Our National Guard and a local Marine House have been outstanding for military appreciation...we have had a former player represent each branch of the service and bring out that branches flag accompanied by a brief description of that branch. Takes about 10 minutes and then our kids shake hands with the service members as we enter the locker room pre-game. Youth night is awesome- all 3-6 graders get in free i accompanied by a parent. We do a pre-game burger feed and tailgating and then the kids line the sideline as we enter for the National Anthem. At a previous stop when we did military appreciation night, we "adopted" a unit on our local Marine Corps base. We were their unit logo as a decal on the back of our helmet.

The only reason we use one is because a parent bought it for the schoo before we took over the program.

After Friday nights, I help with my son's 11-12 youth team on Saturdays. A kid for the other team twisted his ankle and his coaches were tending to him so refs sent players to sidelines for water. I was talking to one of our players.... ref came over and said coach they have to take a knee and you cant coach during an injury. I looked confused and asked if that was really a rule? he said yes its a rule in the rule book. I laughed and turned to talk to the kid again. He threatened to flag me if I didn't stop. I hate the whole take a knee crap anyway. that guy is gonna feel the same whether i'm on knee or standing. We got yelled at by our parents in the stands last year (HS Varsity) because an opposing player got hurt and we didn't take a knee. She approached the HC and demanded that we take a knee when i kid gets hurt. We told her this aint peewee football and we don't take a knee. She flipped out. To make it worse they talked to the president of our school and he had to "address the issue" with the coaching staff.

Our AD comes to the field everyday. Doesn't address the team unless there is something coming down from admin of the school. We host a team dinner Thursday after practice that he usually attends. President/General of the school (military boarding school) comes over once every couple of weeks but is at almost every game including away games. General addresses kids couple of times a season.

THE GAME IS CHANGING...(not necessarily for the better) At Army and Navy Academy (HS I coach at) we as a staff are trying to change the culture of the program. For many years the Academy has been a door mat for it's league and division in playoffs. The change in culture begins with a change in attitude and style of play. Teams we faced our first 2 seasons got the usual soft, scared of contact, undisciplined cadets. This year is different. Our boys are starting to figure it out. We preach to our athletes to play hard, hit harder, but to do it within the rules of the game. We coach, and more importantly teach our young men to play, with integrity. These are the basic pillars of our program philosophy. We are trying to teach our boys how to play the game safely. We teach tackling fundamentals that keep the head out of the tackle. We teach our defenders to target the ball carriers legs. Aiming point is the thigh pads of the near leg with your near shoulder. We teach to drive through the tackle. This is the way we were taught at Oceanside, and this is the way we teach our athletes. Anyone who has played against one of Coach Carroll's (local legend, my HS coach and mentor) teams can attest, you more than likely would be sore after the game. We teach our athletes to hit your ball carrier so hard that they don't want to handle the rock anymore. After a recent game the opposing Head Coaches exchanged post game pleasantries. Their HC called our boys out for playing maliciously and HITTING HIS PLAYERS TOO HARD. Since when in our game did it become OK to say you hit my players too hard. The game is under enough scrutiny and is being attacked from the outside plenty enough that we don't need to destroy it from within as well. If the hits to your ball carriers were late or illegal then you would have an argument. But the hits were legal and for you to come at it from the standpoint of we hit you too hard is unacceptable. Sorry for the long post but I need to stand up for my players. I'm guessing you won? Coaches are never rational after a game.....grain of salt it and move on You would think, but no we lost 21-14. The opposition has beaten us pretty soundly the first 2 years we have been with this program.

I have seen 3 assistants do it at my last school. 2 stopped coaching, 1 left to another school but kept teaching at our school... I'd suggest that you look at your program to see if there's something that drives them out. It's not the program, it was the individuals. Our program set the standard in our section and 2 of these guys just wanted it on the resume that they coached there. Thought it would help them get a Head coaching position somewhere. They both showed a lack of motivation. The other guy just gave up coaching period once he got tenure.

