Finally had our first game today after the season start date being pushed back a little. We played hard but our kids lost 7-0. We went against a great team but I think the heat here hurt us more than anything. Their offense had the ball the ENTIRE first quarter, and of course was becoming exhausted. Then of course, you have the kids that arent paying attention and just stay on the field no matter what we call for, so we had to burn some timeouts to get them off in time. Had two parents call my assistant after the game saying that we should let him coach cuz we obviously really need the help. And of course their kids are the ones that dont ever know what to do and are only starting on defense cuz they cant remember when else to be on the field. We didnt get dominated and actually had a kid get tackled right at the goal line as time ran out.
We got three days to practice though cuz starting on Thursday, we have a gauntlet of games, with 4 games in 8 days. It will be fun to see how it goes.

Hey there, not trying to hijack the thread and im actually responding to #2 on the original post, but our season finally started today and saw a defense I hadnt seen before.
...........................................X............................................. ......................................................................................... .................................X..................X.................................. ......................................................................................... ........X.........X.....X......X.......X........X........X......X.........X..... ................................O.O.O.O.O.O.O................................. ..............................O..........O..........O............................... ...........................................O...........................................
Yes, vs double wing this teamed line up like this, and all I could think was ok it helps on the sweeps, but what about the multitude of plays that can hit up the middle? lol. I dont know if they ever changed cuz I went to go watch another game, but has anyone ever seen something like this before? We play them in our second game and I am hoping they line up like this against us.

On the topic of just being able to coach up your team, last year, a team in our classification beat a team 101-0.....ill let that sink in a little hahaha. Well after the game, the losing coach was talking to the media and they were asking him, do you think Coach so-and-so was running up the score. And the losing coach did the responsible thing and said "hell, I dont know if they were or not, but its our job to stop them. It doesnt matter what they do, we have just got to get our own kids better". Now our staff actually got a copy of the tape and went back and looked at it, and they guy was running it up, padding stats, all of that. But I was really happy to hear the other coach seemingly hold no grudge about it.

Right now I'm a position coach and have been for several years, as our HC has been our OC as well. I've always been on board and did my part as a position coach. My goal is to get promoted and become an OC, or at least be in a position where I can be more involved in game planning and play calling, but I feel I may not get my chance where I'm at now. Is it in my best interest to express my goals of being more involved with my HC, or should I just keep quiet and show my worth through my continued hard work and knowlege? Are there any other coaches who've had to wait their turn for a few years, and if so what advice do you have? I can almost promise you that I can draw up a Pro I offense.. and ask my DL coach to put our front 4 in place in our base defense.. and he would not know how to do.. that is sad.. very sad.. I dont know if it was just me or what, but last year when I was a varsity assistant, I wanted to know (and did know), what every player did on 80% of the plays. I wanted to know the exact footwork for every back, linemen and receiver. Defense I am still playing a bit of catch-up, but I always thought that you should try to know as much as possible. Of course, I am just a 2nd year coach so im still learning the types of coaches out there.

The cheerleaders here always yell we want a touchdown when the other team is driving. I don't know if they want us to lose or what. Our band has 15 members, seriously, and parents play in it as well as people that graduated 8 years ago. I was in the same situation. I politely told the band director to shut the band up or he would have a tuba up his @$$ if he didn't learn when to play and when to zip it. Never had any troubles after that conversation. I did find out he complained to one of the senior teachers on staff, I was in my second year, and the elder statesman basically said "you got 15 kids making noise not a band..." LOL! its great when a senior teacher has the football teams back, or they can at least see how bad the band is.

I do not have single numbers. I have 10 through 99. single numbers promote individuals. when you are a team it is a collectivist situation. you cannot stand out. sort of like government health care where you are just a number. Obviously this is just my opinion, but I feel the exact same. First year head coach, only youth, but I dont allow any single digit numbers here either. Not all kids will do this, but some will just pick one of those numbers in order to set themselves apart.

well I took in everybodys advice and told them that if they want to do a fundraiser or get a sponsorship to pay for it, then the players could have it. But EVERYONE has to have their name on their jersey, nobody is to be "forgotten about" or "skipped over". Everyone seemed to take this in very well. Also, when I spoke with my Team Mom yesterday after practice, she was really surprised by how that father had acted, apparently hes a really nice guy when his other half isnt around lol

Well coach, that is a real positive that you didnt sustain any major injuries. We havent played yet, but the season starts next saturday and our offense seems to be off to a slow start at best. We only have one formation in so far and a couple plays at best. We have the athletes to make things happen and a big front line with mostly 10 year olds who have all played before. Best of luck to you next game coach.

I am getting a lot of really great ideas here. About the committee thing for everybody to have their name, i may propose that i will allow names if they form a committee to do a fundraiser to pay for every player so everyone is still a team. I know this shouldnt be a major issue but i think i just dont want this to grow into something bigger during the season.

eickst, i dont allow the single digit numbers either. This is only the second day of the problem but i am already tired of it. i am going to have a meeting at the beginning of practice while my coordinator starts the kids off and basically tell them exactly what you said eickst. Thanks everyone for your responses so far

Yeah it is all up to me and having the names on or not. Whether it is right or not, here I am. and yeah, i know today at practice its going to be a huge distraction from me coaching the kids. But seriously, I know ill be laughing pretty hard once I take a step back from the situation lol.

