Our average number of players is around 18, so we have a lot that go on O and D. We also have quite a few that have to learn more than one position (2 years ago one of our hard running HB's also had to play guard).
We do indy O, then Team O (Scout D) Then we will switch and do Team D (Scout O)
The next day we will do indy D, then team D (Scout O) Then we will switch and do Team O (Scout D)
I think the key to having a successful small school program is to do less better. Simple but hard nose football.

We have 2 coaches for varsity (A few volenteers, but with work, they can't always make it...so count on 2)
I take the OL and the HC takes backs (Sometimes ends go with him for pass skelly, sometimes they come with me to block)
On D I take the D-line and LB's, HC takes the DB's.
He runs/calls the O I run/call the D
We rarely have over 18-20 players....so it works out okay. I would like some more 1 on 1 time with the DL and the LB's by themselves....and I do on the side sometimes, but overall it works alright.

The best guards I ever saw were fullbacks the year before....
The player has to put the needs of the team before himself

Hey Coach,
There are a million ways to do it.
Here's what we do:
MON: Film and Team O vs. that weeks D. TUE: Team D vs. that weeks O. WED: about 50% of both O and D THUR: Special teams 1/3 O 1/3 D 1/3 Then spegetti! (For some it's the best part of the week!)
Above is not ALL we do...but it's the big rocks. Hope this helps.

I love facebook! No students allowed to be a friend till they graduate. I have over 500 fans of our small schools fan page. I said I would allow comments until it was a problem. Over a year and no problem. I might have deleted 2 or 3 posts that former players droped F-bombs in. Very easy way to tell everyone what's going on. www.facebook.com/#!/pages/LAnse-Purple-Hornet-Football/227536237636

The caring part is it.
Talk with those kids where they work (I BS'd with our stud LB all summer at the grocery store...made the fall a lot easier)
Give them a fist pound after a basketball game.
Catch one of their baseball games in the summer.
Let them know you are more than just a football coach.... All of our guys are more than just football players.

We split into two teams and have a scrimmage using college OT rules. The kids have fun with it. Coaches are refs.
For conditioning that day we give everyone the chance to kick a PAT (off a kicking T...just goes faster) We run a 40 for every one missed. Kids LOVE that one!

TRUE STORY about Marquette!! The past two years it was a big deal for them to score a TD! They beat every team in the GNC besides Kingsford (GO FLIVVERS!!) Guess where I graduated from! They beat Menominee (Killer single-wing team) for the first time since the mid- 90's. INCREDIBLE turnaround!

As long as they stay away from practice....I say go for it. It's the parents last football game too.
To answer your questions, our parents are honored at 1/2 time with their players. Our student council and cheer leaders do the posters and such. (I like the breakfast idea)

Slight twist on the subject: Do your kids care? I know it was a HUGE deal when I was in school. I'm not sure what our requirement was, but I got a letter as a Jr.
The reason I ask is that a friend of mine coaches at a small school, and their JV's had to fold after 5 games because of low numbers. My friend had 5 JV's move up to Varisty (all were invited). He talked with the head coach and they are going to letter those 5 sophmores/freshmen.
He made a big deal out of the lettering, and they didn't seem to "get it" or care. Very few wear letter-jackets (can't afford...it isn't "cool")
Just wanted to throw that out there.....see what you think....

Thanks for the info. We have tall ceilings...I will have to look into suspending things. How are you using PVC pipe for pads and jerseys? Are the jerseys on hangers?
Keep the ideas comming!
Thanks, JVD

We have a small storage room for all of our pads, helmets, jersey's etc.
What are some innovative ways you store your equipment to save room/make use of the room you have?
Ours is an organized chaos.....
Thanks.... JVD

We got out of school on May 28...took one week off...then started lifting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. First day we had 12....been averageing about 10 Kids (freshmen thru Senior). (Looking at probebly 18 on Varsity).
We are still competing with baseball and work.
The kids who are dedicated are REALLY dedicated. The others....hard to get them to show up.

I had a mentoring program for Middle School Football. I started it in January. 7th graders (Going to be 8th graders) were responsible for being a mentor to 6th graders (Never played football before).
I made a chart that I kept in my classroom with the name of the mentor and the mentee. I had 15 or 18 topics on the chart that my mentors where required to talk with the mentee's about. Things like: What do we do durring warmups; hydration importance; position names (Offence); position names (Defense); reasons for penelties; etc. When a mentor talked with a mentee about a topic, they would come in my room in between classes and write the date in the box coorisponding with the topic.
It worked very well, and made my mentors smarter on the game. They had to look up some things.
It also worked because I had the 6th graders all day, and could ask them about their mentors.
I stoped doing it because I got "promoted" to our Junior Varsity team. The coach that took over for me said that it helped a TON because the new players had a clue when he said, "We need a guard over here!" Also, when that 7th graders showed up, he arleady had an expericned player that he had been talking with for a few months, so he had someone he could ask questions of without asking the whole team or the coach.
The JV coach is VERY old school...so the idea didn't work with him...also...I didn't have enough time to get it organized. I'm now on the Varsity staff....and again, it's a time thing this year. I think next year I may be able to work it out so that gonna-be Seniors will talk with gonna-be Juniors.

What do you guys talk about?
Do you have specific coaches tell you about specific things?
Trying to be more efficient with our talk.

Does anyone keep stats durring the game that you use to make adjustments?
Example: A statastition calls on the headset, "Hey coach. Every time you ran <<<Insert play here>>> you got 4-6 yards, and you have only ran it 3 times." ~or~ "Coach, every time you run <<Insert play>> you lose 1 yard."
Thoughts?

Pre-season testing: Top 10 bench press (how many times can you rep 150) and top ten 40 yard dashes.
We had a similar situation, except for us it was a weight-room. I have some "kids" graduated HS already in the National Guard who went to my HS. They see my last name and strike up a conversation if "That's me" on the top ten list in the weight room (Graduate in 2000).
I always thought that was pretty cool.
