Reading another post about what folks eat before/during games, I was surprised at how many coaches chewed.
More for curiosity's sake than anything, do your players know you are doing so?
If so, is it accepted that's just what coaches do?

I dip in practice, sunflower seeds in the games.
My kids know..heck,i think some of them smoke weed...
I wanna stop, they want me to stop...any help?
Its very common in the south..my HS coach kept chew in his mouth, even during school.
My wife taught at a South GA HS,she always found dip cups and cans in her trash..LMAO

I'm a seed guy, but the HC chews any chance he can get. It's certainly frowned upon by the administration
Last year, we had two kids fail pi$$ tests. Now, I don't know about you guys, but when I get a call that Johnny failed his pi$$ test, I automatically picture Johnny with a strap on his arm trying to find a vein.
Both times last year, the kids who got caught had a dip on the way to school. One was 18. Both were farmers who dip daily with their old man.
The only problem I have with it is that its not a great example to set for the kids, especially when they get in trouble for it.

That is very true and I feel the same way, but every coach on our staff from 8th up chews/dips except one, and he is from Pittsburgh, {censored} yankee... LOL The AD dips all day long, spits in the office trash cans; While talking to principal. I would say about 75% of our team does, and that is down from 10 years ago. Just the culture here. Parents know, the kids can buy it anywhere. Not allowed during the day, but out of sight out of mind. Hell if I am out will bum off of kids... Have had refs bum off of me on sidelines, and I am Varsity. No body else on the staff likes copenhagen, so they make sure that I get the same headset.... Rooster p.s. I know bad bad me.... but I really only dip during the season and while fishing Copenhagen it makes me feel so good. Copenhagen the way I know it should. I put a little chew in my mouth, go spittin' and a-slobberin' all around the house, that Copenhagen, it makes me feel so good.

don't make the mistake of thinking that only the southern teams are enjoying the fine taste of a chaw during practice or games. i coach in pa, played in pa, and most coaches i come in contact with chew regularly...including myself. dealing with kids today, i ask how can you NOT chew??? lol. as far as being a role model, i agree, but let's not forget that what we are doing is a far cry from what most of our players are doing (weed, coke, smack, and who knows what else). i remember playing football with a kid that would take muscle relaxers prescribed to his dog!

In PA as well and a ton of guys chew up here as well. A ton of the kids do to. I feel bad about doing it around the kids, but they know and some of them do it as well. It's bad I know.

My HC, half the staff, and about 1/3rd of the kids dip. The HC always has a trash can close so that he can spit during weight sessions.

I chew, but never around students, football players or my kids. Chewing on the sidelines is a big no no with me.

No tobacco on school grounds, by anyone. That said, our JV OL coach sneaks it by pretending to take sips of a coffee cup while watching track/lacrosse, etc. Never coached with him, but I think he lays off while the kids are around. He's the only one though.

I started dipping at the ripe old age of 5. In those days it was considered candy. Dip was for the kids, the men chewed tobacco. The storekeeper wouldn't let kids buy tobacco, but dip was okay. When we reached the eigth grade, we started chewing tobacco, like men. But our HS football coach wouldn't allow it because he thought we might choke on it. He didn't mind dip. Hell, he smoked cigarettes at practice, and nobody had the guts to confront him with it because they were afraid he would kill them. He was a vietnam vet and had flashbacks all the time.
I would say 80% of all the males 10 and older do it in this area.

I dip, I dip just about all day everyday. Every class period during the school day, hell I carry the can in my pocket. Granted they aren't huge dips but they are enough to get me by. I tried leaving it in the truck once - but not since. When I coached at the country school I'm not sure I remember a kid who didn't dip. That's where I graduated from, it's a Copenhagen school and pretty much part of the culture. I coach in the city, our kids don't even know what it is. Hell I tried to buy some at the gas station down the street from our school and the guy looked at me like I was crazy. Said "what's the matter with you? I can't sell that chit, brothers don't chew." Trying to buy dip downtown is pretty much hopeless.

I grew up on a farm on the central coast of California. Raised Angus beef, almonds, alfalfa hay, and dry wheat. We were country.
My father chewed Days Work plug and dipped Copenhagen. Just bit the corner off of the plug and started chewing. Would pull out the cellophane wrapper a few minutes later. He would buy the roll of cans, open them all and fill each with Calvert's whiskey, then put them all in the fridge. Used to set the wad on the dash of the pickup when we went into the burger joint. I grew up with everyone having the white ring on the back pocket of their jeans. I was in high school before I realized that the left side of pickups didn't come streaked with brown. My dad kept the 2 teeth he pulled from the right front of his mouth in the desk drawer. As a kid I tipped over many a spittoon, talk about a gawd-awful stench and mess. Lost my mother to cancer after smoking since she was 16. Not lung, but it was accelerated by the smoking. She tried several times to quit but it is just too powerful.
It's illegal on school grounds. It's illegal for under-18 to have it/buy it. The school has a no tolerance policy on drugs, I'm not sure yet if that includes dip. Never seen anyone use plug. The former coach and his DC and a couple of coaches dipped all the time at practice, film sessions, in the office. They also brought in the f-bomb as acceptable part of coach-player dialog. Both ways. 3 players now have tattoo's, just like the HC and his DC. Great guys, probably would be better friends if I hadn't been in a difficult coaching position/relationship with them. I've got 1 coach on staff that dips during weights and will probably during practice, he did last year. I'll be talking to him about it as I don't view chewing as healthy or a proper leadership example for young people
We practice on grass but play on a turf field so seeds, gum, etc. are out. Nothing but X-ade or water.
Not trying to be preachy here or anything, I just don't think it is something that I want in my life or on my team. I've seen what it does first hand, I've seen how powerful it is, I've experienced loss, and I've seen how impressionable the players are to what we do. I've never had any inclination to try tobacco in any form. Each to their own.

