Have 10 Days of Spring Practice or start the fall practice season 5 days earlier. I'm asking because each school in CT was given that choice this year. Which do you think is more valuable?

Tough one - I think for us though the better value would come with the extra five days for fall practice. Extra time for reps going in to the first game would help smooth things out I believe.

I would choose the alternative which would give me the most participation - the most kids.
Would spring sports hinder some or many of your players from football practice?
Would summer baseball hinder some or many of your players from football practice?
Try to find out which alternative will get the most football players involved.

Coach, this all depends on when the Fall practice starts. Here in Florida we can start Aug. 10, we don't play until after Labor Day. For us, that's a long time.
Having 2 weeks in the Spring may be a better thing for us, IF you can get enough kids to come out. However, if 1/2 your team is playing baseball, you are not going to get anything meaningful done anyway.
Another thing about Spring practice, kids know that it's not real. I don't mean that they don't work hard, they do, even with the game/Jamboree,Scrimmage at the end of it, they still know it doesn't really count.
However, having Spring practice does allow me to experiment with new things and kids at different positions. Then we have a long time to evaluate what we've done before Fall practice begins.
So, to me-"It just depends" might be the best answer.

IMO, I would have to chose the 10 days of Spring Ball. The time spent would give the players and coaches insight to what offensive and defensive schemes/plans/philosophies would best fit the team in the fall. It would give the coaches the chance to see what areas of weakness may occur and where the off-season/summer planning for fall practices need more emphasis. It would also give the coaches and players the areas of strength to team should continue to develop in the fall practice sessions.
If the teams are involved with 7-on-7 competition during the summer the spring practices could an introduction period to the basic passing game so throughout the summer the players (QB & Receivers) fundamental skills, knowledge and reads could be sharpened.
I know some may think that there would more continuity with 5 more days included with the days allowed in the fall. But, as a former athlete as well, there will be the "itch/desire" to get into the playing of games and as a competitor I would know the games would be coming sooner if the 5 days of practice had not been there. There, again, in our state you must have x number of practices and the players have to have x number of practices to be eligible to play in the game. The 5 days, if that is what they be used for, would then make sense to me for those players on summer break with their families or at work during the summer.

I'd take the spring. Like Josey, I think that the season is long enough as it is.
The thing about the spring is that you can look at new stuff without serious consequences.

I have no spring practice and only 4 days to prepare my kids before our first scrimmage. Its kinda silly but thats how its done. Id rather have the extra days in the fall.

I would take the 10 days in spring. A nice little jump start before summer. 2 a days is LONG enough waiting for that first game.

Our decision was to forgo spring ball and take the five extra days. As many of you have stated, we lose a lot of guys to baseball and lacrosse which is be in the Northeast. In fact we would have been missing QB1 - baseball, and QB2 to lacrosse. I am worried about not having practice to lead us into 7 on 7 season.

At least with lacrosse they are running around and being somewhat physical. Get them out when their seasons are done and have them start throwing - they will come around.

10 DAYS OF SPRING PRACTICE. YOU COULD INSTALL ALL YOUR FORMATIONS AND MOTIONS, GET TERMINOLOGY COVERED, & GET YOU BASE SCHEMES IN. WHEN CAMP HITS YOUR ARE AHEAD OF THE GAME.

It sure would be nice to have spring practice to be able to experiment with things, but to also get a jump on mastering/perfecting fundamentals. You'd be able to get more done in camp/2 a days.
I'd at least like to have 7 on 7 in the spring!

thats a tough question. The school I'm at now most of our kids are baseball, track, golf and tennis in the spring. We live in rural farm community with a lot of lakes etc.... so starting another week earlier would put our kids another week away from the lakes and farming. I'm glad we don't have to make this decision.

I would take the 10 days of spring practice. Don't need to work on any scheme just fundamentals. In Ohio, we have 3 weeks of 2-a-days this year in addition to 7 contact dates and lifting so it would be a long pre season.

I would take the 5 days before the season. It would give us extra time to prepare for the upcoming season. During the spring we lose alot of athletes to other sports. IMO

I would want to take the 10 days in the spring. As coaches have already mentioned before, it gives you a chance to better evaluate palyers in the offseason, and I would really like to know before we get to camp if jimmy can play end or if we need to move him.

For us, we'd have to do the five extra days--we have so many kids who do track or baseball that we wouldn't have many available for spring ball. Of course, in IL we get 25 contact days over the summer and I'd much rather have that than spring.

I think it's all based on what you can do in your state.
In GA, I want the spring, I see my kids 4 times a week 3 hours a day for 8 weeks in the summer plus 7 on 7 and we get 15 days of practice before the 1st scrimmage. So I would alsways want Spring over 5 extra days.