Hey everyone, we are coming along decently well. Got some good speed and some talented kids. Anyways, I need some advice fast for a situation with a parent. As some of you know, this is my first youth position and first head coaching position so I am trying to do the best that I can. Well yesterday, my coordinator calls me and tells me to be ready at practice because a parent had been calling him and asking 21 questions about things. Not the normal "why isnt jimmy playing RB, or why isnt he getting more playing time?" No this parent was calling and asking why I (HC) was not going to allow the kids to have their names on the backs of their jerseys and why we decided on blue socks instead of orange, this and that.
Well anyways, we get to practice and he comes up and asks me in person, and I tell him what I told every other parent there before, that we are a team and no one member is going to be singled out. Even ourselves as coaches would not have our names on our shirts (even though we probably wouldnt have anyway) well we go on for about 5 minutes at the beginning of practice and he says "well coach im just letting you know that we are going to probably going to put his name on their anyway". He had also told me they always let us before, this and that, and that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I shut my smart a$$ mouth instead of telling him that he can play youth for 6 years. Well practice continues and his boy gets hurt because he doesnt pay attention and got rattled a little. Well the boys mom comes on the field and openly questions our staffs ability to coach in front of everyone.
Well after practice I was talking to my Team Mom and she told me that there is at least a few other parents who plan on putting their child's name on the jersey even after they all agreed with me when I gave my reasons. Also, I am not the only team in the league that doesnt have nameplates, I know at least a few other teams that dont.
So my question is, should I just stick to my guns and tell them no nameplates? or that and also that any player that has a nameplate is not in the team uniform and will not be allowed to play? My older brother (who is a coach as well) told me to just let it go, it is youth after all. But I can already see that these parents are already turning into cancers on our sidelines while we are practicing. I want to almost just tell them that if they dont like how i coach or disagree with me, then go ahead and take their son because it is because a problem at our practice.
Any advice would be great everyone, I just need to end this as quick as possible.

I agree with everyone else here, that since safety is the number one concern, you should have a discussion with the parents as soon as you can. Let them know why his playing time will be a concern. Good luck to you.

They are 9-10 year olds. A bit over half the team has played football before.
83, would you mind sending me some of your trips stuff that you talked about?
I still want single wing, but I know one of the most important aspects is having a reliable center to make consistent snaps, and I dont know if we have that right now. We havent installed anything yet, so its no big deal if we make a change.

I am installing the single wing this year, my first year as a youth coach and first year with the single wing (sounds like a great combination) lol. Anyways, had a meeting tonight with my one assistant for the time and we both kinda want different things from the offense. I was completely content with staying with maybe 3 or 4 formations from the single wing and keeping the same base plays and obviously mixing in a few things to surprise the D. He is willing to go with the SW too, but wants to put in some other formations that the kids will use later on, i.e. I, Wishbone, those types of things.
My question is does anyone know a way we can both combine what we want without making things too complicated for the kids?

We played our QB at Sam backer last year. He did go down once with an injury, but we had an average enough backup and enough talent in the backfield to pick up the slack, but in your situation, it doesnt seem like you have that. I would probably look at what the other coaches suggest and put him at DB.

I wonder if IM horrible to coach with: 'the never give it a rest guy" I seriously can talk/work football every waking second. I dont have alot of time for grab arse and joking around either, I like to watch film, watch clinic videos, talk shop...I wonder if it gets old to my assistants? im the "oh no another football email" guy... the "lets use every available legal minute to get better" guy....ah well. hell coach, I wish I would have coached with some coaches like you last season. My brother was the DC and so I learned from him, and other than that, everyone was happy with what they knew already.

A coach that either doesnt know enough about his own scheme, or is too proud, to make a change during a game. Now im not talking about the straight T to air raid change like was mentioned earlier, but just someone so stubborn that they refuse to believe that they need to do something else in order to succeed.

And is it just me or does Crumpler look massive? I do not remember him being that large. No coach, I thought the exact same thing. Either he has been packing on the weight, or maybe that was just a visual effect of those throwback jerseys haha

Sometimes you gotta be brutally honest. My junior year in college, we were getting hammered 28-0 by halftime. Other team was bigger, stronger, faster, and completely outplayed and outexecuted us the first half. So the score didn't indicate how thoroughly we had been dominated. Anyway, our head coach comes in the locker room and very calmly says, "Fellas...this one got away from us. We aren't going to talk about winning this game because that just isn't going to happen today. Instead, what we are going to do is talk about what they are doing, make some adjustments, and then see if we can at least execute some plays and get a few stops on defense." So, that's what we did. And then we went out in the second half and scored 3 TDs. Still lost the game 42-21 but we at least recovered a small measure of dignity. Head coach is a great guy, too. One of the best coaches I ever had. He's a member of the state high school coaching association's Hall of Fame. Maybe file this under "Best speech ever?" [/quote] This isnt exactly the worst speech ever, but it was the most pessimistic speech I ever heard while I was playing, and it came from a coach that I respect greatly, lol. It was in our first district game if I remember correctly. Now we were a bad team, we didnt win a single game that season and good Lord we did not have any speed. He was our OC and we came in at halftime and basically said, in not so many words, to basically forget about this game and just go have some fun. Well hell, that was all that we had wanted to hear for a while, so we went out and put together some drives and scored a bit. We still got beat pretty bad but that speech always stuck with me. Like I said, not the worst speech ever, but just the most pessimistic and always stuck with me, haha.

Try skipping your teacher work day and then asking your principal for all that BS on the first day of school. And yea, I know "he's a kid" right...sure, I get it...he's in HS...he's responsible enough to get his license, to drive a car, to get a job...and he is not responsible enough to come to weights SOMETIMES?? Don't sweat it, you're better off. DC, I couldnt agree more. Yes we call them kids, and they still arent technically adults, but a lot of them are all old enough to get jobs and to drive, just like you said. Being able to make it to weights, I think, is something that should be completely do-able if he is this old.

I have to agree with everyone else here. I think we have seen how far offenses and defenses can be pushed with relation to the rules. All we are going to see from now is the cycle all of us know.
