After going through and reading this entire thread, what makes me rage is hearing about some of these coaches and I'm still struggling to move up to the high school level lol, but I digress.
What really makes me rage is coaches wanting to install things on game day, either in the class period or in the warm ups before the game. I am not talking about going over checks and things, I mean installing new plays or blitzes and then getting angry at the kids when they have no clue what is going on. I got the go ahead from my HC this year to say and he backed me up "hey guys we need to have whatever we want installed during practice and not right before the game". I remember saying that a few times this year before I had to give up.
Also, this season had players tell me that they thought we should put in some more plays, so I asked one of them what they were suppose to do on one of our base plays, he kinda chuckled and couldn't respond. I told them guys, that right there is exactly why we don't put anything else in, we are still working on the basics halfway through the season.

I've never been in a district where they have covered or reimbursed cost of the clinic or anything else. That is all on the coaches as far as I know.

The amazing thing to me is how Artesia kept their composure. Watch the video all the way through and see how much class they showed in defeat. I hate to lose, but I hate pouting even more. I actually played high school ball for a school that shares the district with both Artesia, and the team in blue, Goddard. Each game was essentially a rivalry game but we always respected Artesia and they have always been a class act team. Goddard on the other hand, not so much.

I've been at the middle school level for a few years now and I go to a couple Glazier clinics and typically the DFW clinic. It's not expected of us but I do it because I don't want to stay a middle school coach. It's been my goal to be a high school coach, so I want to learn as much as I can and see what connections I can make.

1. About $6,500, MS assistant coach doing 2 or 3 sports and scouting 5-6 games during the fall for one of the schools we feed in to. Our stipend goes up as our teaching pay goes up (if at all). 2. No 3. No 4. No

Well I'm at a middle school so things are a bit different for me.
1. I'm suppose to be in charge of the defense for our 8th graders. I found out in the spring that our HC wanted me to run it. I didn't know a lot about the 4-2-5 but I've done my homework. The thing that concerns me is that I know my HC and he may decide the first week back in school that he wants to be in charge again or put someone else there. It's just the knowledge that it may change when we get back. 2. Staff cohesion - there is a few coaches that don't know what their own position group is suppose to do. Or expect the rest of staff to go out of their way to help them but won't lift a finger to help them unless they are getting something out of it. 3. I think we have a lack of player leadership from last year's kids coming up, but we do have some kids that have a lot of talent. So I guess that is the one area I'm excited for this year and not worried about.

I think i realized i really wanted to coach during my second year of college. I had really missed playing in high school, not so much the games, but just the overall grind of it and attention to details. I was your typical average high school player so i had no chance of playing in college.
Well during my first spring semester, i went back home for spring break and asked the track coach if i could just help out with the throwers for the week. I loved it and at the end of the next season i went to a DFW clinic with my brother and i was hooked. I always wanted to work with youth in some way so luckily teaching fell right in line with that.
Also, im relieved to hear i wasnt the only guy in college drawing up plays during classes. I would go to one of our campus libraries and check out a couple books on football (usually the only reason i ever went into the library).

In NM, as far as powerhouse programs go, the first two that come to mind is Artesia HS, who at one point, about 5 years ago i think, had won 25 of the past 50 years championships in whatever classification they were in. The other school that comes to mind is Goddard HS in roswell. I live here now and they are my cross town rivals. They have probably won half of the titles in the past decade. Both have amazing programs

For those of you guys that use pickle juice on the sidelines, how do you store it on the sidelines? Like do you put it in a special, or labeled, water bottle? We had our first game tonight and had a few starters all cramping up.

I havent been in your situation coach but i think one of the best things you could do for the new QB is to make it simple for him, if you can. Dont put a ton of reads on him and let your running backs and receivers step up and let them see, like you said, its "their time".

I had a coach in high school (my older brother) kick the entire JV off the field during a playoff week. Some of the guys were screwing around and instead of running us off, he told us all, in a very motivating manner lol, to leave. We looked at each other in disbelief and he repeated so we all took off sprinting to the field house.

