Congrats Jerry, glad to see it happen for you. You certainly have your work cut-out for you starting a program, but it is a historical mark. Good luck in everything you do. OJW

Thanks guys..I appreciate it..learned much from here and have much to go. We are starting a brand new program and I will get the rising 9th' and 10's..the rising juniors get to pick which school they want to attend...don't know what is going to happen there...we will be playing a full varsity schedule..w/o seniors and at best 1/2 a junior class..ouch..there have been plenty of phone calls wanting to play us in the future...Let's focus on the positive..it is a great school in a great community that is 7 miles from my house...we will have a turf game field and a very good chance of a turf practice field..all new equipment , uniforms, shoulder pads etc..it is a chance to build something from scratch..not too often in a lifetime do you get an opportunity like that..The principal is all gung-ho (right Now)LOL

"...a veteran coach who literally wrote the book on defense"
Well, he wrote a book on defense.
Seriously, though, congratulations JG. In that situation, my advice would be to not worry about the wins right away. Do things the right way and lay the foundation for the future.

It sounds like you are in a great situation, even if it is going to be a long row to ho the first couple of years. Congratualtions on the new job and good luck coach.

That's tempting... Any word on English positions? Also, anyone want to start a pool for Jerry's first 'meltdown post'?

That full varsity schedule is going to be a bear, I know a guy that had to start they way because his county demanded it. A JV schedule is more realistic, but sometimes you have to play the cards you're dealt. But man, with your facilities you certainly don't have anything to complain about. Can you send me a few of those extra briefcases of $100 bills you got laying around? When a friend and I started the program here, the admin was really gungho. I told them to hold their enthusiam because they were going to need it during the season. We had to play a full varsity schedule with much larger schools, some 4X's our size. I told them that we were not going to win any games so get that out of their heads, and that when we scored a td, IF we scored a TD, that it would be a great celebration. They didn't believe me. They thought that we were ready-we weren't. We didn't score a TD until the 4th game of the season, and at that point, we did have a huge celebration. We lost 48-12, closet game up to that point. But I was wrong, we didn't lose every game, we won our last one in a blow-out. It was a miracle and we got an entire page in the sports section from it. Whoo-hoo. But you are right there ol' JG buddy, you rarely have a chance to start a program. OJW

I don't know why we didn't start w/ a JV schedule the last two schools that opened in this county did...The good/bad thing is they are opening another school here too. (yes our county will open 2 new hs's in the same year) and we actually play them twice..The coach over there won the state championship in our state last year and chose to go to a new school. So if our record can be like theirs...

OJW..I am going to hire the best guys possible..so I really don't know yet...People not scheme.....that being said, if I end up as OC we will be a triple team either from gun or UC....You guys really don't know me but I actually have more experience on the offensive side of the ball..I am just a boring triple option guy so I go over on the flexbone board and post over there..we were running Ga Southerns stuff in 1990... in the early- mid 90's we were a freeze option (syracuse style)team that ran a little west coast stuff too..Fun...the funny thing is that it wasn't genrally called west coast stuff quite yet

Ah, yes, another S.O.T.S (son of Ted Seay) I see. JG, If you can run it, the Flexbone is very hard to stop. You are right, I didn't know your history. If you've coached ball for a long time, like a lot of us, you'll end up on both sides of the ball. Depending on where I was needed, I've traded sides sevearal times. I think that it helps me. I will tell you that for me, offense is way easier. On defense-I have to know me and I have to know them. On offense-it's like playing chess with people. Back 5 years ago, I went to the Rocket Jet stuff and have found it wonderfully flexable to different talent. Ted's stuff is great, I really wish I'd just chosen to run the Wildbunch full time this year and see what happen. I thought I had the talent (of should I say LACK of talent) for the Doublewing-I didn't. We ended the season getting back to my Rocket/Jet and Ted's ideas.
