Does anyone know how to get the waxy layer off of a new football? We have gone synthetic since I have been coaching but decided to try leather game balls this year.
Thanks!

Have QB's break them in by throwing one hoppers to each other, I also always throw our new ones in the dryer for about 10 minutes with a few towels. The one hoppers are fun for the kids to try to do and it only takes about 10 throws a piece, works best on natural grass!

Abusing them a little seems to work, in my experience.

Throw them in the dryer. Warms up the film and creates a good grip! Kind of loud but the outcome is faster for breaking in new balls.

Wilson makes a ball brush that will bring the tack out of the leather. They work great. We always use them for a week before using them in a game as well.

In high school, my OC and I used to take the 2 game balls out 1 hour before everyone else had to be dressed and in the pre-game meetings and throw 1-hoppers to each other while we went through our entire gameplan for the game. After the 1st one feels sticky (about 30-40 throws) you switch. Works just fine.
If it's going to be a wet game, just use a practice-ball. Gonna get messed up beyond recognition anyway, so no need to get a new one out and ruin it in one use.
