Early 2000s (2003) my brothers were starting to wear the butterfly pad at the HS level.
Had a kicker/punter at my last school wear a cowboy collar because his frosh/soph years he also played DE. He was the starting WR his JR/SR year that could also drop down and play TE. He even wore it in college

Coach Gladnick is a stand up guy, does things the right way and puts his athletes first. This news when it broke was a total shock in the coaching community in San Diego County.

Maybe I am wrong, but it feels as if there are two different discussions going on here. Are people writing about sub varsity high school teams within a HS program going rogue? That would be asinine, especially since those players are an injury or a suspension away from playing on Friday night. OR are they writing about youth/pop warner/JH feeder programs going rogue? Which to me is not an issue. In some places varsity and JV are the extent of the 'program'. In some it is V/JV and middle school. In some it is V/JV/MS and youth league. My previous stop it was like this Youth flag 1st & 2nd grade Youth tackle 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th MS 7th MS 8th HS 9th HS Varsity and JV The HC established all the programs offense and defense, drills. tackling, etc... for all of it. The whole community was bought bottom to top to be Team Mascot. There was a local team a number of years back that they ran the Wing-T from Pop Warner up. The Freshman and JV teams were always tough offensively because they had sometimes 5-6 years running the offense. It helped that they were the only HS in their district.

As the JV OC for a number of years at a previous school I prided my self in having my JV kids ready to be called up to varsity if needed. We ran the base stuff and executed it well. But we would also run some stuff to show our HC that our fit into our overall scheme offensively. Eventually some of that stuff would filter up to varsity.

One school we did IHOP or Dennys. $3 for a stack of pancakes or plate of spaghetti.
Another school it was up to the parents, usually some kind of high carb meal.
Current school whatever the mess hall serves.

At my last school we started meetings at 8am Saturday. Usually go over injury report, league results from the previous night. Bring up anything that needed to be discussed as a staff. Quick discussion of our game the night before. Start game planning around 9 work until 3.
Our HC would spend most of the time with the defensive staff. Offensive staff would break down film and write up game plan. HC would meet with offensive staff around 2. We wrote the plan and finalized it with the HC. Mostly our game planning is to just discuss any changes/tweeks at may have seen on film from their games this year vs last year if it is a recurring opponent. Then any adjustments that we need to make.
Current school we don't meet on the weekends anymore.

NEVER IN FRONT OF THE KIDS.
When I was the OC I would correct the kids right then. If they responded with that's what coach told me I would respond run it back but I want to see something real quick and tell them to run it the way I wanted. Then I would let them know we would discuss in our after practice meeting and let them know the next practice.

I have coached all 4 of my younger brothers in HS and actually coached against the youngest when I switched schools. Fortunately they were all skill guys and I coached OL.
Our current HC has 2 sons on the team. He doesn't coach either of their position groups. And we have a great relationship to where I step in as Uncle Tua when the boys need that person.
The best advice I can give is coach them the same as any other member of your program. But take the whistle off when you walk out of the office for the day.

You coach in the Southern Section don't you? Yes sir. Also edited my post at the end to say *gap between 1 and 14.* We are a school of 200 and have a historical squad for our school this season. We were in D5 in San Diego, our smallest division. Our conference bumped us in to the big league this year after complaints from our league members. San Diego Section then created another division, D5AA and stuck us in it. This division is primarily comprised of theteams that were in our previous league, the one we were moved out of. Now those teams are pissed because they have to play us in the playoffs

Week 2 we are blowing a team out. Clock had been running since 5 minutes in to the 2nd half. Losing team was getting chippy. We stop them with about 1:30 left on the clock. White hat hands the ball to umpire and tells him to not to set the ball basically telling everyone the game is over. The white hat hacks the clock at 30 seconds. I'm telling the offense to come off the field and to go to the 50 to shake hands. Sideline official tells me to get off the field. I tell him I don't need to because the game is over. He tells me I need to be off the field incase the offense snaps the ball. I tell him how are we going to snap the ball if the umpire is holding the ball and our team is walking to the 50. He responds does that mean you don't have to listen to me. I look him straight in the eye and tell him that's exactly what it means. He was reaching for his flag as the horn sounded.

Here in Southern, California it's all out of whack. You have divisions that are decided at the END of the season based on computer rankings using a system called Calpreps. The purpose of this is competitive equity but the unintended consequence is that good, overachieving teams get punished by being placed in divisions too high and underachieving teams get placed too low. There are 14 divisions and the word MASSIVE doesn't even begin to describe the gap between 1 You coach in the Southern Section don't you?

I think you have your base scheme and you just adapt every year to your strengths. We still run our base stuff but we might be a little more pass heavy due to having a great QB one year and the next year be a little more run heavy. It all exists within our scheme.

QB and center are the only asked not to wear these. It is harder to hear their calls with those types of mouth pieces

We won a state championship a few years back and we had maintenance guys from the district coming and ordering rings. The only games they went to were the regional championship game and the state championship game.

My HC knows I like to cook so a knife set wouldn't be too weird to me. I received a pocket/EDC knife once. That was one I used everyday until it broke.

Quit via text message. Some concerns I had with the offense and offensive staff were not addressed during the off-season. I went back and apologized to the HC and the rest of the staff a couple weeks later.

Coaches, We used to have the "Mayors Cup" vs our neighbor. Here's a link to all Bleacher Report's Top College Rivalry Trophies . Do you have a trophy for your rivalry game? Anyone started one recently? I've been thinking about trying to get a couple going for our games. Played for this one in High School. It was awesome. "Battle of the Bear". Both schools 5 miles apart on the same road (Bear Valley Pkwy). Great tradition. We carried it around school all week during the week of the game. We would pass it to each other during passing periods and a different player got to take it to class. It was one of the coolest things i've been a part of. I would also like to add that it has been in its rightful place for a long time. You must be a San Pasqual Fighting Eagle

Southern California. The public school district I was at coaches were paid by the district. X number of stipends. Some coaches received full some received partial. HC decided on who received what percentage. Most Frosh coaches were volunteers. They got "paid" by boosters for filming, scouting, etc.

We don't sell space on our score board but we have sold space on the fence around the score board. I believe it is $750 and they get a 4x6 banner hung for the school year. They have to get the banner made by the company the school uses and we get a kick back from the banner company as well.

Our AD instituted a policy that if you start a sport you have 2 weeks to try it out. If you quit within those 2 weeks you are fine. But if you go longer you cannot go out for another sport without meeting with him first and explaining why this sport is important to you. Also when you quit you have a meeting with him citing the reasons for quitting 2 weeks of practice or 2 weeks of games? Practice/team activities.

If you ask our boys it's "FU¢£ TRI CITY" as they are our rivals or "It ain't talking chit if it's the truth".
The real one is Warrior Proud. Warrior Strong.
My alma mater, The Pirates, this year used "Fly the Black Flag" and "Hoist the Colors".

Depending on the length of the season/depth of playoff run determines what we did as a staff. At my last school we regularly played for a section championship with a couple state title runs. State was played the Friday before Christmas break, which also coincided with the end of our semester. So we had the Christmas break off. We had a 6th period football PE class at our school so we began training as soon as we got back from break. General athletic stuff, lifting, speed and agility work, and football basics: route running, RB drills, QB defensive reads, linemen withing the techniques.
At my current school we haven't made it past the first round, if we get in at all. So we usually give the boys 2-3 weeks before we start doing stuff. Mostly agility and speed work until after Thanksgiving break, all voluntary. After break it becomes mandatory if not in a winter sport. After Christmas break is when we begin football specific training.
