Any info on the Wisconsin Clinic? I'm a Yooper (Western...3 miles from WI) so basically everything in Wisconsin is closer than anything in downstate Michigan. JVD Do you teach at East UP High, or West UP High? I was in L'Anse (North Western) since 2007. Through a strange chain of events that started with me deploying to Afghanistan, my (now ex) wife finding someone new while I was there, working a state side Army job for 2.5 years, and a by chance conversation with a long lost friend.... I am now in Kingsford. I graduated from here and now I get to teach and coach here...pretty amazing really. Western edge of the U.P. About 1:45 North of Green Bay

Minneapolis Glazier & NDSU for sure. NDSU does a great job. They treat high school coaches very well & the beer, brats, & pork sandwiches never seem to run out at the coaches' social. Decent price as well. Considering the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association clinic. I've heard they have top notch local speakers & it falls on a weekend (March 23-25) that I don't anticipate any conflicts. Any info on the Wisconsin Clinic? Last year I went to the Glazier Clinic in Grand Rapids, MI I have since switched schools...went from Assistant Varsity Coach to Volunteer Freshman Coach....(but not for long...I hope) Might go to Grand Rapids again. If not there, then Minneapolis or Chicago....maybe Detroit, but I doubt it. I'd really like to make 2...but I don't see that happening!! www.glazierclinics.com/coaching_clinics/cities_and_datesJVD

Great idea, either keep the tags OR if the seniors would like they could take their name tags. We had those made for us when I played ball and we got to take them home and I still have it to this day. I was thinking about that.... For the Seniors, we could make another tag with their number and positions on it that they could take home. Sub varsity it would be hard with numbers and positions because they could change...

I am a guy who likes to find efficient ways of doing things. Now that the season is over, my brain has time to work on stuff that may be trivial....like locker name tags.
Right now, we have the classic athletic tape on some of the lockers with names, numbers, nick-names, pictures, whatever the kid draws/writes. I hate it with a passion...it just looks $h!tty.
This is my idea: All lockers have Velcro above them. When a freshman comes in, we make a "nice" name tag. First and last name in color with our mascot and graduating year. It gets laminated and Velcroed to their freshman locker.
When they are a JV, their name tag changes locker rooms and now they have a nice name tag.
When they move to Varsity, their name tag follows them into that locker room and stays 2 years.
When seniors graduate, coaches take the senior tags and puts them on a plaque. "Senior class of XXXX" and it can hang in the locker room for ever.
What do you guys do/think?

heck ya man you could lick up all the syrup you wanted and you'd be covered, plausible deniability whole thing boils down to professionalism for me...I hate to sound like an old guy that just complains, i'm not even that old, but I really don't remember seeing that many coaches getting all "lit" in the locker room with the players after a big win when I was playing. I once was coaching a middle school game and lost on the last play. As the clock ticked zero we lined up so shake hands the coach from the other team was in a full blown dog pile with the kids in the middle of the end zone....we just kinda stood around and waited for dude to get done gesticulating....I'm all for passion but dang man....it did lead to one of my favorite post game exchanges once things calmed down dude: "hey bro great game" me: "thanks you too, good luck rest of the way" dude"hey broseph how do we match up to (other good team in the district that we played the week before and they had next week) me: "they are way better than you" dude: ".........."..at any rate...we're supposed to be the grown men in the situation, I think acceptable celebrations include: fist pumps double fist pumps triple claps squat claps walking down the sideline in the bottom of a fist pump bear hug a guy who is a great kid that did something awesome unacceptable: the bottom of a dog pile the jumping hip bump thing (this is becoming more and more common, maybe some of you can pull it off, but most look silly) running back and forth in front of the stands to "pump the crowd" dramatic faint just my list...yours may vary What about a "jump in the air fist pump then dropping the "X" gesture upon landing? Can't say I have done that, just wondering. DO YOU SMELL WHAT GROUNDCHUCK IS COOKING!

I would contact one of your local high or middle schools head football coaches. Go to all of them. You will see so many different things of how a program is run. Some are completely organized; every minute accounted for and carefully planed and executed. Others are not. ///BREAK/// READ!!! This site has so much info on it..... I was on this site for about a month before I made my first post. ///BREAK/// Thank you for serving. My dad retired as a CMC...rode trident subs.....silly me joined the Army. Can you get the varsity on board too? Then you leverage not only the varsity staff, but also the upper classmen. "ALL GUARDS WITH COACH SMITH!" Now that freshman guard will be learning from the same coach as the varsity...but the varsity players will also help teach him by their actions and he will also have a guy in school he can stop and ask a question of.
Obviously hitting drills have to be scripted for frosh on frosh, etc., but they will learn a lot from the older guys.
Hope this helps.

