Yup. Made me cry. Thanks coach. You ARE the man I am striving to be...to your kids and your "kids."
James has already said, "Daddy..I'm going to play football with the big kids!" WHA!

I would like to agree with the agreement above on the disagreement. I also coach O-line and I will tell you that by week 4 the drills run themselves. SO...what use to take us 20 min. now takes us 12. Now what? GOOD! Now we break down those dirty defenses we are facing. We will do it with a 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 drill based on what we are facing. THEN..when we get to TEAM...we get to see the whole thing.
I know the biggest hurdle I face is proving to the kids that what we do in a 2 on 2 drill is EXACTLY what they will see when we are doing team and thus..if they do THEIR JOB...they are doing the right thing...don't worry about the other 10 folks on your side of the ball...worry about YOU!
EVERY DAY: Chutes; eXit strategy (X-block drill); mouse TRAP drill (trap drill).
...guess what our 2 base blocking schemes are....

Thanks guys. Maybe just a little venting. James and I are very very good. No worries about me being gone too much or any of that.
I like the, "Train him up as a water boy" idea.

Hey fella's,
I have been on Huey for a few years now and know I will get some advice (good...bad...sarcastic...all of it!).
Long story short: When I got back from Afghanistan (deployed as a Company Commander with the National Guard), my wife decided she didn't want to be my wife anymore. Oh...Jody. #$%! Jody. Jody was about 3 inches from having his face smashed in and I was about 3 inches from going to prison....ANYWAYS...
My little fella just turned 4 in September. His mom and I split the time: I have MON-TUE, she has WED-THUR, and we split FRI-SAT-SUN.
I think I have held my own with the daycare thing. Most days I would have to leave work a touch early (Still working for the Army..LONG story..but I'm close to home), pick him up from one day-care and bring him to another for practice. Usually friends.
For home games my parents (live 90 min. away) love football, me, and their grandson, so they came up for our home games and watched him. They even took him to a few away games. For away games I had to find a sitter.
He will be in Kindergarten next year, so that might help....I really don't know.
Looking for some advice, tips, tricks, whatever... I am the assistant head varsity coach at a class C school in Michigan (239 enrollment; 9-12)
Thanks guys, John

I agree with Spartan. Teaching 6th grade is the best recruiting tool ever!!! All fall those kids have to listen to me talk football. All year varsity kids come to see me (they are a BIG DEAL when they come to the elementary.)
Then...when they are playing as 7th graders I am able to jog over during a break and talk with them. My favorite is early in the season say, "Hey...raise your hand if you know how to run <<INSERT BASE PLAY HERE>>>" All the hands shoot up. Then I hook 'um, "Yeah...you guys know <<INSERT STUD RUNNING BACK HERE>>?" I hear a bunch of, "YEAH!?"'s.... "Well...that's his favorite play!" BAM! HOOKED!!!
I'm sure they go to class the next day saying, "Yeah...I'm practicly just like <<Varsity player>>.....I mean, heck...we run the same plays...."
HAHA!!
Recruit the youngsters!

1) Admin support 2) Community support 3) Committed, smart, GREAT TEACHER TYPE (Doesn't mean they are literally a school teacher....just GREAT at teaching) coaches. 4) A program....not a Varsity, JV, and Jr. High TEAMS...but a football PROGRAM. Getting younger kids involved with the Varsity guys. Getting the Varsity involved in the Jr. High teams...lots of ways to skin the cat...but the younger kids have to look at the older kids and say, "I want to be like Jimmy!!"

Welcome Coach Dave! I coach a small town varsity program in Upper Michigan. My team is 7-1 right now! I had to take this season off because I'm deployed to Afghanistan.
You will read and learn A LOT from these forums! Good luck!

The best way of getting a real good look for the offense is to cheat. MOST DEFIANTLY!!! I make a separate set of hand signals JUST for the scout team and when I hear the offensive play, I throw the kitchen sink at them. Scout team likes it because they have their own "system" (I ABSOLUTELY base my scout D off our opponent week to week). If the starting O can beat me when I'm cheating....they can probably move the ball against a team that has to follow all the rules. Sometimes ill tell him we are going to run the first 30 plays and he'll load up the defensive line. We do the same thing. Then ill let him know when we start to throw and he'll drop the athletes to the secondary. Exact same thing. Sometimes if we are playing a 5-3 or 4-4 team will also throw an extra safety out there just to make the offense work harder. I always try to play with 12 or 13....until someone catches on that I'm running a Cover 4 out of my 4-4! HA HA! Another thing we try to do as much as we can is reward the scout d players that are really playing hard. Same thing. I have actually had scout team D-line players earn playing time if not starting spots based on how hard they play scout team. Others see this and realize that they could do the same. It makes everyone work harder knowing that any job is up for grabs and we are looking at everyone all the time instead of "Just the Starters."

