I spend a lot of time breaking down opponent's film and have looked at it from many angles and feel like we do a pretty good job of coming up with a gameplan. However, I wanted to hear from you guys as to what you feel are the most important things to look for when scouting.
Side question: Which is more important and effective, scouting individual players (studs and puds) or schemes/tendancies?

I have just started doing that this year. I put all the plays in a spreadsheet so I can sort them by differen things: Down, Distance, Hash, Formation, ect.
I had 2 films on one team, and I made one "super spreadsheet".
That showed me a lot more. I saw that 3rd and short they never threw a pass. 2nd and long they almost always did. I learned that they only threw screen out of one formaiton, so if they were in a different formation, our guys knew they could get after the QB if he droped back.
It's far from perfect, but it made me feel more confident in my playcalling (defense).
I scout film for scheme....the local paper for studs.

That's offense, defense and special teams.

scheme 1st - you have to line up correctly
match ups come later, but still important

We like to identify any formations that will give our base defense problems so we can make sure our kids can make our adjustments. After that we look for:
Top 5 Formations Top 3 Runs Top 3 Passes Players that we can beat on the line to get pressure
That's our big thing week in and week out

scouting tendencies will lead you to decent player reports right away. You will see who they go to and what they play like.
So they're both important. But making tendencies and schemes the priority will lay the foundation you need.
our D is HUGE on tendencies. On monday our first 15-20 min period after stretching is we run our D against the opponents top 1 or 2 plays repetitively. Each side. Lots of reps. It is understood that stopping these 2 plays is our top priority that week. We even have a chart and look at stuff during the game. People have their own tendencies whether they know it or not. A lot of times they dont realize it and run what's comfortable. Most people dont look at their own tendencies it seems. at least round here.
