Has anyone set up an alumni association at their high school? Anyone willing to share what they are doing?
Thanks- JVD

I want a 5-7 second clip of the scoreboard after each score and at the end of each quarter. It's marked in HUDL as "S" in the ODK column.
Helps me remember when people scored (time/quarter) and quarter scores.
///BREAK///
I also want a clip showing the teams shake hands. Just in case something happens, we have it on film.

Last week we had a freshman come with us (JV) to film. I asked if he had ever filmed a football game before, he said he had. I gave him the 90 overview of, start recording as they break the huddle, make sure you can see the sticks, zoom in as the line goes down, follow the ball, etc.
Go to upload the film and I have 17 clips.....and one clip of the entire 1st half, halftime, and the 3rd quarter.
With that lesson learned.....does anyone have an instruction sheet/checklist they go over with a kid who is going to film?
Thanks in advance JVD

It is truly sad that they are gone. I lost several friends while serving overseas. Terrible violence and deadly trauma is an awful way to die. I think of my friends often, and today especially so. I recall the sentiment of General Patton. Yes, let's grieve...but also, let's thank God that these men existed. I lost 7 while in Baghdad in 2006-2007. I wear them on my wrist and think of them often....not just on Memorial day. I grieve every day...but I also thank God that my men lived. Well said! Check with Kollge Town sports. They partner with schools and give teams a break on UA gear and uniforms.

Shoot...we pooch kick all the time! (Maybe our Kickoff team could be better....HA!)
1st half is fair game. A pooch isn't an on-side...even if it was....who cares?
I have seen a varsity team go in 35-0 at the half...and win 42-35. The other team came out of the locker room on fire while our guys thought they had it won. Football is football and kids are kids. You just never know what can happen.
The 3rd quarter is an interesting animal. IF you are still dominating the other side, I do like to sub early. Put 1 or 2 subs in with the starters so they get some good-on-good experience.

I think it reads a bit condescending and may be burning a few bridges before hand. Why the need for the snarkiness about pop warner or the example of the player missing 3 practices? Just state your rules and consequences without being insulting. In addition to some of the things you mentioned I would also address not discussing playing time with parents or injuries to other players. Establishing an injury protocol and what going to the doctor means for players being allowed to play. Communication norms, summer and fall schedules, school grade policies, and any assistance you may need (snack bar, chain gangs, etc) We wouldn't be "snarky" about pop-warner in the letter/meeting. (It is our #1 issue when they get to HS though....we have zero control over it, what they are taught, etc....we are working on that.) I wouldn't give the examples to the parents...just to the guys on this board. We do talk about injuries and playing time. We also talk about schedules and grades. Looking for more examples/ideas for making our communication better.

Trying to document things we want to address next year in our parent letter. Coaching Freshman, we have to teach them how to football, how to team-mate, and how to not be a pop-warner player.... Things we want to address early that we didn't this year.
1) Appointments. Don't do them during practice. We play on Thursday, so Friday is a great day for appointments. Or, plan ahead and don't do them during the 9 week season.
2) Practice. Your athlete MUST make practice. This isn't pop-Warner where everyone plays every game, gets a ribbon and a pat on the back.
3) Be a man. If your athlete is going to miss practice. They must "Man-up" and tell the coach (Beforehand if possible). This year we had a player miss 3 days and then showed up like nothing was wrong....
What do you address with parents that they may not know about HS football?

"You will run sweep exactly like this. If you don't do it exactly like this, I will find someone who will." Is that "Slave Master Mentality?"
There is no option. This team is not a democracy. You will do it the way I say, or you will stand next to me on the sideline.
Ugg....just uggg.
These are the same people that will protest me when I get back from my next war...... That's okay. I'll take SECDEF's advice, shake their hand then wink at their girlfriend...because she knows she's dating a !@$$&.

Why are they protesting again? I have heard ALL of the news commentators give their opinion of why they are protesting...but I haven't heard from any of the players. That's a problem.
If you want to sit out the anthem....kneel it out...whatever. I don't really care. But don't be angry when people are angry with you. Make sure your "cause" is worth the consequences.

Big fan of Sun Tzu: I like the part (Don't know the exact quote): If you know your enemy but not yourself, you will win 50% of your battles. If you know yourself but not your enemy you will win 50% of your battles. If you know yourself and your enemy you will never be defeated.

Has anyone build a drill manual? I know that I really only use a hand full of drills, so I decided to put them on paper. I figured if nothing else, it will give me and the HC talking points for improving drills/practice.
I think I want to share it with the players too via Google Classroom. I coach Freshman and a lot of them are brand new to football. I thought this would give them another way to learn the drills and another way to see how the drills fit into a game.
Kicking it around....looking for another opinion.
Thanks- John

I don't monitor the kids. I refuse to be friends with them until after they graduate. I only monitor what gets put on our football page.

At my last school there was a big discussion about what should be done. One day I said (to myself...they didn't really listen to me much...even though I'm pretty smart...(Self proclaimed)) $#@! it. I'm doing it. Made a Facebook page. I was the only Admin for a LONG time. Zero problems. www.facebook.com/LAnse-Purple-Hornet-Football-227536237636/?fref=tsAt my current school, the Football program had a page, but it wasn't very active. I became an admin and started posting a lot more (More than just football. Basketball, wrestling, etc.) and it has picked up a lot of activity. Zero problems. www.facebook.com/flivverfootball/?fref=tsFor the "audience" it's more of a passive system. I monitor comments very closely....haven't had to delete any yet. Get some interesting questions through messages though! HAHAHA!

Right after the Kapernick deal we were at home and lining up for the Anthem. As I'm walking down my line of players to get to the back I stop by our QB and say, "So what are we doing? Taking a knee during this or what?" (Complete sarcasm) QB Kind of looks down and says, "Coach....my dad said he would literally come down on the field and murder me in front of all these people if I did that." I replied with a smile and, "I like your dad." Continued to the back of the line.

It has really been great! It was way more involved that I thought it would be, but in a good way. The best part was the networking with other coaches in all sports to include the professors at Ohio. Give me a call if you want 906-869-0607

Thanks for the feedback! I always coach to get lateral on the first step of a pull. I have found if I don't then we get bucket steps and we are slow. If we can get our feet headed the right way and eyes on our target, we will be just fine. This goes for the Buck-sweep pull as well. Get lateral and see your target. I use to coach elbow whip, but I would get all kinds of crazy footwork. If I can get their 3rd step on the ground headed the right way, we should be okay. Plus, if that DT penetrates at all...he is right where we want him to be. About 300 ways to skin that cat.
As for the head on down-block. We almost always have a double team, so I should have a hat on each side of that center with eyes on the LB. Technically, we could teach both, but to keep it simple, we always have our head in the hole. If we can get a shoulder on him...if he wants to run away from the block...great. We will take him there. If we try to get our head on the inside to stop penetration and we miss, or he comes to our gap on some kind of stunt, now he is standing at the LOS with no one in between him and our ball carrier. Only about 238 ways to skin that cat! HAHA!
Bottom line is I try to keep everything as simple as possible with very few words. I want my kids to play as fast as they possibly can. "Clear minds make fast feet."
Again, thanks for the feedback! JVD

I'm getting closer.... ...to having my masters in sports coaching from Ohio University. Between moving week 2 of this football season, selling my house, learning a new job, etc., I was finally able to do my capstone coaching video project.
I moved from an assistant varsity position to a volunteer assistant on the freshman squad at my new school (Hometown...had to take the opportunity to get back).
It's super generic. Fullback trap with a bunch of my freshman players. If you have 16 min. I would appreciate any feedback!
