job, I knew a coach who coached with another coach who knew another coach at another school who worked with his HC that like my work and was referred to the HC who hired me.

First job, I got a teaching gig at semester (graduated in dec., had a job in Jan.) Got there and started asking about coaching, one of the AC's became the principle, I was in. 2nd (current) job, got hired at one of the Junior Highs in district, called every high school (4 in district) about coaching. This one called me back, met with HC, got hired. Combination of luck and legwork each time.

Got hired for a teaching gig. HC remembered me from my playing days in a nearby down asked if I wanted to coach freshmen. When the line coach that he'd coached with 20 years had some health issues I became a varsity assistant and coached the line. A couple years later I got promoted to coordinator/assistant hc. Change in administration made the teaching part of the job unbearable so applied for a teaching job/hc job at another district. That AD was good friends with my AD...

My First HC job was at a small charter school(K-12) that had started the program 2 years earlier and already had 2 HC's. I walk in as a sub that just moved into town a year earlier and asked if they needed any asst. coaches. The principal asked me for my coaching resume' and I gave it to her. I am subbing in the gym with 3rd graders and the AD sits down on the side for about 5 minutes and then he says we need to talk and told me where his office was. I go talk to him and he says, "What do you think about being the HFC?" to which I said, " I thought you had a coach already." to which he says, "He doesn't matter." I stayed there for 2 years until it closed in June 2010.
My current job is one that I applied for and interviewed for in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was not picked. (Yes,I was coaching at the above mentioned Charter school in 2008 & 2009) From what I understand now, politics prevented me from getting the job in 2008 & 2009. (The same coach was retained after the interview committee picked someone else)The parents complained and got rid of him and I interviewed again in 2010 (At my wife's urging). I did not get the job again. It was given to an older coach from the Catholic League with Hall of Fame credentials. He got the job in late March. In mid-May I get an E-mail from the coach they hired saying that he needed an asst. coach(By this time, the charter school has already announced it is closing. I was not going to coach that year[2010] because who gets a job this late--right?) Once again, at my wife's urging, I talk to the coach and he hires me to coach WR/DB's. We have weightroom and he can't get any kids out. A week later he quits. It is now the last week of May. The next day I get an e-mail from the Superintendent, "This is not an interview, it is an offer meeting." I have now been there about 18 months(2 seasons). I have a very large chip on my shoulder, especially when I hear "Why didn't we hire you earlier?"
PS: My wife says I am difficult to deal with if I am not coaching. That is why she "urges" so much.
