We have the backups run the following during Special Teams: Ladder & step-over footwork drills Simple blocking drills Simple tackling drills Simple catching drills Emphasis on technique and development of fundamental skills. THIS...During our early out period, we work our individual kicking skills, returners catching, QB and center exchanges and QB warming up his arm by throwing bubble screens, key screens etc. Defense going over blitz and line stunts, formation recognition. Any kids not involved do an agility circuit Monday, Tuesday tackle circuit, and turnover circuit Wednesday.

On a Facebook page for local coaches, someone brought up how the local D1 university would be so much better if they didn't let some of the local talent get away. Nothing malicious, just looking to start a conversation about what could be done to keep the local talent at home. Someone screenshot that post and texted it to the HC at the university.

All season we have been giving navyguy a hard time. When we go out for drinks after a game we tell the waitress he and his "fiance" are expecting a baby soon. He gets pissed everytime. At the end of the year banquet the OL coach gets up to speak and present his group of kids their letters. He starts off thank you parents blah blah blah. Also I am speaking for the entire coaching staff. Please join us in congratulating Coach J on the upcoming birth of his child. The whole coaching staff about fall out of our chairs we are laughing so hard, the boys erupt in laughter because they know it's a joke, the parents give him a huge congratulatory round of applause. Then comes the words we had come to hear so often this list season...I hate you MFers...Best part, he had given his group their letters and couldn't say anything over the PA system. So he had to explain to each parent it was an inside joke...

I know a few of the coaches on staff personally. At UVA they are not allowed to even recruit an athlete until they pass or get accepted by admissions. They have said the admissions at UVA are more stringent academically then BYU.

Unfortunately, many times you can't discover the reason until after you are waist deep in it. [/quote]
This is it. We just completed our second season at our current school. Previous staff was 2-8, 1-9. Last season went 7-4, exited the playoffs in the first round. We thought that's OK. We figured it was just the kids were still learning how to win and the nuances of our systems offensively and defensively. This year we went 2-8 and discovered a lot about the school and the boys at it. Little to no support from the school staff and admin. Active hating by teachers and counselors because they can't control the kids on the campus side but we have no problems with the same kids. Admin scheduling meetings and mandatory stuff during practice hours. Kids that have never been told no, and think they can do what they want without consequence because they get away with it are home. Lack of toughness throughout the team. Lack of general football knowledge.

Our HC and one of their assistants were college teammates and talk regularly. Their coach said they tried at the end of last season to change leagues and their league they were trying to leave denied it.

Our back up QB threw his helmet on the sideline during a game, we made him dress and not play on the JV then not even dress for the Varsity game the following week. During practice all he did was roll the length of the field and back, sundials after each roll, and a gasser in between each roll. Same thing for our starting QB when he got ejected for throwing a punch. His game punishment was he was suspended for 2 games and not allowed to even wear a uniform or be on the sideline. He had to sit in the press box and chart for the spotter. Any other unsportsmanlike is usually just 200 yards of up downs every 5 yards.

I had a teammate in college that bought 2 sets of thigh pads, pulled the hard plastic out of middle, used one set for his "thigh pads" then cut down the other set to about a 4" diameter circle as his "knee pads". Every game the refs would check him but technically he has his "pads" in...

As I sit here as the HC/OC, I'm trying to think of how many times I've had a 200 yard rusher and finished with a loss like what happened yesterday. My fullback went for 205 on 25 carries and two slots combined for 130 on 10 carries. We punted once, when we were called for a 15 yard penalty on a perfectly executed scramble for a 15 yard penalty. Swish cheese defense kept our offense off the field and we lost 40-20. Mind boggled. Do you coach with me? Almost exact stats for my RB. But we were shut out. 9 possessions, 7 ended in turnovers.

At my last stop we had boys and parents sign a contract. If you did not successfully complete spring or summer it was a 1 game non dress per offense in the fall. If you missed/didn't complete both, it was a 3 game no dress. If you didn't do spring fundraiser you didn't play in spring game which equals an incomplete spring. The only acceptable excuse for missing spring was spring sports playoffs. I believe the summer was you couldn't miss more than 3 days for the 6 week summer program.

