I stole this from the board...
"Speed kills, strength punishes"
We have really been pushing the off season conditioning. Added 2 new strength coaches and one does a wicked metabolic program that really has helped.

We have low numbers so we have grads come back to give us a look. They may or may not gear up, it is fun for them and we don't let them smack anyone so it's not going to turn into a legal issue.

I worked with a guy who came back with answers like "they wont do that" or "the kids will figure it out" when asked about our defensive adjustments to certain sets.
He was very laissez-faire and did not seem to have a total package plan.
We got our butts kicked in the playoffs because we could not adjust.
Of course now he is "coaching" in the pros. WTF!?!

Hey guys,
There are not a lot of quality football camps in my area. Especially for specific positions.
We have one really good full gear camp, 1 QB camp, and one QB / WR camp.
I was thinking about putting some on. A lineman camp (O and D). A 7's camp (not linemen).
Any tips?
Also, if you run camps do you charge your own players to go?

Come on 44dl don't be a smart aleck.
Anyways. Some of these stories remind me of my own. I was with a new team as the DC and I had a crazy DLine coach who was leftover from the previous staff. Very difficult guy to get along with. Anyways, he just does not show up for 2 weeks. So I had to coach the DL. Then it's gameday of a big game and there he is! I just ignored him and kept on coaching thinking maybe he was just there to watch and we would find out later what was going on. Well he is talking to the players and then gets in my face that he is upset that I changed some things with the Dline. He was really rude and hostile and eventually threatened to kill me, this was right infront of his wife and his kid!!! Never did see the guy again. What a nut job.
A funny story to balance that was from 2 years ago. I was running the scout O and we ran a screen play and then this Dlineman made this great open field tackle on the back. Problem was that he was actually a scout team oline man!!! But he was so used to D it was just instinct. Funniest thing ever as we were all celebrating till the OLine coach came over and told us all that happend. The kid went from feeling great to having this stunned look on his face once he realized what he did. The whole team was in stitches...

Had an HC try to get it across to us once but he butchered it all up and we all left going WTF was that!??! I think it's a good idea but I never really liked the model. Teach what you know and believe...

I like stories like this
If that does not inspire kids to get over whatever they are complaining about and using as excuses I don't know what will. They need to learn to appreciate the health they have and not take it for granted and to use their time well to be the best they can be. Because kid's like this in the video WISH they could trade places with them and have the opportunities they have!!!

SPEED KILLS!
If you are helping your kids get faster it is worth it. Really it's about the effectiveness of your sprint training. IF you can still do it as the HC of the football program and it's paying off with faster players than it IS helping your program without a doubt. But you do have to weight it against what it could be taking you and your kids away from that is football specific. We are training our kids but also encouraging them to go to track, but we have track coaches and we are staying with our FB kids and incorporating the guys doing track when they come to us...

Yeah I agree it's a rare QB that can be ready to play his rookie year. I don't think any of this year's drafts QBs are ready to lay fulltime. I think Tebow will be good as a change up to run some wildcat or smashmouth football. I would sub in Tebow for the QB Sneak on the goalline rather than expect / risk my starter.

I would sit down and talk with those seniors and let them know what you are thinking. Outline your expectations and ask if they are willing to meet them. If they admit they will not they let them know that they can't be starters then (or likely won't if someone is better suited for it). Tell them you are doing this because it's the right way to win. "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." Give them the chance to hear you and talk to you before you pull them. To me communication is key. It's also a good CYA. We even have them sign what they are committing to do. Then if they don't meet it you can use that when those parents show up and the kids will almost always admit they have not been living up to the own standards THEY SET with you.
That said, you might need to use some of them to get wins this year. Success breeds success. Or you go with the younger guys and they will be better for it over the next few years. But I really doubt you will win very much if you pull all those seniors. You have to give them a chance, convert a few, and run off a few...

Back in the day a Pearl of Wisdom we picked up that we still use came from Bruce Rollinson of Mater Dei (Cali) who said they do everything by the minute.
So practice stars at 331, not 330 ish. The emphasis is on being exact. Not close enough, but a very specific expectation.

Wow several good points.
1) True about the tailback, should he be going both ways if he is your money man on O? 2) Try to have O.Line only be O.Line, but often that's not realistic. We try to rotate guys so they are not Iron Men, more like 1.5ers.
QB on D? 1) As long as he is not the only guy that can really play QB unless 2) We REALLY need him on D
I know for some QBs playing on D allows them to use more of their aggressive side that QB does not allow. The kid we have now is a STUD at Free Safety. He is a ball hawk. And if the throws a pick he always seems to come back with the ball a few plays later. Injuries is a worry for sure. But also, at the next level, he is much more likely to be a DB or WR.
The other problem with having the QB on D is that you don't get to talk to him between series. Same problem with O.Line playing both ways. But if you have low numbers you have to do it sometimes...

Hi Huey and company,
I was just wondering if it was possible to have a NO HUDDLE section under offense as it is a big topic.
Any others think that would be helpful? I have done searches before but it does not take short words like NO so it just searches for huddle, which as you can imagine shows up quite a bit!

Not having 7's is not as concerning to me to not wanting to have an off-season conditioning program.
How long has the HC been there? How did you do last year? Will you as a staff be on the hot seat if you don't win this year?
To me 7's does help you win. So if you are cutting these corners I doubt you will be the best you can and win many games, thus, get ready to look for a new job.
And yeah I agree with other posters here that you do not want to above your HC. You are his assistant. If you don't like it, talk to him, quit, do what he allows / wants, or just follow his lead and don't bother.
But yeah you never want to get the rep as someone who will take issues outside of the program. Even though you may be right, "make your boss right"...for as long as he is your boss.

The only one I could see is running for 4 yds. This is hoping the NFL playes on my team do the job and I have a clear path for 4 yds before I get knocked out.

I never thought of this as conventional wisdom. I was shocked by the play call. I thought they should have kicked the field goal. Imagine if they did that and stopped them like they did and kicked ANOTHER field goal, so yes they may have lost 3 points.
But in hindsight I do so how the call makes sense. It was a good calculated risk that paid off with no real loss.

Bold?? hmmm...
Bold would be picking the Saints. It would be great to see them win, that area deserves it. But realistically, this is the Colts year (again).
Bold would be saying Peyton Manning will be knocked out of the game by the 2nd Q and then the Saints roll the Colts. That could happen.
I just don't see Cinderella getting her wish. The Saints barely beat the Fumblingbumbling Vikings last week. The Colts are a much better team.
And no matter what, Peyton Manning will go down as the best QB ever!!!

Part of this debate has to take into account the players ability. It might be a great playcall for the NFL or NCAA, but can teenagers or kids execute it? Do they have the skillset or ability? Have you practiced it enough?
Maybe a Fly pass is a great call because they have 9 in the box but if you have not put the time into it to make sure the kids CAN execute it then even though strategically it's a great call from the practical sense it's horrible.
Practice makes practical.

Depends on your goals.
Postive yards, first down, touchdowns....
Execution as play was designed = success from coaching point of view.
QB scrambling for a 1st down = athletic success
Great run play with fumble at end = sucess thwarted by human error (but correct that problem and use the play again).
