As you can see by the post time that it is late. I just have some random thoughts about our profession. 1. The parents seem to be more out of control then ever. Maybe it's is just me. If I hear one more dad say "my son has a good arm, he should play QB" I may lose it. 2. The sense of "entitlement" has grown. Not all, but some kids want that starting position without earning it first. 3. Coaching football is still the best job that anyone can have. I tell my wife that if I did anything else I would be miserable. 4. Getting a kid farther than he ever thought he could go is amazing. 5. Learning a new scheme or concept is professionally fulfilling. 6. Friday nights are a BLAST. 7. We will gripe about the amount of work we put in Saturday through Thursday but we chomp at the bit for Spring football to roll around. (At least I do). 8. People don't understand that 50% of all teams lose. Getting a win is extremely tough especially when the other guy works just as hard. You can't tie. 9. Great athletes make some pretty smart coaches. 10. I should be sleeping right now. 11. I love having my son on the field watching practice. (He is 6) 12. I hate that my wife sits in a chair away from fans during a game. (Her choice not mine...but a wise one). 13. Nothing more beautiful than a well executed counter play. (Maybe that is just me) 14. Working with coaches that work hard but have great senses of humor is a huge bonus. Sometimes you need a good laugh during a long season. 15. I wonder what the next "fad" will be in football? 16. I wonder if anyone has read down this far? 17. I hate soccer. Not the people involved but the sport as a whole. (Had to throw that in) (See #8) ***Side note: The amount of livestock that a country has roaming the streets is proportionate to the popularity of soccer in that country. The US has no livestock roaming the streets. Hence the popularity in our nation. 18. It is sad that all coaches have a "shelf life" at every school. The days of a coach staying somewhere for 25 years seems to be fading away.
19. No matter what, our profession may be screwy but it is worth every second. A football coach can make a profound impact on a young man's life and everyday is chance to train someone's future husband and father.
God Bless all you other coaches!

You might think that about the cows, but late this afternoon a Bull and 3 cows wandered into the horse paddocks. We didn't know where they came from, found out later they came from a neighboring ranch. They said we could keep them if we could catch them. Turns out the Bull was worth about $3,000. We never did catch him. But everybody in the neighborhood was grabbing for ropes when they heard that news. So there, take that, cows walking around AND...I still hate soccer. No, I'm not joking about the story. We were eating supper and these cows come walking by. I'm also NOT in Texas. And coach, 11 pm is NOT late. OJW

Ummm, I'm bracing to be tarred and feathered here, but... am I the only one who enjoys soccer? Just started watching the game this year, went out and bought a soccer game for my 360, hoping to coach in England someday, etc. And this coming from a guy who literally had about thirteen (count 'em!) handballs when we played soccer in gym class. Have you ever tried playing soccer? It's mad hard! I certainly appreciate the skills required to play now.
Don't get me wrong, I still love football more than any other sport, but I do definitely appreciate and enjoy soccer. And anyone who doesn't deserves to run around on a giant pitch for a really long time with few stoppages of play, while trying to deke around 10 other guys with a basketball-sized orb using only your legs and noggin. Go Everton.

All this talk about soccer reminded me of a story that my older brother told me. This had taken place at both of ours high schools. Let me first state that im not trying to offend, I just thought it was funny, and once you all read it, you will realize why this could never happen today lol.
Well my brothers head coach, who recently retired from a top 5A program in New Mexico, was watching practice one day when a soccer ball came flying over the chain link fence. The player jogged over, and with a smile on his face, asked if he could have the ball back. The head coach picked up the ball, turned towards the player and took out his pocket knife. He then stabbed the ball, deflating it instantly. He tossed it back towards the soccer player and said "keep that $h!t off my field" lol. When my brother told me that, I just started cracking up laughing.
And to endersgame, at least down here in New Mexico, you either like football or futbol, not both haha.

This is great - random thoughts and coffee - I love this post
Great job saderfbcoach
For what 's worth 1. The parents seem to be more out of control then ever. Maybe it's is just me. If I hear one more dad say "my son has a good arm, he should play QB" I may lose it. "did you come to the parent's meeting?" 2. The sense of "entitlement" has grown. Not all, but some kids want that starting position without earning it first. I hate this almost as much as soccer 3. Coaching football is still the best job that anyone can have. I tell my wife that if I did anything else I would be miserable. Yes, and I have a day job! 4. Getting a kid farther than he ever thought he could go is amazing. Number two reason I run a football program 5. Learning a new scheme or concept is professionally fulfilling. yes 6. Friday nights are a BLAST. The best! 7. We will gripe about the amount of work we put in Saturday through Thursday but we chomp at the bit for Spring football to roll around. (At least I do). Starts in 17 days 6 hours 10 minutes 8. People don't understand that 50% of all teams lose. Getting a win is extremely tough especially when the other guy works just as hard. You can't tie. Hard lesson 9. Great athletes make some pretty smart coaches. if they work hard 10. I should be sleeping right now. 11. I love having my son on the field watching practice. (He is 6) 12. I hate that my wife sits in a chair away from fans during a game. (Her choice not mine...but a wise one). My wife sits with our marketing guru from my day job. He has adopted our football program and really helps out alot in the fundraising and sponsorship directions. And he keep my wife from yelling at me on 3rd and 6. 13. Nothing more beautiful than a well executed counter play. (Maybe that is just me) Fade from the 6 14. Working with coaches that work hard but have great senses of humor is a huge bonus. Sometimes you need a good laugh during a long season. Great team of guys make it all work 15. Just going off on a tangent with the first point brought up on this thread.
Parents have always been out of control. Just remember, it only takes a couple of clueless adults to spoil the whole bunch. When my nephew got his first head football job (about 6 years ago), his father in law (who was 80 at the time and had been a FB coach) told him that he has to understand that every boy he coaches comes with two big problems. One is called a mom and the other is called a dad. He said that if he could do it all over again he would have coached at an orphanage. LOL