One of my coaches just had his second cancer removed from his face. First was from his ear. The latest removal was not fun, an all day event where they would numb, cut, go to waiting room, get results, numb, cut, go to waiting room. Did 3 cycles of that. Went in at 8, was finally done at 630. Think they got it all but he says that wearing a ball cap to practice is no longer an option for him and he is going to become the most reformed coach around, seen the light so to speak. Said that his dermatologist loves to see the coaches come in with all their issues because they could all be prevented with a wider hat and sunscreen. I am looking big time at the floppy and/or wide brim hats for the coaches and buying sun screen for everyone. Problem is trying to find sun preventive team gear. Almost there. If I find what works we might be looking like the state road crew guys (at least in our area in CA, they are in hats, neck covers, long sleeve everything, all in day glow yellow). On game nights its the team ballcap. We get some rain during the late season, CA drought and all, but thats about it. Just buy some of those straw hats and ask your embroidery guy to make a few patches with of your logo and sort glue to the front of the hat.

At a military boarding school and our boys are playing like garbage, turnovers, missed tackles, allowing receivers to catch the ball. Our HC walks in the locker room at half time and says, "No wonder you guys came to an all boys boarding school. You would rather play with each other than play football."

Not so much what he said but what he did.
We got beat by our rival pretty bad one year on homecoming. Saturday morning HC gets up and goes over the usual: injury report, what happened in our league the night before, etc. He was pissed about the game and dint want to watch the tape and relive the horror from the night before. So he brings a blank tape into the meeting room and tells the boys, "We are not going to watch this tape, this is what I am going to do." He proceeds to try and pull the tape apart but grabs the end that was short. So he only pulled like an inch of tape and couldnt pull anymore and struggled for like 30 seconds, gave up and threw the video cassette against the wall. After the boys were dismissed we clowned him for the rest of the day.

Coaches, I've taken over as the head coach at a boarding school. I've served as the OC for the last three years, so Im familar with the school climate. I'd like to start a discussion on the challanges you've faced, how you've over come them, etc. For starters, we are a military school. That provides challanges in itself. Second, our state (MO) allows 25 contact days during the summer. I have 0 because my players are all over the world (literally, Mexico, China to name a few). This year we start fall practice on 8/1. School starts 8/22. Our first game is 8/19. Several kids wont show up till 8/21, despite me telling them if they come out 8/22, they'll miss half the season (first game, plus 14 practices per state rules). What are some things you've done to combat these issues? What are some other problems you've had? We send the itinerary to parents. All athletes that were at the school this past year are expected to report the opening day of camp. You are in a better situation than us. Camp can begin on 1 Aug. Admin wont let us on campus until 10 Aug. They didnt want us back until 17 Aug with our first game on 26 Aug. We are looking into getting onto a military to hold the first week of camp there. Mostly conditioning and team building exercises. It helps that we are a military boarding school.

you guys don't wanna see me throw with a Voit CB2 thats the official game ball of my PE class, "I was first team all state, i can make it rain out here" We had a team try and use one against us last year. During warm ups one of their "kicking" balls made it to our side of the field. So we alerted the refs to it prior to the game. Lining up for the opening kickoff they hand the ball to the ref and he sends them back to the sideline. Their HC wasnt too happy with that.

We had heard that CIF was dropping Rawlings as the official ball sponsor. Any new news? We are getting ready to place our order for next season and do not want to purchase footballs that we will not be able to use. Or is this a section by section deal? Section by section deal We were Rawlings Ncs switched to Wilson a year or two ago OK thanks...Wasn't sure if it was by section. SDS has been using Rawlings for playoffs. Rumor has it we were switching to Wilson this season. But our CIF offices aren't returning phone calls.

One of our former players came up with an idea for a fundraiser. He said to play and alumni flag game maybe before one of our scrimmages. This sounds like it might be a good idea. Does anybody have any experience with this? We have done it before. We treated it as a Spring alumni weekend. Friday evening was the end of Spring football game/fund raiser dinner $10 (Outback Catered- chicken sandwiches and hamburgers). Saturday morning was the Alumni game $10/person. Saturday evening was the Football Reunion banquet $25/person (Outback catered - pork chops or chicken, mashed potatoes, caesar salad, dinner rolls), after the dinner was the social part ("catered" by a local bar/brewery - included with your purchase of dinner ticket or $10/person).
