Happened to me today....
When your wife leaves you a note and ends it with XOXOXO and you wonder if you should switch from a 4-4 to a 3-5-3 next yr.

I remember the first time I realized I was obsessed with this game of ours... It was pooring rain, and as I got into my car, I stared at the water streaming down the windshield, and the first thought I had was "Wow, that looks like 4 routes out of a spread-2x2 set)
... Then there was the dream about how to block our draw-play, which was put into the gameplan later that day!

When your wife wants to meet "that huey guy and give him a piece of my mind".
That comment came after we were late to her parent's house because I was on here...

You drove 600 miles this weekend to watch 2 playoff games just because you and your son wanted to see Maty Mauk play again.

Preface- We call our offense by numbers.
Whenever I wake up at night and see the clock says 3:13 and I think; 313-Speed Trap Left

I did this last night: My wife was headed downtown to meet with one of her friends who lives out of town (My son and I had boys night home...and watched college football...).
I knew my HC would be there so I diagramed out a new defense on a napkin to hand to him when she got there!

You show your 6th grade class: "Trick Shot Quarterbacks" on youtube when you have an extra 7 min.
(If you haven't seen it.... do it...it's awesome!)

You take your family picture for your Christmas card at the stadium before pregame warmups because its the only time you have to do it.

I live in a dorm...I have a big white board, two tiny ones, erasable markers everywhere, a diagram of whatever play/offense I'm interested in that day is drawn up on the big board hanging on the wall, as well as three or four notebooks dedicated to just football/play diagram doodling.
I was lying in bed one night trying to fall asleep, I was daydreaming/dreaming about how to approach an essay exam coming up. I was thinking about if I should just procrastinate and write it (don't think about it, and plow through it), or should I organize it and make it precise. I was deciding if I should put the compare or contrast portion first, then how to approach the causes, which then lead to the decision to plow through the essay and call a straight up FB trap, then I would get back to our zone game, then when I have the essay all well and organized, I hit it with counter trey. Then my eyes widened and I said to myself "WTF?"

If you fall asleep at night to the thought of "off-set fullback or regular I-back fullback" and why?
"off-set sets up counter, belly counter-trap, toss sweep and boot pass better".......but "regular fullback seems better for ISO, ISO pass and tends to base the defense up a little better"......but if you off-set the fullback he can release into the flat....weak or strong".......and I am asleep.

you might be a football coach if you tell your wife that even though you want a family no way can there be a pregnancy when the delivery date could occur between the last two weeks of july through the month of november...team comes first
you might be a football coach if you go out to eat with your wife and you come home with your game plan for the next week on your napkin from supper
you might be a football coach if you and your wife are driving to your vacation and she is driving so you can draw plays, forty five minutes into the trip you tell her that you have come up with the greatest formation slash/offense that you have ever seen...she asks you to show her this great breakthrough and tells you if you can figure away to hid that 12th man in the formation you really will sell alot of dvds..true story

When watching movies on the couch with my girlfriend, I always keep a game-DVD ready to pop into the player for when she falls asleep. Many a nights she's fallen asleep in my arms, while I'm squinting my eyes and focused 100% on trying to figure out ... whether that DL is head-up or in a 2i technique.
... What do 'normal' people do that don't coach football??

If you tell your wife two hours after the birth of your first son, "Okay, great job hunny, I got to get to the JV game." .....and you're not even a JV coach.

You go to a college game and before the game while tailgaters are throwing frisbees and drinking beer all around you you're watching game video on your laptop.

When you're at a college game, and while tailgating and throwing the football with friends, you're running schemes and plays:
Running veer action pass, running boot of wing-T buck series, using exact drop-back steps and techniques, etc.

Was at a family gathering once and my cousin asked what the hell I was doing. I didn't realize that I was moving back and forth across the room with my hands in position as if I was running the triple option, and I was simulating the pitch phase over and over.

I have two big white boards (one currently has protection schemes drawn up on it, the other has a fire zone), three notebooks, two binders full of football articles and position manuals, more playbooks scattered around my room than textbooks, articles I printed out carefully laid on my desk, a dozen football books I keep with me in a huge tub.... Let's just say I'm happy I'm not the only guy who does this!

I was going through the actions of throwing a fade route to the sideline on air once when I was in class... the professor called me a "spaz" hahaha! And my roommates routinely tell me I'm "not Tom Brady" because I work on my dropback and throwing mechanics in our living room.

My brother and I have a full set of audibles, running plays, options and passing concepts with specific dropbacks (R4 no less) for family games. The Brawl for the Ball is taken very seriously in the Clement household.

I told my now wife there is only one month we can get married in and that is June so we did that this summer.
When talking about kids I told her we can't have a kid in the fall because what if he (hoping!) is born on Friday night? Her response was well you will miss the game then. My response was I'm the OC my kids depend on me and need me there! Obvioulsy she didn't find the humor in the fact that I think my kids need me at a game more than my wife does giving birth! I did explain to her that her mother could take over for me for a few hours... We didn't practice making babies for a while after that one!!!!

Another warning: DO NOT date someone who works on a presidential political campaign... As coaches, we generally get to pull the "we work longer and crazier hours than anyone" card. Well, I found out you can't make this self-agrandizing claim if your girlfriend is in politics, because those campaign people work 18 hour days, 6 months straight, and travel about 4 days every week... You will receive NO Sympathy if you start complaining about a "long day" or "long week."

Now those teachers who go home at 3:15 every day and can actually live like normal individuals... I make sure I sign all my notes and emails with my name, along with the specific-time: "Coach ___, 1:45 am" , etc.

You mean there are places where coaches are not expected to go work on football when their planning time starts? I am not even a HC and it is well known that if you need me after 100 you better call the fieldhouse.
