Wow, I cant imagine having to go that far on first down. I wonder if any teams are run heavy or if everyone throws it around to try and get those yards.

hlb, I really feel for the position you are in now. My high school alma mater is the same way, we use to be a powerhouse in the state but now they are lucky to have a couple wins in a year. It also doesnt help that they have the toughest district in our classification. But I second trying to find them some weak competition the first week and if possible the second week. The 7 on 7 thing would be a great idea. I think that some kids probably want to care and win, but they follow all of the other ones that dont give a damn. I think if you are able to sell them on anything about the team, down the smallest detail, get them going for something small and build it from there. Hope I helped, good luck to you

I would want to take the 10 days in the spring. As coaches have already mentioned before, it gives you a chance to better evaluate palyers in the offseason, and I would really like to know before we get to camp if jimmy can play end or if we need to move him.

He doesn't get into the weight room much, but when he does, every other kid that's in there makes sure he has clips holding on his 2.5 lb plates that he's repping with. This reminds me of another event that occured this past season in our weight room. My brother (the DC) and I walk into the weight room and see a student in there who I found out later was one of those kids that thought he was too good or too strong for the football team. well he has his shirt off on the bench and struggling a bit to press up a 10 and 5 on each side. Now it wouldnt be horrible if this kid was a freshman, but I asked my brother later on and he told me that no, sadly that kid is a junior. Well he is bustin his butt to try and crank out 10 reps on the bench and trying to look like a BA. Well my nephew was with us and he was 9 years old. He walks up to another bench and slides on 2 tens on each side of the bar and without any warm up, starts repping the bar out without any problem. I saw it and just chuckled to myself as he starts making his way over to the leg press machine. My brother saw the weight and by this time we were about to leave, and he had been talking to the kid about joining football again which was in vain. My brother turned to this kid and said "hell son, at least put some real weight, you are gettin beat by my 9 year old son" He chuckled when he said it but you could tell this kids ego had been smashed, lol. I just think of this and laugh everytime I see some kid with light weight trying to show off.

I remember last year, God bless this player, he tried hard but had no clue what was going on. One of those players that kinda just came out to be with his friends but he played a decent scout team for us.
Well we were running varsity Kick Return and were setting up lines of scout kick-offs so we could go through it all faster. Well I was talking to this player about what to do cuz I could see he was lost. I told him that I wanted him to go down there and get the ball. I asked, "can you do that Dylan" he says "yeah coach". I turn my back, 10 seconds later I turn back around and he is walking back with the football he just took off the kicking tee, lol. I asked, "what the hell are you doing?" and he just said you told me to go get the football. I was just lost, and I had to turn and walk away while the players all around couldnt stop laughing.

I guess I will devils advocate a little bit now. I agree with needing a good scout D, but on Friday night, I sure as hell didnt want my position (I was fullbacks and nose guards coach) screwing everythign up because I hadnt coached them well enough during the week. So i think coaches need to coach whatever their main position is for the varsity, and let a couple coaches handle the scout team.

This past season at my old school, about half way through the season we had a "pros and cons" session with just the coaches. The one man con that I had was relating in a more personable manner. I was great with my players but just by looking back at how I handled certain situations, my main problem was that i didnt relate to some of the kids as well as I should have.

Some of my coaches dipped while I was in high school. It didnt make me want to dip in any way, i just thought it was something that coaches did.
Now this past season the school I was at, it was illegal to have tobacco on school grounds. Now we were a big "country" type school, but I broke the no cursing rule on the first day on the job, and so i thought I should play it easy for a while.
At games I thought it would be ok if i did since I was up in the box, but again, I didnt want to take the chance.

I am not going against anybody's way of thinking, because obviously we know our own teams better than anybody else, but after reading the DLS book a few times, I dont think that punishments were part of what they were trying to do. He was trying to push his players to be accountable and to be better men, and in my aspect, punishing them for something doesnt follow along those lines. Again, I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, just my point of view.

