I go by Coach Tua, not Coach Meyers (my last name). Its a comfort thing.
Like others have said it just feels weird addressing my HS coaches by their first name even though I am considered by them to be a colleague now. I do still struggle to call my current HC By his last name because we were HS teammates.

A few years ago I had the privilege of attending the wedding of a high school teammate of mine. When my wife and I and another teammate of mine and his girlfriend arrived at the venue site we just happened to park next our HS OLine Coach. We greeted him and his wife, "Hello Coach and Mrs. Smith." They returned the greeting and his wife turned and asked him why we still refer to him as "Coach?"
For me it was two-fold. Habit and respect.
Habit.
I returned to coach at my alma mater and our HC has a policy that coaching is a profession and we needed to use our title of Coach around the boys to be professional. So when you spend 4 years in HS calling someone Coach. Then you work with them for x amount of years calling them Coach, it becomes automatic.
Respect.
They were my HS Coaches. They were a huge influence in my life during formidable years. And I appreciate the many lessons that were taught to me.
My question is what would be your response to your significant other when they ask the question "Why do they still call you Coach?"

Previous stop school got out at 225. Practice started at 240. Most kids had the 6th period Football PE class.
Current stop school gets out at 225. Practice starts at 300. Boarding school. First year students and any student with a D in any class has mandatory tutoring until 3. Those who are late because of grades have a reminder period (extra conditioning), first year students have a pass for the reminder period.

Split the Southern Section too... how so? Why is the Southern Section so big?

the only thing i would change in CA is to disband the Central Section - go full North and South (divided just south of fresno). Split the Southern Section too...

At one school I was at they had secured a grant to pay the coaches who put in the time in the off-season.
At my last school we had a football PE class. The HC, OL, DC, Slot Receiver, and WR coaches were all on campus and the latter 3 had prep periods during the football PE class. The off campus coaches werent required to be there if they couldnt. But come spring and summer workouts it was all hands on deck. most of the off campus coaches who couldnt make the Football PE class would come in after school and work with their groups during the off season.

Not to brag, but when you live/coach on the coast in San Diego county, you dont need an indoor practice facility. Just saying.

Like the article said, if the teammates werent giving him a hard time about being gay he would be alone in the locker room. We had to suspend both kickers, a starting DB/WR, starting DE/HB and starting OT from a game this season because of some teenage boys talking $h!t to each other over text. A couple of kids were threatened with expulsion. If Admin ever got a hold of one of the coaches phones, the whole staff would be gone as hard of a time we give each other.
I have a cousin who growing up we thought was gay. When he came out the closet it was such a relief because now we definitely could mess with him. In fact to this day when I see him I greet him with a big hug and say, what up up fruit cake? But he knows its all in fun and that I dont care if he is gay.

If we were facing a blitz heavy team we would include a blitz page with the blitzes drawn up. We include a fair amount of notes, but also require the players to write some of their own observations. We do check scouting reports from time to time to see who has what written down.

We're playing on an NFL field. I know they'll spot the ball where it would be on a high school field, but my concern is how tight the numbers are vs. high school numbers. Our receivers are so used to using them as landmarks, especially when lining up, and I'm wondering if anybody has had problems with this. We haven't. Just reiterate during the week and again durung pregame that the numbers aren't where they are supposed to be, and adjust accordingly...

Grass or turf field? We have played quite a few in an NFL stadium with grass. They always just put a tick mark on each line of the field to indicate the HS hash marks and another where the HS numbers would be. The next week when they cut the grass the extra marks would be almost gone.

This past Friday night/Saturday morning was an emotional roller coaster. Rivalry week. League championship on the line. Winner would claim at least a share of the title. loser was SOL. Both teams on the playoff bubble, we were 8 they were 9, win and youre in, lose and almost guaranteed to not make it. We lose, finish the season 7-3. We are telling the boys great job buying in to what we were trying to accomplish and making it a memorable first season for our staff. We are eating dinner with our wives and they are trying to tell us to keep our heads up, blah blah blah. Im thinking the season was a failure.
Then i get THE text at 10 pm. The school that held the tie breaker for league head to head match up with us (had we won) had just been upset. I get online and see that we had been bumped back in to the playoffs with their loss (BCS style points system) and our loss to the league champs. So now we are looking at match ups and get another text that the top 2 teams in our division had been upset also. Go our separate ways. Saturday morning I wake up and check online. We made it based on our strength of schedule and body of work. We end up in the bottom half of the bracket and get the 6 seed. League champs get the 8 seed. Top half of bracket is stacked with the 2 teams we didnt want to face in the first round and we travel to the 1 team we wanted to play, to exact revenge for a loss earlier in the season. We end up with the easiest path to the finals.
Wish us luck.

