6 months to the date. But that was for a TSA job, not a coaching job... 6 months, wow! I hope I'm not that guy I'm getting worried I was getting worried until i spoke with a buddy about his background check for LAX PD. He said his was 6 months too, and he was ending his career with the Marine Corps and transitioning immediately, so I wouldnt stress too much.

How long have you ever waited for clearance? I'm going on week 9, DOJ is dragging their feet but FBI took a day. My last coaching gig took one day for results to come back. This is ridiculous! Lol 6 months to the date. But that was for a TSA job, not a coaching job...

Ok, I didn't read all of the replies, but why would u have spring ball if school baseball was still going on? Or any spring school sport , track. In my state u can't have spring football till all spring sports are finished, and u must be done by June 1st. If these kids are enrolled in athletics and there is no other spring sport going on, then guess what. Football is the next sport , so time to get after it. Now If these kids have never played and never spoke with u about playing then I don't think u can force them. But if they have , stick to your guns. For us its a matter of the administration and teachers effing up the school year. They wanted the first semester to end prior to Christmas break, so we start school 2nd to last week in August not the day after Labor day, which in turns starts the second semester earlier and school ends earlier. With this logic, last year we had a few of the track guys at the state meet the weekend before finals.

If you have an alumni that are currently in the league or recently retired, have him as the "guest coach". Vikings youth camp with special coach "Joe Smith". We have done this the past three years. Also we team up with the local Pop Warner league. We have a free chalk talk with the coaches in the morning, prior to the camp starting. Philosophy, Q&A about offensive/defensive scheme, conditioning, etc. Then the boys come and we put them through a mini practice. We usually host it right before they start their fall league.

We have a similar policy in place. If you miss Spring ball for any reason other than a Spring sport or injury, you sit the first game of the season. If you miss summer workouts, you sit the first game of the season. If you miss both, you sit first 2 games of the season. A couple seasons ago we had to sit our starting MLB because he missed most of the summer workouts. For those that do come out for the just the fall, they also have to take the conditioning test at the beginning of camp. Because we condition all summer this is how we gauge how in shape the athlete is, and their 'make-up work' as Coachphillip said is based on this test. Luckily for us we are a football school, so the other sports (wrestling, baseball, basketball) off season work outs are scheduled around football.

We played a team in high school who lacked speed to match ours so they let the grass grow for a month. The grass was literally covering the tops of our cleats. Idiots didn't realize it just slowed them down as much.
Is it cheating if coaches around the county send their end zone tapes of our upcoming opponents because the HC is a dick. Is it cheating if other coaches sent the signals they were able to steal from upcoming opponents.

Agree with all points so far. What if everyone on staff is pulling one direction and the HC is going in another. Whose issue would that be? I just think this is an interesting conversation because I'm sure it's true at more places than where we are talking. Everyone else is the problem. Dont like it leave. Your friend can keep making suggestions but once the HC has spoken that is it. Our HC was a defensive guy. But after he lost a few games because of offensive play calling he switched sides of the ball. He vowed he would never lose another game because of someone else calling the plays. His defense never changed and he would do all the scheming but "allow" his DC to "call" the game Friday nights.

Knowledge is important. But wisdom is the ability to apply the knowledge. Don't know who said it but I always liked it. If you know a lot but can't teach it what good does it do...

A high school team mate of mine is a coach at a military prep high school. He had a young man on his team this past season that just quit coming to school and practice one day, completely checked himself out of school. So my buddy calls the kids dad to see whats up. The dad tells him the situation. Right now the kid receives a living allowance of $4,000/month from a trust his grandparents set up for him. When he turns 18 it increases to $10,000/month. No stipulations. WTF...

A kid I knew growing up had a lazy eye. After a game against a league rival a reporter says, "We can tell it was a tough game by looking at your face. How does your eye feel?" He responds, "I was born like this." That was a very short post game interview.

One of the coolest experiences I had was coaching against Servite of Anaheim (Catholic school). Before the game the chaplain led the crowd in the Lord's Prayer, and at the end witnessing about 2000 people end the prayer with the sign of the cross.

We have 14 coaches on Varsity staff. With the exception of the HC/OC, DC, AHC, most coach both Varsity and JV. The Varsity Slots coach is the Frosh HC/OC and one of our LB coaches is the Frosh DC. Varsity DL coach is JV DC and Varsity TE coach is Assistant OC/JV OC. Varsity is opposite side of ball from JV/Frosh. The only thing the Varsity and JV does together is Conditioning.
We also play back to back JV & Varsity. Most teams in our area the JV runs a watered down version of the Varsity scheme, so it helps to be able to tell the HC, hey heres something they did that we havent seen on film or they tweaked this or that, etc.

