I'm in the brainstorming process for next year. I'd like to host a military appreciation night & (or) a cancer awareness night at our home games next fall. Does anyone have different ideas or cool suggestions as to some things they do for each of these nights, or maybe other themes they've done or recognized in the past? A few years ago we invited back some reunion teams, and even though it was a lot of work trying to track down former players, it was a lot of fun being able to reminisce afterwards at the watering hole.

We did a "Compass Night"...finish school in order to find your direction in life.
The student body participation was stunning! I was surprised.

I've heard of "Community Heroes Night"- police, fire, emt, doctors, etc. Its a good group to have attached to your program as well.

Our National Guard and a local Marine House have been outstanding for military appreciation...we have had a former player represent each branch of the service and bring out that branches flag accompanied by a brief description of that branch. Takes about 10 minutes and then our kids shake hands with the service members as we enter the locker room pre-game.
Youth night is awesome- all 3-6 graders get in free i accompanied by a parent. We do a pre-game burger feed and tailgating and then the kids line the sideline as we enter for the National Anthem.

Did you do anything special in recognition of them, or just announce them and have them recognized? I also like the teacher appreciation night, though i'm not quite sure of how we would coordinate that, as we have 3 schools that make up our co-op. We have our local youth team (5th & 6th grades) play at halftime of at least one, sometimes two of our home games. The kids love being under the Friday night lights.

Oh it wasn't me or my school, just one I heard of. From what I gleaned they invited them out onto the field during the half and recognized them; they actually did stuff during the school day too but I don't know all of it. I think its a good thing though.

We do teacher appreciation night. Every senior gives a plaque to a teacher of their choice. Doesn't have to be high school level. One year we had a kid give it to his elementary school principal of a school that closed and she retired early. It was a cool moment.
We also do a local heroes night. They get in free, and get recognized on field at halftime.
We've also done decade teams on certain nights.

At a previous stop when we did military appreciation night, we "adopted" a unit on our local Marine Corps base. We were their unit logo as a decal on the back of our helmet.

Themes that we used this year:
Future Falcons Night (Youth Football teams were recognized. Kids got in free with their jersey) Teacher Appreciation Night Father/Son Night Military Appreciation Night Live Pink Cancer Awareness Night
All of these were pretty successful for us and the turnout was great.

What did you guys do for father/son night? Did you let them in free, give them something, have a pregame cookout, etc....??

Teacher appreciation is great because it tends to get the whole faculty on board, including the foot draggers.
When I was at a private school we did Middle School Football nigh. Between the JV & Varsity game we introduced the middle school kids. What seemed like something that would be ho-hum turned into a big deal. It got kids and, more importantly, their parents excited about the program and greased the skids to get them into the high school program.

We do a Military Appreciation Night and have our local army recruiter come and flip the coin before the game.
We also do a Teacher Appreciation Night and each player picks a staff member to give his jersey to and invite to the game. We announce each teacher before the game.

We had the fathers wear the away game jersey of their son, or football gear if the jersey didn't fit. The father's met the players at our locker room and walked to the field side by side with their son. We recognized and thanked all of the father's for all that they do as parents. The fathers were allowed in the game for free. I like the idea of a pregame cookout and we might steal that for next season. This was the first time that we did the father/son night. We also do a mother/son brunch during our bye week. That turnout was pretty good as well.

They do a cancer awareness night here. They sell shirts and the profits go to cancer research. The team wears pink socks and the coaches use to wear pink shirts.
They also do a youth football night, where the top 2 teams in the leagues play a exhibition game at halftime. The crowd loves it, and its usually on a night the varsity is blowing a team out, so they are entertained. The kids love playing on the high school field with a huge crowd.
They do a military appreciation night, they use to have a group sky dive in with the gameball, but haven't for a few years.
