Yes. I was part of a staff where we did this for awhile. Worked out ok as the HC was the play caller so he wanted a better look. The OL coach and I were on the sidelines running the plays in with kids and OL made the adjustments when needed. OL guy was a long time vet so he was the goto guy on sidelines for refs. We had a pretty experienced staff with no egos so everyone did their job and it worked. Might not work for every staff depending on the staff dynamics.
I also know of a HC who was told by his super he had to coach from the box due to his sideline demeanor and antics. But that's another story all together.

About 6 years ago I coached at a school where the head coach was up in the box. He was also the OC and he could see better from the box. But like wingtol said, it was an experienced staff that had been together for awhile so it worked.

I think it depends on who will be on the sideline. If the HC is in the box, he had better have some experienced guys on the field who can run the show. I've seen games where the HC is in the box and the assistants on the sideline are worse than the kids. There has to be at least one guy who is experienced and mature enough to be the "HC on the field". Our head coach has been in the box from time to time. Most our staff has been together for over 15 years; so it has not been a problem for us.

This thread title made me smile. Before I got to the school where I spent most of my coaching career, the HC was hired and had a staff of guys that had never played football and knew very little about the game even though they had been hired and had coached for 3 years prior to the HC taking the job. He had such little faith in their knowledge that he went up in the box just because no one knew what he wanted them looking at. He tried to teach them but they were not football guys and had no idea what to do. He put the one guy he trusted to run the defense on the sideline and he rule from the box. It was hilarious and down right pitiful to watch at times but he turned things around and when I got there he put me in the box.

Darrell "Dr. Victory" Mudra was a college HC for 26 years at seven schools including Arizona and Florida State. He coached from the Press Box.

The school I left last season our HC spent the last 2 years in the box (Doctors orders) due to health concerns (blood thinners). I was the Assistant OC and had been in the box my whole career (10 years) because he trusted the info I was relaying to him offensively and defensively. The "guy" on the field was the longest tenured coach (25 years) on staff behind the HC, and he was the Assistant HC. HC was a little nervous at first, but he got over it.

Biggest thing is sideline control guy.
Do you have someone you trust to keep the peace, focus, etc. on the sidelines in your absence?
Doesn't have to know everything about football, but needs to be able to address officials, etc.

and control the coaches that may get out of hand, because they can get the head coach ejected.

I was always in the box when I was the Head Coach, mainly because I was the OC and had always called plays from the box as an assistant for 20 plus years. Like others have said, I was fortunate to have an experienced coach who could control the sidelines. I was questioned at times for doing it, because it isn't common around here. When we won Championships, I was "innovative." When we had down years, it was because "I wasn't on the field to inspire the kids."