We got a new WR coach, a real fire-n-brimstone guy, new to coaching, fresh off his career as a D-3 backup guy. Full of piss and vinegar, but not much else. Our last string receiver was an IB kid, higher IQ than body weight, kinda the team hero/Rudy kid. In 1-on-1 receiver drills, the smart kid kept running some bizarre route. All the kids were giggling, even the DB covering him. The coach was LIVID, couldn't figure out what the kid was running. This went on for days, until finally the coach lost it, red-faced, screaming "WHAT THE F KIND OF ROUTE IS THAT......BS...WASTE OF TIME..." etc. The receiver calmly looks at him, says "its a dick!" He had been running a penis-route, complete with balls, and had been getting critiqued for over a week. I thought the coach was gonna hit him, but I was laughing too hard to do anything about it I just spit my water all over the computer screen...HAHAHA...Thanks for sharing...

All of our gear has a number on it. As the boys check out their gear we record the number on a spreadsheet with the athletes name and info on it, grade, phone number, student ID, ETC. At the end of the season the boys put their gear in their travel bag and drop it off at the equipment office. As the equipment guy opens a bag he inventories the gear. If an athlete turns all his gear in the spreadsheet is erased/cleared, if he doesnt turn all his gear in an invoice gets sent to the front office for billing. The equipment guy separates it all for reconditioning as he checks gear back in.

At my alma mater they awarded Frosh letters. All members of the team received a letter if you purchased an ASB card, if you didnt purchase an ASB card you could/had to purchase a letter if you wanted one. I personally thought that was a stupid policy.
As for the article let him keep the jacket.

We have 13 coaches on the Varsity staff. HC, 2 OL/TE (interior & OT/TE), 2 DL, 3 LB (inside & outside, 1 is the DC), 2 receiver (wideout & slots), RB, 2 DB (corners & safeties). With the exception of the Slots coach (Frosh HC), the Varsity DC, the Varsity HC, The head Oline coach, everyone coaches JV as well. With the exception of the Varsity slots coach the Frosh has their own staff.

I have a few questions for you all tho. If you could say there is one strength or one ability that greatly helps you or makes you a great coach what is it? LOVE. The love of the game. Without sounding like Sandusky...the love you have and show for/to your players. I coached at a school for a year where my love of coaching was tested. The lack of offensive production was blamed on me, never mind the fact that we trying to run power/counter vs 9 man box, because I was the OL coach and the second youngest on the offensive staff (25 years old). I had more years varsity coaching experience than the rest of the offensive staff combined with exception of the OC. I was told my style of coaching wasnt good because I didnt yell and berate the players. I was also the JV OC. We werent a team with a lot of talent because all the sophomores that could play were on Varsity. But what we did do was have fun at practice and tried to put our rag tag bunch in the best position to have some kind of success even though it wasnt showing in the W/L columns. I had varsity guys asking to come down to JV just because we just played and didnt care. The JV team just LOVED playing. Needless to say I left after that one season. Had to swallow my pride and ask my HC if i could have any job just to be back at my alma mater. We talked about why I was leaving my previous post and I explained to him about me losing my passion for the sport. I regained my love of coaching and looking to pass that along to maybe a few future coaches. I became interested in coaching because of my high school coaches. The passion they showed. The genuine interest they showed in our team and our well being as individuals. They showed that they cared more about showing us how to be upstanding young men then wins and losses. They cared about making sure we would succeed in life.

Have been able to coach at my alma mater with my HS head coach (just retired after 26 years) for 11 seasons. Worked my way from assistant position coach to assistant OC/run game coordinator. We have been a great program. Multiple state final appearances with multiple state titles. Have seen many of our athletes go on to the next level via different routes.
HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH TURNING TROUBLED YOUNG MENS LIVES AROUND WITH THIS BLESSING WE CALL FOOTBALL AND KEEPING MANY OTHER OUT OF TROUBLE.
With the coaching change this off season I left my alma mater and was hired at a local military prep academy as the OC. This new program will definitely test my coaching abilities and love of the sport.

If our JV game is a Thursday instead of Friday most of the JV staff wears a pair of shorts we would wear to practice. I wonder how many teams have had this thought run through their minds about us then get their butts handed to them... I wonder how many times I have read someone respond to this "joke" and Ive thought that they take themselves way too seriously. Im lucky to have sleeves on at a JV game. Or even shoes for that matter. Some of yall really need to relax. Ya. I posted before reading all the comments especially the one you said it was a joke...Just didn't feel like going back and deleting comment...

Let me ask this, am I in bad taste wearing a hat backwards? I just feel like with a headset on it is more comfortable and I do not have the bill in my eyesight. Thoughts? Then why wear a hat at all? Most times at practice I wear a standard coaching straw hat. I usually have my head bic'd. I only wear a ball cap at practice to protect my head. But i like having the sun on my face so i wear it backwards. Thats just me though.

My first year coaching the offensive coordinator I worked for said that if the other teams coaches are wearing shorts then it is sure fire way to know that you can scheme them up. I've lived by that ever since. If our JV game is a Thursday instead of Friday most of the JV staff wears a pair of shorts we would wear to practice. I wonder how many teams have had this thought run through their minds about us then get their butts handed to them...