No offense, but my favorite "game breaker" is the one who is a consitent blocker who can pancake kids and finish blocks. I was just listening to Jason Smith in an interview (the tackle from Baylor drafter by the Rams), he says, " I play with a chip on my shoulder". Yes! That is my kind of game changer. I think coachorr has it correct here. The real game breakers are in fact the offensive linemen. I can't believe how incredibly intelligent this comment is. Good job coach orr. Wow that was so hilarious, LMAO. Really, laughin that much made my day.

I have and currently do coach with people that were coaches of mine when I was in school. The hardest thing I is to call these coaches by their first name....it just doesn't feel right. I also call most other coaches I work with coach, and introduce them to my family as Coach whatever. Yeah same here. I coached with a couple of coaches that had coached me when i was in high school, and even away from football, I couldn't call them by their names. It just seemed too odd.

Wow, I actually started getting a headache reading that. And he said the offense was the still the same, except that now he had to wear number 50-79....sooooo kinda like an offensive lineman, lol. This guy makes me laugh at how hard he is still pushing his product, oops, I mean this style of offense, no matter what has been done to stop it.

Where I went to HS at, football athletes were not forced, but "strongly encouraged" to participate in other sports. We sometimes did not have to do as much conditioning or lifting in the football class because the head coach knew that the head track coach (which was also one of our assistant football coaches) would make sure that we got our workouts in. I wanted to do sports anyways, so maybe im not the best one to talk to, but the incentive of us being in better shape and not having as much to do in football class was a good motivator.

When I was in HS we would go to the mat room for some of our agility and conditioning days. At the end of practice we would have guys pair up and wrestle. We set up on the ground with our backs to each other. The coach would blow his whistle and we attempted to pin the other person, using whatever means necessary. It was great for creating aggression in all the guys and also competiveness

Just a quick question for everyone since we started talking about it being hard for SS teachers to find a gig, did I go entirely into the wrong teaching field?? I am about to graduate, so not much I can do about it right now, but just wondering if I should already start looking into getting certified in another area as well.

This topic got me thinking about something, to you other coaches out there, what is the likelihood that you or your HC wouldtake a coach that works at the elementary school? In High school, I only had one coach in four years that worked at an elementary. Everybody else was in house. Just wondering what your thoughts are. I am going to graduate in a month and be certified elementary. I am also going to get my secondary social studies certification this summer. Thanks

All this talk about soccer reminded me of a story that my older brother told me. This had taken place at both of ours high schools. Let me first state that im not trying to offend, I just thought it was funny, and once you all read it, you will realize why this could never happen today lol.
Well my brothers head coach, who recently retired from a top 5A program in New Mexico, was watching practice one day when a soccer ball came flying over the chain link fence. The player jogged over, and with a smile on his face, asked if he could have the ball back. The head coach picked up the ball, turned towards the player and took out his pocket knife. He then stabbed the ball, deflating it instantly. He tossed it back towards the soccer player and said "keep that $h!t off my field" lol. When my brother told me that, I just started cracking up laughing.
And to endersgame, at least down here in New Mexico, you either like football or futbol, not both haha.

Yeah I am about to graduate college, and I am hoping I can find a teaching and coaching job. I only have probably one prospective place right now. So it looks like we are having opposite problems right now, lol. You can't get enough coaches and I am just hoping to find somewhere haha.

As bad as it is to admit that, I saw firsthand the circumstances at NMSU. I wasnt a player, but I am a student here and about to graduate. Firts off, New Mexico doesn't nearly have the types of athletes that Texas does, and Mumme never really worked on trying to recruit any of them anyways. Like it said in the video, Tech may get the "second rate" athletes that Texas and Oklahoma turn down, but those athletes are still much better prepared than the majority of ours here in New Mexico.

I have to also say replacing our mike backer. He is the leader of our defense and its always hard finding a kid who is smart enough and aggressive enough to play the position the way we want it played.

This site is amazing. I am only going into my second year coaching (assuming that I can find somewhere around me) and I check this site several times a day. I even check the site on my phone when I get bored. Every time I check on here, i realize how much more there is for me to learn. Thank you to Coach Huey and everyone else for all your help.

Our "best" WR was pretty proud of his 40 time until our 1 tech ran the same time Hahaha, that sounds like my team senior year. Our line was just as fast as the entire backfield, lol.