one idea i like and practice...
my wife tried sitting in the stands around the home fans....you know, get involved.....be part of the community.....
after about the 15th mf'er.....she almost got in a fight..........would have been fun to watch a 100 pounder whip an old man......
after that friday night she brings a chair and sits behind the goal posts.............she hasn't been back in the stands in 9 years.......

#15 Next Fad? would like to know what y'all think on this one. Next fad in offense and defense. I'm seeing more and more Singlewing teams. My thinking is that fans/parents think that anyone who runs the Shotgun offense is brilliant and advanced and if you do anything else, you are old and useless. And a couple of teams have made the Singlewing look new and briliant. Florida is a Singlewing team pretending to be Shotgun Spread, and then the NFL just "invented" the Wildcat formation (hint: Singlewing) So....the Singlewing. It looks just enough like the Shotgun to fool the parents, is a powerful offense, tons of playbooks, and would allow you to be "cool." Defense wise, I think zone-blitzing is in the news. The 3-3 stack is old news. I see a number of guys looking into the "G" with the "Bear-46" combination. OK, I guess that will make me a huge target. OJW

I agree with OJW about the singlewing. We were told at the start of the season by the (football knowledge-less) owner that we should have a Wildcat offense.

Had an assistant coach when I was in New Mexico that hated soccer so much he would get the janitor to elt him into their storage area and he he painted the phrase: "PLACE FOOT HERE!" on all the balls and on all of the game/practice shorts. It was kind of funny watching them the next practice.

I agree with OJW, the 'fads' are definitely going in the running shotgun attack and zone blitz directions. I can say this with some certainty because we're actually chasing both fads right now as a program. My seat on the bandwagon is very, very comfortable.
I'll be bummed when our league opponents leave the 3-3 behind, I like what we get to do against that D.

You know, I don't understand why soccer is considered the devil or commuinist anymore so than any other male sport that uses a round ball. Baseball boring, basketball it's ok, lacrosse..well alittle better than basketball. I personally think it's ridicioulus (sp) for kids in the 2nd and 3rd grade to be playing football. I actually think the hand foot coordination of soccer at that age is a better fit and makes for a better athlete. the reason why I said male sport is because the best round ball sport BY FAR is womans beach volleyball..top that!
on another note..I agree w/ #8 I really don't think kids understand exactly how hard it is to win. I never added it up but I bet my record after 29 years of coaching and playing is about .500..... reversion back to the mean I guess for you statistical guru's

I'm guessing we are all having a little fun here...but in all seriousness 1. Football would not exist without soccer and then rugby. 2. What kind of a message do we as adults send when we make jokes like this? If my son came home and told me he'd rather play soccer than football, or any other sport for that matter, my only hope would be that he dedicated himself to it, worked to improve, competed hard etc. The same thing we ask of our football players. I think it was MLK who said if you're going to be a janitor, be the best janitor you can be. It's not the sport, it's how you approach it.

Honestly, as long as my future child doesn't pick up a skateboard, I'm fine. Dancing, music, surfing, whatever, be passionate and dedicated to something. Just not that stupid, stupid board. In all likelihood, he's never gonna stand a chance with all the time that he'll end up at football practices, but if he does go a different route, it'll be his call.

Watched a Soccer game last fall because my son's girl friend was a player and I wanted to see her compete. Don't know if I can do it again- the strain was a bit much.
I like the part about where the wives sit. Mine always locates strategically.
My heroes will always be football coaches. They touched my life and I hope that I have passed it on.

Changed my mind-I love soccer, it's where I go to find my DB's, those guys can run all day long. And where I can find my FG guy. So it's not all bad. And I can see that it's a good thing for little kids. Gets them on their field, running around on the grass, getting coached, and creating teamwork-that gets them ready for football. I don't have any of those "I'm saving myself for soccer" kids. I've never heard anyone ever say that. I'm sure it's common in other places, but in the South, football is king. But I can't watch it, it just makes me nervous to see people out there running around on my football field and not being allowed to hit anybody. Well, you can kick them, which is a pretty close 2nd...maybe. OJW

The only thing wrong with soccer is "Club Soccer". As far as skateboarders go - you might try recruiting one... I've had 2 that I thought would never last - one became an All Conference QB and the other was a 2 time state champion in pole vault (and a pretty good DB!).

mariner, have you seen the latest skateboards? The 9 yr. old kid across the street has one, the friggin thing only had like 2 wheels under the centerline of the board....you gotta be an extreme, athletic, psycho freak to stay on one of those baby's, and the dismount resembles a controlled crash, lol....skateboarders would probably make excellent football players.....they're fearless... use to lots of pain.....have determination....great balance and footwork.....they're all pretty much crazy anyhow....perfect candidates for football players, lol.