If in the above situation there was more than 3 seconds left (not the last play of the game), you could put 12 (or more) men on the field and play Buddy Ryan's "Polish Defense" smartfootball.com/defense/buddy-ryans-polish-goalline-tactic*I have no idea how NFHS rules would deter this...maybe somebody with more knowledge could chime in. Dont the refs automatically blow the whistle and penalize the offending team if there are more than 11 defensive players on the field?

Our INT call is money. We had a coach who used to pay his DBs. If they got an INT - $5, pick 6 +$20.

When I was running the scout defense I gave the incentive of points for a burrito. 7 points = a burrito of your choice. 1 point for a strip/caused fumble, .5 point per INT on Wednesday (pass heavy practice) (1 point for the fatboys if they could get an INT). POints were cumulative and reset when you got your burrito. At the end of the year we award a scout team player of the year (Kodak Award).

WE dont let the boys do all the pink everything. We as a staff feel most teams do it just because everyone else is. I worked for a HC who told the boys if they did it correctly, fund raise and donate to a breast cancer awareness/research foundation he would allow them to spat, wear pink gloves/towels, etc. We never had a team that wanted to do the extra work so it has never been an issue.
NEW SCENARIO
A parent approached the staff and team about wearing pink because her mother was diagnosed with, and is a survivor of, breast cancer. She offers to buy pink socks, tape for spat, towels, etc. However, the boys have to do the fundraising for the cause, which she will match up to $1,000, and it will be donated in the name of our football program. Looks like we might end up looking like bottles of Pepto Bismol.

During the game one of their boys yelled to his team, "Dont give up boys, keep playing with heart." I told their Db on our sideline to tell his team in the huddle I didnt want to hear that again. To tell them they showed that they have plenty heart. I usually dont shake the opposing team kids hands, but I went and shook, not slapped hands, all 11 kids hands. (The QB was taken to the hospital during the game.)

We just buy pink ribbon decals for the back of the helmet. At the end of the month we take them off. We dont allow the boys to do anything else.

Friday nights game was a new experience. Talking to the HC before the game said he started the season with 19 kids. Lost 6 to non contact not football related season ending injuries. Found out while waiting for the bus that one kid can't make it. Shows up with 12. Halfway through 2nd quarter QB breaks his collarbone, down to 11. 2 minutes into 2nd half kid goes down with high ankle sprain. The HC sends the ref over and asks to run the clock because he will not forfeit. He said its not fair to our team, and will finish game with 10. I'll tell you what that team competed to the end, never once hung their head, and played with more heart than I have ever seen a team play with.

No. But I have shared stolen, I mean deciphered, signals with another team. They were shared with us and held true, so I waited a quarter to make sure they still held true then shared with another team.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about Long Beach Poly High. It stated that they had 3 counselors dedicated strictly to athletics. All athletes went through those counselors for class schedules every year. These counselors were responsible for making sure the athletes that were going to play their respective sports in college were registered for the Clearing House, had taken SAT/ACT, etc. Also they had profiles for each athlete for when recruiters came to the school. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar set up. We are in the process of trying to get something similar at our school.

Ya...After it was explained to them that the EDD are not a waste of time we ahavent had too many issues, at least on the offensive side of the ball. Defense, glad I don't coach defense, they still don't get it. As referenced by Coach Jenkins part of the issue is many of them are ESL students and a lot of first time players.

Our practice times are regulated by study hall before practice and chow (Military boarding school) after practice. We usually only have 2-2.5 hours to practice. We constantly stress to the boys we cannot afford to have wasted reps or time.
A few weeks ago at practice we completed our OL Indy time and transition to group run period. OL is stinking it up so I ask them why is it that we just spent 10 minutes working reach blocks and combos and we can't translate it to the group run period. I almost had an aneurysm when the STARTING LG said, "I thought we did those drills just to fill time."
The next day during team defense, after spending their Indy time working on driving on a slant route for 10 minutes, the starting corner says the same thing.
I stopped practice and brought both the JV and Varsity together and told them, Everyday drills are not meant to fill/waste time. It is the set of skills that would be the used in that days emphasis during group and team periods. YOU COULD SEE THE LIGHT BULBS TURNING ON IN THEIR HEADS...

One of our kids went to their track camp this summer and was offered a scholarship to stay there. Now kinda wish he had. He ended up being a headache...
Don't know if the article mentioned this but they host one of the largest 7on7 tournaments in the nation. One of kids in my brothers 7on7 group got offered a scholarship after playing in their tournament.

Our practice plans/lay outs don't change. Monday install/ intro and perimeter run and quick passing game. Tuesday inside run and play action. Wednesday pass draw screen 2 min O. Thursday review/walk thru.
Offensively we have Indy, mesh, group, and team periods. We have been using the same layout for at least 20 years now...