We are small...20 kids or less most years. For us, it's a matter of, "When can we afford to take <<INSERT STUD HERE>> off the field?" - Special Teams? - Defense? When? - Offence....depending on series...did you just give a tell?
Taking from a basketball strategy, if we can get a few key players a break going into a quarter....we may have taken them out for 2 min. of game play, but they get 10 min. of rest.
My $0.02

We have a clipboard with a checklist. 1st week of practice we take the forms and separate them so all the forms are in piles on the desk. When we have all the forms each pile gets a paperclip, all the stacks get binder clipped together, and they go into a folder that our HC has at every practice, scrimmage, game, etc.
Their physical form and their "pay to participate" form are turned into the office. Our AD lets us know who's missing what every day or 2.
Only dealing with 20 or so players, so it's not too much of hassle.

Any members? I see it's $60 a year...
Wondering what $60 get's 'ya.
I will be deployed to Afghanistan until next spring, would it be worth it to be a member while I'm gone? Wait till I get back?
Thanks, JVD

It's my hope that thousands of years from now, when archeologists dig up my office, they'll be able to find out exactly how we lined up against 12 personnel trips on every 3rd and 5 in the past decade. If archaeologists dig up my office...they will find a lot of snickers wrappers and Diet Mt. Dew bottles....

I started one.
I broke it down by catagory. Examples would be: Hydration: Water Jugs, water bottles, ice, cooler, sports drinks. Medical: Bag, prewrap, tape scissors, icepacks, mouth-guard. Team equipment: Game ball, practice ball, kicking T, kicking block, etc.
Mainly a tool to help our managers help us to remember everything.

I am a dumb Army guy, so I use checklists. From moving a Platoon via foot, HMMWV, helo, etc. to planning a raid or departure ceremony, I have a checklist I can reference to make sure I don't forget anything.
Got me thinking, "Why don't I have a pre-game checklist?"
I know we use a school truck to move all of our equipment and have a school bus move our players. We have not had many issues in forgetting anything, but why leave it to chance. I'm thinking mainly equipment, but I guess it could go into post game, "Call the paper, E-mail the TV station, etc."
Wondering if anyone would be willing to share what they have.
Thanks, John

I don't watch old scout film much at all, but if I have the 2 or 3 years of previous years of our games against them I will go back and look at those. I think if you run an offense (wing-t, spread, option) that the rest of their opponents don't, you sometimes get a better scout look from how they played you the year before. For example, we will play a team week 3 this year who will play 2 spread teams before we play them. We are a SBV team so seeing how they align to 4 and 5 wide sets doesn't hold much value for us. Instead, we will go back and pull our film and see how they played against us last year, and possibly how they played a flexbone team as well. Once we have that, we will go back to this years film to look at personnel. Good tip!! We play one spread team...and that is week 9. I can totally see if we played them week 1 or 2 how looking back would be helpful.

In our area I think it has a lot to do with personnel too. We are all smaller schools, so if someone has a stud FB...they are going to run FB more. Stud QB, throw more, ect.
Interesting topic I have been thinking about for a while

How much stock to you put in year to year film.
For instance: I have 3 years of film breakdown on team X. I take this years film and study it, then put in the repository for the previous years. Run my reports to see any trends. Sometimes I see stuff... sometimes I don't.
Do you put stock in this?
When a new HC comes in...I archive it.
Sometimes I see trends (i.e. a team we play historically will run option until they get into the red zone...then they run more iso)
Wondering how much you look at historical data....
Thanks, JVD

Does he come to practice? A few solutions I can think of that are "less intrusive."
1) Have him in the booth on the headset. If he's that "good" maybe that's the best place for him.
2) Have him sit high in the bleachers and do defensive stats. Compile and report to <<Insert Coach Here>> at 1/2 time.
I wouldn't want him on the sidelines. Have the AD with you when you tell him if that's the choice you make.....

Yeah...I'm going to have to go work a deal with the lady that runs the local emrodery/shirt shop. See what we can get for $25. They join, pay their $25, get their shirt.
Then have a newletter asking for donations right after they get their fat tax return...
I wasn't really looking at it as a money maker....but maybe we have an alumni who wants the fieldhouse with his name on it!

I was reading (In my deer blind...opening day here in MI!) the football coaches bible. (Great book btw.)
I read two chapters in a row about coaches (College) who set up alumni associations. They had a banquette for them...sent out a quarterly newsletter...asked for money...etc.
It sounded like a really cool idea.
Does anyone have a similar set up for their HS program?
