And I thought a team that runs the Wing-t vs a team that runs the sniffer in a shoot out was bad...63-58...

During the off season talk to coaches you respect that have built a championship program. Most coaches are willing to help if you just ask.

I still hate equipment hand out and really hate collection. Equipment hand out (helmets especially) sucks. Making sure everything fits properly or best as you can to a kid that has a very peculiar shaped head...medium is too small large is big no amount of air or changing out cheek pads gets it to fit properly. As far as collection its easy for us. Equipment guy tells boys put everything in your travel bag and drop it in his office. He separates everything into boxes for reconditioning as he pulls it out of their bag. If something is missing they find out the next day.

I hate having to run the scout team. We are not able to 2 platoon here at my school. I am the OC, so when we practice defense, myself and another coach run scout team. That is a very FRUSTRATING job. If you have never had to run the scout team, I think you should thank the guys that do. It is way harder and more frustrating than I could have ever imagined. The best is when you show them the diagrams on scout and the O-line wants to know if they run block or pass block. I hate bringing this up but even if you've played Madden you should have a general idea of what the drawn lines mean. Especially when you put in you own offensive terminology...

Prayers your guys way. As far as support maybe get some memorial decals (initial type) or maybe get some of those mini decals (if they are the braves get a tomahawk) for the back of your helmets. We had a kid at our cross town rival get diagnosed with leukemia and couldnt play against us, we got those decals of his initials for our helmets. Just a thought.

The school I left last season our HC spent the last 2 years in the box (Doctors orders) due to health concerns (blood thinners). I was the Assistant OC and had been in the box my whole career (10 years) because he trusted the info I was relaying to him offensively and defensively. The "guy" on the field was the longest tenured coach (25 years) on staff behind the HC, and he was the Assistant HC. HC was a little nervous at first, but he got over it.

SORRY COACHES...My younger brother was on my computer and added that last sentence. Idiot. I have never done that.
We have put our starting defense back on the field when teams have scored too many points to be comfortable, even sometimes left our starting defense on the field and slowly rotated DL and LBs out of the game or until the other team just started running the ball to eat up the clock...

The previous school I coached was a small school but tops in the section. Our philosophy was you have to play us for a half. Obviously based on the skills set of the other team we would change our play calling as the half progressed. However, that being said, if you are gonna leave your starting offense on the field and throw fades against a DB that doesnt really belong on the field, I will put my starting offense on the field throw a fade then go for 2 to prove a point.

We cannot have more than 28 I believe. Generally you have a "0" week game, but our bye is 0 week this season.

We had a projected number of 30 kid at the end of the school year. At our orientation meeting last Wednesday we had 50, with 5 that we knew would be missing due to being international students. We are still going strong, no one has quit and we actually were just alerted to possibly 3 more athletes registering for school this week. First season for our staff at this school. Boys are excited, but it is progressing slowly. No spring or summer programs so we are trying to teach completely new schemes to a group of kids who many are first time players. BUT, it is nice to finally be in season. Good luck this season my coaching brethren.

When watching a team live (also assuming we are filming / getting the film), I like to look at situational things. What is their go to on 3rd & short? 3rd & long? Goaline? After a momentum shift (positive or negative)? What are their scoring plays? etc...sometimes on the film, a play will be missed, cut out, not downloaded properly, etc...especially if it is a high tempo team. Nothing worse than watching one play, then the next play is a PAT and you have no idea how the hell they scored! back when everyone still did VHS (my first year coaching) there was a team that was notorious for trading less than complete games their coach would keep the only real copy of the game for himself all of the ones he traded would have plays cut out (which on VHS takes some time to do, means you stop the recording on one VHS, play the other, then resume recording) he would get out trick plays and new things he added in so the next opponent wouldnt see them lol Shoot. Even with HUDL we have gotten films like that. First play tackle for a loss. Next play they are 20 yards further down the field. THAT is why we still send a scouter to our watch our next opponent...

In CA in our section we have a mandated 2 week dead period to be done at each schools discretion. At my previous school is was the 2 weeks prior to the start of camp. We also take the a week off right after school is out. Most coaches schedule their vacations during these times. At my new school being a boarding school we dont have the kids during the summer. At first i thought wow i get my summer back. However I didnt know what to do with myself come July, and we dont open camp for another week. Im starting to get a little anxious now...

When we are involved in a 4 way type scrimmage we do the 15 plays #1 O 15 plays #1 D, 10 plays #2 O 10 plays #2 D, 10 plays rest of O 10 plays rest of D. No Special Teams.
We have also done a format where we played a half of football, real game scenario. No live rush on PAT/Field Goal or Punt. KO team would run down KOR return would take a knee. Play the Punt where it lays. Kick off would be a touch back unless pooch kicked. After the half was complete we would do a 2 min period, you would just go, regardless of the outcome score, stop, turnover, until your 2 minutes were up. If you scored, were stopped, or turned the ball over you rest at the -40. Then 10 reps of O and 10 reps of D for those guys who didn't play.

If he is a great kid like you say, maybe find a way to make him a student coach type. I have done this with a few kids that have approached us with their heart set on quitting. I ask them if they would still be interested in contributing in other ways. Make them a 'manager' but with a different title. These kids have become our game filmers etc...

There are a few schools in our area that make sure there is water or Gatorade in the press box for the visiting coaches to drink. One school (a more affluent area) even has a grill behind the press box, specifically for the people in press box, and they offer the visiting coaches a hot dog or hamburger. The dogs are better than the ones they sell at the snack bar...
Last summer we hosted a 7 on 7 game. A parent for a kid on the other team owned a pizza joint down the street from our school. Towards the end of the game there was about 40 pizzas and a few cases of water for both teams to enjoy.

Anyone have an idea on how to invite these D1 schools around the country to do a satellite camp at their school. I think it would be great to have these types of camps held on our campus, but don't know how to make it a reality. I don't know that they have them at HS campuses. I was at one yesterday but it was at a college. We just hosted a joint Arizona/Nevada camp and a separate Washington State camp at our high school...

California coach here. Our section is one where you can only play JV or Varsity week to week, not both. This hurts when we play out of section teams that send their back ups down to JV and we have to abide by our section rules but the opponent doesnt.
For us, all sophomores, unless absolute studs, play JV. Juniors that might help us as seniors but are not quite ready play JV. Frosh only play Frosh, during playoffs some get brought up for depth and to see them compete against Varsity guys if we think they might help the following season.

Our HC is old school, we start the summer with a grade book. Each position coach is responsible for attendance of his group. We take attendance for both offensive and defensive periods. The offense checks the box and the defense hi-lites the box We do this to see if certain kids are skipping out on one side of the ball or the other. We keep trying to get him to use excel buuuuuut...