The other thing to consider is the headache HC's have in putting together a staff. In California you're very lucky if you have one loyal assistant who is an on campus teacher as well. As a HC you want to hire good assistants. But then a good assistant is available and he says "I just need a (teaching) job." So let's say you get him in as a teacher while you want him to be a top notch assistant. He in turn works for a couple years, gets tenured, and is then done. So in other words, he used you. This happens quite often. I'm not saying that this doesn't happen but that's amazing. So, you hire a guy and he strings you along, doing an exemplary job as a coach and in the classroom, for three years but it was all part of a plan? And that happens a lot? I have seen 3 assistants do it at my last school. 2 stopped coaching, 1 left to another school but kept teaching at our school...

I know this belongs in the equipment section but I'm hoping it can be left here for a bit so it can get more views and discussion. Do matte helmets require a different type of decal material? We changed our helmets colours to a gunmetal grey look and are sourcing new helmet decals. The samples we got from our supplier are too reflective where you can see the excess material through the blanks areas in the design. No. We changed our helmets last season to matte black with a high gloss Vegas gold Trojan decal. The high gloss decals are a beautiful thing in a matte helmet.

Our FB requirements are school colors. Black, Vegas gold, white or grey. Being at a private military school the rules are easily enforced. The school PT dress code is black on black on black on black.

Scenario 1:
20 plays for first team O and D. 15 plays second teams. 7 plays for anyone who hasn't gotten in.
Scenario 2:
Play it like a live half of football with a few adjustments. No live KO or KOR. KO team kicks and runs down to cover, returners field the ball. If KO is a touchback it is a touchback. If KO goes past 20 play it as a touchback. If KO doesn't go past 20 play it where it is fielded. Punts are played the same way. No live rush for PAT/FG. Everything thing else is live. Quick whistles on sacks. QB was not live (put a scrimmage vest or helmet cap on QB) unless offense runs their QB. At the end of half each team runs a 2 minute o period from the -40. Halftime. Then each offense got 10-15 plays to work situations they didn't get to work during live period. Last period was 10-15 plays for guys who didn't get in on the live action.

Tomorrow. I absolutely despise what Signing Day has become, as well as the changes in recruiting that it represents. I can't stand the D1Bound mentality. I have had a few kids the last couple years pass on a D2, D3, NAIA opportunities because it wasn't D1. They go to a Juco and either end their career there or end up somewhere besides a D1 anyway...

coachtua You guys must either have multiple coaches on campus whose prep period is during football class or a bunch of off campus coaches willing to put in time. Either way, that sounds like a very well organized plan. As for the OP, I agree with those who say let the kids be kids. And Inalonagree with the poster who said we are asking more from our kids than some colleges. In So Cal, football is year round and coaches are having shorter and shorter careers due to burnout and lack of fair compensation. BOTH...Most of the on campus coaches had a 6th period prep. This reduced the need for subs when the Frosh and JV games were earlier than normal. The off campus coaches came when they could.

Do you guys white board stuff with players and teach scheme? If so, how many days a week? month? What are you teaching? Do you have a football PE class. At my last stop we did. Monday - skill players on the field offensive emphasis. Plyo, ladders, cuts, routes, plays. Bigs weights. After school skills weights, OL punching work. Tuesday the OL was on the field doing position specific drills, ladders, sleds, cone work, plyo work and a little bit of scheme reminder stuff. Skills weights. Bigs lift after school. Wednesday - skill players on the field defensive emphasis. Speed work, form running, plyos, defensive skill work. Bigs weights. After school skills weights, OL different punching drills. Thursday - DL emphasis. Skills weights. Bigs lift after school. Friday skills competition day...7 on 7. Bigs weights. Weightroom closed after school.

There is one old man who filmed our varsity games that anytime I get a text from him with a picture attached I just delete it without opening it. I know it's going to be a naked or a half naked chick. If parents got ahold of one or the coaches phones where I'm at now the whole staff would be fired the amount of 💩 we talk to each other, the borderline jokes that we all find funny but others might not. Especially in the incredibly uptight culture that you're living in. Been there, done that. Glad to be home in Michigan. ? UPTIGHT CULTURE?...

Athletic department picks up the tab for Glazier season pass, travel, and hotel room if needed plus $50 for meals. They say it is professional development and written in to the annual budget. Teachers are given a sub and paid day without it counting against their paid time off.