On your hudl roster you can monitor how much film a player has watched in the last week and last 24 hours, and when when they last logged in. You can tell give them a time requirement and an accountability reminder if they don't meet the expectation. I have found this to be unreliable..#1 there have been problems at HUDL which have been acknowledged. It was just plain wrong ALOT of the time..#2 I have kids whose parents will watch the tape..#3 kids will put the tape on but not watch it. (which I do when I have school crap to watch) #4 kids tell me they watch it w/ another player... Here's what I have done. #1 I will put something specific in there like telling them to text me an answer to a question #2 I will make a google forms quiz on the cutup #3 sometimes on the last slide I will say I will give $5 to the 7th player that texts me. I used to say the first player but the players would see it late and not text me because they figured they lost #4 I wish we could track to see if COACHES were watching the film +1 on #4...

I'm offended. (That's what we do now right? ....get offended?)
I'm new to this, "Being offended" thing...not sure I'm doing it right.
BUT...this thread has convinced me to buy a visor, wear it backwards and upside down (Maybe a little off center??). I will also go get an IHOP menu (I love IHOP!) and strap it to my belt along with a tri-fold wrist coach on my arm.
Last but not least....I guess I have to grow a beard. No man-bun....sorry fella's...I just can't do it.

I'm a big believer in putting it on paper. We are starting a evaluation this year (PM me and I'll send it to you). They will all go in a binder and handed to the JV coach (I coach freshman). That way he knows what he has coming. By putting it on paper there is no forgetting and it's much easier to talk about a score on a paper than not. It also holds the kid accountable if they want to do x, y, and z....they have to own up to doing the work in the off season.

I picked up the scout look by playing QB. I was damn near groomed to be a scout QB. I rally the scout troops. Draw my own cards. etc. I made a kid captain because of his scout team work. Ownership. I run the scout team too. I treat it like the super-bowl. I go BALLISTIC when my defense breaks down and the scout team makes a big play. The scout team likes that....until the next 5 plays in a row when they get burried..... (Perfect) At practice after our last game I gave the scout team HUGE props.... I told them that THEY ran the opponents offence better than they did.

i broke down and binge watched 6 episodes without fail EACH episode was just putting the EPIC FAIL cliffhanger out there Trains have airbags?!?!?! ///BREAK/// I have watched a few episodes and it is WAY more about the drama than the sport. The crappy part is some parents will watch it and think, "that's the way it is." One episode I watched made me cringe.... If I swore at my varsity players like that coach swore at those young kids...I'd be fired!! So many things to say...few of them positive....*****silence******

I think it will be great for new coaches, but the other reason is it takes thinking out of the equation for simple stuff. "Hey Coach, what time do you want your bus to leave?" "Hey Coach, are you stopping to eat after the game? "Hey Coach, what does your team want to do at halftime?"
A million little decisions that have to be made every week.... Make the decisions during the winter...write them down...BAM!
I'm pretty surprised no body does this...

Being an Army guy, every time I walked into a new unit I was handed an SOP (Standing Operating Procedures). Basically it's all the stuff you do all the time, just written down so the new guy has a clue. It has checklists, battle drills, phone numbers, etc.
So... Does anyone have an SOP for their football program? If so, can I see it? <NOTE: The playbook could be part of the SOP...but that's not what I'm worried about.
We had a new coach come in for our 7th grade this year and simple stuff that we all take for granted, he had to learn all by himself if one of us forgot to tell him.
Simple things like: 1) Travel time to <Name that town> is approximately 2:15 by bus. 2) When in <Name that town> the McDoanald's phone number is (123)867-5309. Call approximately 20 min. prior to arriving for quicker service 3) If a player gets injured in <name that town again> here is the hospital phone number and location.
I have a lot more ideas....it could be as detailed or as general as you want.
Anyone do this? Waste of time? Great idea?

I have heard of one other school doing this and I am curious if anyone else does or variations of it.
At a small U.P. school about 10 years ago, the JV and Varsity did warm-ups and individual time together, then they split up and did team separate.
The philosophy was now there were 4 coaches (2 on Varsity, 2 on JV) teaching individual techniques. So...If I'm the offensive line coach: I coach the same kids for 4 years in a row. When they first learn how to block as a freshmen, they will be asked to block exactly the same way when they are senior.
Same with other positions.
The other thing it did was allow for a DL coach, LB coach, DB coach, etc.
Anyone do this? I really like this idea, mainly because as the varsity OL coach, I would sure like to get my hands on those freshmen and get them to block the way I want them to block when they are seniors! Our JV coaches do a GREAT job....but this way might be better.
...and....GO!

In the weight room... I always grab some of the (soon to be) Seniors and have them gather the younger guys for group work/speed ladder. Now those directions are coming from the "team leaders" and not the coach (Coach=leader).
Practice... I "Let" the Senior linemen pick the OL drills (after my daily routine)for the day. 95% of the time they pick the ones we need to work for that week. If they don't, I guide them to the right answer without making them look "wrong."
Game... I ONLY tell one of the LB's the defensive play so that everyone on the field gets it from "that guy" the leader.
I also hold "Captains Meetings," usually on Tuesday mornings before class during the season. Those work well because in that small group the Captains will work out a lot of issues they see, take advice, and relay other information that has to be put out. After the 2nd week of trying this, the Captains asked for if they could keep everyone after practice for a few min. after we ended to talk with the team. HC and I walk away and now the LEADERS are LEADING.
Not saying it's perfect....but it's a technique.
