We have a fall sports awards ceremony (Which is not extreamly well done). I would like to have a football specific "banquet."
Here's what I was thinking: Local resturaunt that has a banquet room. Have a slide-show/clips playing of the year. Invite a guest speaker (Coach from a local college....former player...etc.) Have a cheap (nice) meal Give out awards We have 21 on Varsity. Obviously they could bring their parents
Anyone do this? Just wondering about the money part of it.... our county has 20% unemployment...so money is a big issue for a lot of people. I should be able to get some donations....

Thanks for all the ideas. I went to the trash bin they were in (3 days latter) and they were still there. (That's a whole conversation in it self.....)
I took them to the art teacher and tossed a few ideas out there. She was pumped!
She is going to paint 2 panels white. One panel will have our team logo painted on it and I got with the captains and they are going to have the team sign the other panel and give it to our HC at our awards banquette.

Or you could have got a bit of wood, some tinfoil and a ball and make yourself a replica of the Vince Lombardi Trophy for your trophy case ;-) NOW WE ARE TALKING!!!!!! I'm a die-hard Packer Backer... HC is die-hard Lions fan... That doesn't cause any tension.... BTW...he thought the replacement refs should have gotten a long term contract.... GO SEAHAWKS! HA HA!

We just threw out 4 junk footballs. We have had them for a while and they were just taking up space on the shelf.
On my drive home I was wondering if we could have done something with them: - Make some kind of award - Sign and give to the principal - Etc.
So...question is: Do you do anything cool with junk footballs (besides throw them away)?

-1 on the TDS. We got a few new ones last year and they stayed in the bag....our QB and running backs hated them. They used a 3 year old ball. Had better grip.

"DON'T JUMP!!"
That's just like telling a kid, "Don't strike out!"
All they hear is: "Jump"

There is a team just east of us that has "Midnight Madness."
They hold their first practice starting at 12:01 on the first day you can have practice. It gets a lot of hype. Pumps the kids up.
Is that what you meant? Or did you mean specificly at practice.

Thanks for sharing coach.
As a line coach I have always said, "Give me a bunch of smart, slow, undersized kids who want to be there over the big, fast, dumb ones who are there because their daddy wants them to be"

I have plays drawn on 5x8 notecards. I use a binder ring to keep them together (Also helps me keep them year to year...take out plays...put in new ones...ect.) I play scout team QB (real short on numbers most years and our QB's almost always play defense too). I have the scout team huddle all facing the LOS. I stand in front (Facing LOS) and hold up the card. Everyone looks at their job. I may point out anything that HAS to happen, then we execute.

Some more Michigan Programs:
North Dickinson Ishpeming Menominee (Might be over 700...) Calumet Lake Linden West Iron County Kingsford (Over 700 I think) Iron Mountain
A lot of quality programs that get overlooked because they are small U.P. schools. I love U.P. football!

Great HS b-ball coach here in the U.P. Rae Drake. He is now an assistant at Michigan Tech.
He always had about 8 starters. His philosophy (From me watching....not straight from his mouth) was that a "medioker" kid will play up at a higher level when playing with better players. So....start 5 Quickly sub in 1 (4 starters 1 sub) Sub in another (3 starters 2 subs) Starter back in (4:1) New sub in (3:2)
I watched medioker kids playing GOOD basketball in the 4th quarter.
I always remember that because ususaly when you see the scrubs in the game...there are a TON of mistakes.
Just my observation.... JVD

Cool story I had to share.
Last Wed. in the weight room, I saw some competitiveness. Pretty soon everyone started betting, "A COOKIE"
"If you can lift that 15 times I'll go buy you a cookie!" Nobody could do what was asked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~BRAIN WORKING~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday I brought in a pack of Double Stuff Oreo.
We put 135 on the bench bar and here was the deal: Lift it 10 times....get a cookie. 20....2 cookies 25....3 cookies 30....4 cookies
THEN...the top 5 got an extra cookie and their name on the board.
Kids worked harder than I have ever seen!!! Guess it was worth the $2.99!!!
"you're not getting any better looking, so you might as well be strong." I wrote that on the mirror in the weightroom (we only have a small one...mayb 2 feet by 3 feet....) Some of the kids didn't get it at first.... PRICELESS!!!
We go from 4:00 till about 5:50...then give the kids about 30 min. off (Down a sandwich, drink some water, etc. Then we hit it again from about 6:20 - 7:50.
A lot of kids come from a long way (Biggest geographic district in MI), so having them come in twice would be unreasonable.
When you have players (or kids who SHOULD play) tell you that, "Football is too hard!" Pull this up: search.espn.go.com/e60-cody-rye/videos/6A kid from Ironwood Michigan, paralyzed from the waist down at age 5. Played D-Line and Tight-End for the Red Devils...caught a pass too! This kid has more heart in his chest than most. JVD
Had the same at my HS when I was a soph. (He was a senior)
Played D-Line, watched the signals from the line (LB Called the defenseive play) so he knew what to do.
Facebook is a must.
Not only do the players "like" the page. So do parents. Community members. Alumni who live far away. Everyone.
IMHO you are missing the boat if you DON'T have a fb for yoru team!!!!
It does show respect and sportsmenship. We are out there to do more than just win football games.....
DO IT!!! Facebook is by far the most powerful communication tool in the world. I don't see any down side. Absolutely must have for disseminating information. Text is good. Twitter is good. Websites are good. Facebook is a no-brainer. Must have. www.facebook.com/#!/pages/LAnse-Purple-Hornet-Football/227536237636
What level?
*How playing time is earned. *The difference between hurt and injured. *The safety precautions YOU take (stickered helmets; mandatory mouth guards; blocking and tackling technique) *Conflict resolution. (If their player has an issue...have the PLAYER bring it to the coach...like a man. If there is still a problem...etc.) *Your expectations of the players *Ways they can help (boosters, tickets, film, stats, etc.)
Work has to be done to be mentally prepared.
There are 2 teams we play every year that usually put a hurting on us. The kids know it. The trick is to prevent them from being beat before they step on the field.
Example #1: Played a team week 2 who did not have a week 1 game (forfeit). We had some scrimmage film on them. Showed the kids checks, reads, etc. and they mentally were prepared. Get to the field and the Varsity and JV (they didn't have a game on Thurs, so they dressed for Friday) was out there. Instead of looking at the other end of the field and seeing 20 guys...like us....they saw 50. Mentally destroyed before opening kickoff.
Example #2: Play a team that is VERY tough. They run I-Formation Option. ALL WEEK my DE's are doing the right thing....forcing the pitch. Get to the game....mentaly destroyed. They run option at our left DE and he follows the pitch fake.
How do you DO that mental prep....that's my question.