The only reason I quit was because of a horrible incident when I was 18. I was playing third base with a nice juicy chew in my mouth. I was turned onto it shortly before that and was completely addicted to having it about 3 games into summer baseball.
Anyway, a kid hits a shot down the 3rd base line - about 4 inches foul. I dive for it, glove it and somewhere between hitting the ground and bouncing up to throw, I swallow the whole phukking wad in my mouth. (There's probably a better way to phrase that but I will assume we are all adults...)
As the 3rd base ump yells foul, I throw up on his shoes. Then again...and yet again....and yes...again. Needless to say, I switched to seeds the next game and haven't gone back.

Where I use to coach/went to school guns were illegal on school grounds too but drive through the parking lot right now and I bet you see at least 10 high powered rifles or shotguns in trucks...it's planting season, got to shoot those ground hogs now before they tear up the crops. and during Deer season...chit...there are guns all over that parking lot but then again, they also close school first day of gun season, it's a pre-scheduled day...part of their school calendar...I kid you not. Yep we close for deer season too. And everything else, Ditto. When I playing in high school just a few years ago had a couple of buddies that dipped during the games and they were both DT's, they loved spitting on the hands of the OL while in stances. Corn dodgers are a little harder to find......... But walking out the door right now to work cattle and cut calves, so guess what is for supper??? Rooster

I sit here in disbelief... reading about all the coaches... Men of discipline... admit to their addiction... Of putting dirt in their mouth... and then spitting it back out... My Grandma did it for a while... she was from 'bama... but that's about the only time I've ever really seen it. For shame coaches... for shame.

Gosh.....I really feel like an addict now, thanks khalfie, lol.....I gotta admit though... I came prepared for every practice and game.....1 pack of levi garrett = check...at practice = half for me, half for the young teacher coach's, who always bugged me for a chew.... at games= half for me, and half for the officials, close enough to our sideline to bum it from me, once they saw me with it......3-4 good cigars = check(if available, but definitely not sharing these with anyone)......pack of cigarettes = optional, depends on whether or not you have the good cigars, or for away games, to share with our DC on those long bus trips home, since he "always" left his in the truck......raincoat with hood, umbrella and dry towel = yeah, gotta have this stuff......keep the tobacco dry during those pesky rainstorms......wipe the tobacco stains off, when you get excited and accidently spit on some short kids helmet.....can hide under the hood or umbrella, while you smoke or chew.....then, if its really raining hard and depending on how sorry I feel for the ballboy at the time, I'll give him the towel and umbrella......now that I read this post over, it is kinda shameful.....but at least I don't drink and don't fu-kin cuss that d@mn much! ;D

About ten years ago I was refereeing in Wisconsin and on the rules test there is a question about what happens if a coach get caught chewing tobacco. I answer that he gets kicked out of the game, and load and bohold I am right. I am refereeing my first varsity game as line judge and a coach spits a chew and hits my shoe. I tell him that he better take that out. He doesn't and spits on my shoe again. I flag him and he is ejected. The head coach was not upset at all as he knew the rule.

Some of my coaches dipped while I was in high school. It didnt make me want to dip in any way, i just thought it was something that coaches did.
Now this past season the school I was at, it was illegal to have tobacco on school grounds. Now we were a big "country" type school, but I broke the no cursing rule on the first day on the job, and so i thought I should play it easy for a while.
At games I thought it would be ok if i did since I was up in the box, but again, I didnt want to take the chance.

All I'm sayin'...
This is obviously a "cultural phenomenon", a particularly nasty one... that coaches get a pass on... players get a pass on... even refs get a pass...
But some other particular "cultural norms", I've heard you same drug addicts derail and cry about...
1. Rap music... 2. sagging pants... 3. Minors drinking and smoking... 4. Minors having premarital sex...

3 out of your 4 are not illegal and another depends on your state, age and a number of other factors.
Underage drinking and use of tobacco products is illegal. Has nothing to do with if I use tobacco products or drink. I am of legal age and so if I wish to do so then I can.
