Stuff like flak jackets, cowboy collars, back plates, visors, etc. Do you allow it? Do you hand this stuff out to certain positions or let them buy their own? Does your trainer decide if its necessary?
I worry that my guys are asking for gear because they think it looks cool. Plus I was a lineman so I never used that stuff, I don't really know who needs what.

I hate them and have become convinced that they don't do a damned thing. Sadly, I'm not in charge.

Our Quarterback gets a rib protector no questions asked. Now as far as the other stuff we ordered all most all of our skill kids shoulder pads with back plates so they're already on there for the most part. I guess I'm not too old school in the fact that I feel if you think you look good then you have more pride in yourself and play better but that's just me.

I have to admit to being a flashy player so somethings i added just for the look, Im from Dallas and played while Deion Sanders was real big and his philosophy on if you look good you feel good and if you feel good you play good was big on me. I played QB so wasnt too much extra i could add on but the jacket was essential. My policy with the boys is if they can give me a legit reason as to why they need the extra stuff then im much more likely to pass it out. Obviously though im not going to be giving my lineman a back plate or my punter a cowboy collar haha.

If it does not take away from their ability to do their job on the field than I do not care what they wear. The first time you drop a pass because you lose in the glare of your visor you better have it off before you make it to the sidelines.
I think there is functionality to a lot of the "extra" stuff. I played linebacker and wore a kick plate. One play I got speared from behind while making a tackle. The spear broke the kick plate but the trainer told me if I would have been wearing it I could have been injured pretty bad.

If it detracts from the team concept, I don't allow it. Wristbands on offensive linemen, visors because the kid wants to look coo, etc. Things that are functional, like rip protectors, I hand out to those that need it. I don't allow anything that puts a focus on the individual player. Works for some, just not my thing.

I don't see a problem with any of it.. I mean Kids are going to try an emulate what they see on television on saturday and sunday. Most of the Juniors and Seniors probably go to the local college games that they are probably being recruited by on Saturdays and see it first hand. Come out the next week and try to recreate what they saw. Now of course if it takes away from their ability, or like said before if its pointless for them to have, you don't allow it. But I don't and never really saw the big deal in not allowing a kid to have a little bit of flash….

Only what is a must for protection.

Only what is a must for protection. Not trying to be an A$$, but if you state it like that… All of it would be cleared by you. Technically most of it is for protection.

The DC hates giving out equiptment, but me (who is in charge of all equipment) and the head coach are both on the same page, if we have it, might as well issue it out. If kids want a back plate or a cowboy collar, I will issue them out.
Ofcourse, if it hinders their play, they are not allowed to have it, basically this only pertains to cowboy collars.
Additionally, they must wear the equiptment for an entire week of practice if they want to wear it in a game, to get use to it.
Also in the begining of the season, we will install rib protectors on all the QB's, backplates for all the WR's and all linebackers get spider pads (shock pads).

Cowboy collars, flak jackets, and such I'm ok with as long as it doesn't interfere with their ability to play like others have already mentioned.
I do not like visors at all. Had a kid with a prescription for a visor this year and he hated it with a passion. He was constantly wiping it in the rain. If it was muddy wiping it only made it worse as it would smear like crazy. He also said like airman it was very hot and like someone else mentioned there would be a glare off it at times.
We really seem to have the most trouble with gloves. If it's the slightest bit wet the gloves are not only useless, but they are much worse than bare hands. The only way they are useful in the rain is if there's a dry towel on the player at all times and that's just too much of a hassle for me.

just a point of curiousity, is there any point to cowboy collars? I understand things like rib protectors but is there actually any use to a cowboy collar?

Nothing that the trainer doesn't tell me they NEED to prevent/help an injury besides gloves. Didn't want to fight the gloves issue, but the tape, towels, etc... is well worth it. Only 1 issue this year and it was dealt with firmly and no other issues since.

I push for and pay for gloves and arm pads for linemen. A few years ago my linemen wore cowboy collars and put their uniforms over them not around them. We were a big line to begin with and it was way over the top. Everyone all year commentated on how huge they were. The psychological effect was worthwhile. One of them cut out comments on facebook about how huge and scary they were and posted it on our board with the message "Live upto it." They did.. =)
As a player I HATED wearing anything but found that if I didn't wear gloves and arm pads I'd be black and blue until after Christmas.

If you make it part of your standard gear than I don't see anything wrong with it... I know most D1 programs make their OL wear knee braces whether they need them or not. If you feel that they help you in some way, then make it a requirement for players at that position and then everyone is in uniform.
I hate the kids that want to stand out and be the only one with the red towel or the only one with a visor... If the ENTIRE TEAM wants visors then we will get them. Haven't had to deal with that one yet either.

I do like the neck roll coallrs, but he screw in ones that stick straight up are safer. They protect the neck from being pushed back, but rolls actually create a fulcrum that could hurt a palyer even worse.

I hate visors, we fight it every year. Why do people think a clear visor looks cool? IT's CLEAR!!! Other stuff that protects you under the jersey I don't care about. We don't have kids that wear neck rolls or anything like that here. Rib protectors and flack jackets I support. anything that prevents an injury I am for. Gloves, i prefer players wear gloves as long as they are team colored. A few years ago we had a kid wear gloves like the seahawks wear (lime green) (our school colors are purple and black) Plus he played DB, and got burnt a lot. Not really a good idea (throw at the kid in the green gloves)
