I would like a few new ideas on timed conditioning drills. One of my favorites is from one sideline and back to the other on the stopwatch.
Do you have any others that have been good for you to vary our conditioning going into this season? I don't prefer to go with long ones like the mile run. Thank you in advance.

We have done timed gassers by position group like you said. One thing to keep in mind "What do you do if someone fails...and what do you do if that kid has no chance of making it in the time allowed"

We run "Intervals" once a week on Mondays.
10 - 100's 8 - 80's 6 - 60's 4 - 40's 2 - 20's 1 - 10
All runs are timed as are the rest periods. 100's will start at the beginning of the season with 18 seconds with 18 seconds rest, then 80's will be 16 seconds with 16 secs rest, etc. Most players will finish in the time then many will take it upon themselves to go out and run with slower teammates. We cannot finish until everyone is done. As the year progresses we will reduce the times. It works out well. The whole team runs at the same time.
Another we run is a lot like gassers, we call them 10 - 20's. We run by position groups. Slower groups go first. on the whistle the first group runs to the 10, then back to the goal line, then to the 20 and back. Rest until their group is called again and will run 20 - 30 and so on. The beginning of the season we go to 40 - 50, however, as the year progresses we will get longer.

Quarter Training! We will go for 12 minutes doing 6 second sprint and 12-18 rest! Then a 7 second sprint and a 14-21 second rest, then a 8 second sprint and then a 16-24 second rest. We just keep going for 12 minutes. This is more like game conditioning and it trains the appropriate energy system.
We use gassers and other longer ones in the summer to build a base a little but we won't run them in season, unless we use it for consequences!

We run team 40's. we try to give four groups around 30 seconds to finish. so if we were doing 10 fortys then they would have 5 min. First group goes, second group is ready, first group crosses the finish a coach blows a whistle, the second group goes. So on till when the fourth group crosses then the first group goes. Goes on the idea of the length of a single play, and then having to recover in about 25 seconds for the next play.

Something we started just the past two days is group runs. Let me explain. I got this off of a coach on the mega clinic site. We timed our guys in the 40. We then ranked them and put them in groups of 10. We have 7 groups A, B, C, ETC. We lined them up for a 40 yard dash. We only mark who wins and who loses, thats it. You could have ties, if someone jumps that is a loss, still run the 40, mark who finishes last as well. I have my asst at the finish line and they just mark a line to the left of their name with a win and to the right with a loss. I then take the sheet and move players, If they had the most wins I move them up to group A and move the player with the most losses down to B. Repeat this for every group. The goal should be to move to A or Up obviously. I wasn't sure about this, but we gave it a shot. Great results. We only ran 5 40's, but they were the fastest we have run. Nobody wants to lose or go down. Some want to move up so they push even harder to get the win. Then today I was planning on gassers and then one of my coaches said lets use the groups. We lined up Group a to the right and B to the left. They were still only running against their groups, but we recorded who won and lost. I only will change the groups once a day. Highly recommend great competition, good work.