Well two nights ago I had to go back and complete the level 1 coaching course through nfhs.com, fundamentals in coaching if i remember correctly. Our district wont let you coach unless you have that done.

You see an ad with X and Os drawn on it and it drives you up a wall that the TE is running a route despite being covered on the line by the receiver. If you're in college, you open your notebook to study for a final and it takes you twice as long to read everything between all the plays you've drawnup . Haha, drawing up things is what I did the majority of time in all my college classes lol.

I would only think to have them take a knee if it is really bad, like the kid isnt moving at all or is writhing in pain from a lower body injury. If it is a sprain or something like that, why not coach your own guys up.

When I worked up in the box my first year, I watched the defensive box and checked for any blitzes or stunts they ran and also if they did anything particular versus a certain formation.

This thread reminds me of my first game when I played freshman year. It was our first game of the year and it was against our cross town rival. We were a Power I team and and come out double tight and decide to run our bread and butter play, double lead. We had been working on this play since the first day of freshman practice. Well we were running double lead right, our fullback goes to the left, our power back runs like he is kicking out the end, and our halfback runs straight forward, into the QB and we fumble the ball.
When we watched the film, our coach asks our HB why he didn't follow his path, and he just says "well I saw them go different ways, so I just ran right up the middle." All of us bust out laughing as soon as we heard that.

I don't know what kind of success these US coaches had before they went over to Europe, but I just wanted to add that not every coach in the US is successful or truly knows what they are doing. I know everyone here has known coaches like that (not that I am a genius but I have met some that have no interest in getting better and just want the title of coach). Just my 2 cents

I ran into a similar situation as the player in the OP's post. I was a junior and had only moved up to back-up because the senior above me had missed practice all week. (I was only on the JV all year before this). I had practiced with the varsity in the faint hopes that I may get a chance to get on the field that field Friday night.
Well the guy I was backing up injured his knee and all my teammates knew I was the one to go in. The seniors around started pumping me up and getting me ready and my best friend on the team got me ready too and let me know this was my time. The starter had only been injured for about 10 seconds and I was standing next to our OL coach and told him I was ready to go in. I remember him looking at me, looking away and finding the senior that had missed practice all week.
Obviously I was a bit disappointed and angry at what happened and when that senior got injured I didn't jump to the coaches side like I had before. I still respect that coach and know that in the heat of the game, you make the best decision you can. But luckily I didn't quit and played my next year. So like everyone has said sometimes there is no right answer, just the best decision you can make.

The Oakley Flak Jackets are great! These are the ones that I purchased recently. Before that I had a pair of Oakley Minutes, I only replaced them because I left them overnight at work and I think they grew a pair of legs and jumped in one of my employees pockets lol.
Both sets have an excellent fit and there was never any problem with them falling off my head when I was moving around, working out and such. I had those for 5 years and only had one or 2 scratches on them. When I get a bit more money, I will probably buy another pair just so I have one on standby in case I lose another.

I have to second the Polarized Oakleys. That is all I wear and I have no problem when I am outside in the sun for long periods. I don't think I will ever venture out to test anything else because of how well they work.

When I was in high school, the first day of freshman practice everybody went through receiving drills and were located to position groups the next day based on how well they could catch. If somebody like myself caught very few or no passes, they were moved to offensive line. These were not difficult passes, just typically fades and quick slants and outs. Sorry I don't have any experience with the more in depth tests done, just something we did.

Coach, when I was in high school everyone started out with the molded ones. As we got to be juniors and seniors, we were all given a choice between the two and we all got the detachable ones. I played Oline and also had better grip with the detachables. Just my 2 cents

New Mexico:
in no particular order...
1. Las Cruces High-5A 2. Las Cruces Mayfield-5A 3. Artesia-4A 4. La Cueva-5A 5. Goddard-4A 6. Santa Rosa-2A 7. Aztec-4A
Honestly, these are the only programs that come to mind that are always at the top of the rankings or near it every year.
