Our head coach/offensive coordinator is refusing to attend 7 on 7 again this year. He did the same thing last year. This led to the kids not taking 7 on 7 seriously. One time, we ended up with 9 total kids attending, and 4 were centers! Needless to say, us young assistants who are trying to make a name for ourselves were seen as a bunch of idiots.
To complicate things more, we have decided to 2 platoon this year. So far we have no offensive coaches planning to attend. Our HC's solution to this problem is, "one of you defensive guys can call plays." I could understand this if we were an established staff, but we aren't. Also, the HC/OC is planning on changing our terminology to simplify things, so none of us defensive guys can call plays. Should I confront the HC/OC on this? Or should I just ignore it and coach the hell out of my defensive guys? It just seems like if I let this go, we will all be wasting our time.

The first question that comes to my mind is this: The HC obviously doesn't value 7 on 7, so why is your program going? If the HC doesn't value the 7 on 7 and take it seriously, the players aren't going to either and there's very little you and the rest of the assistants can do about it IMHO.

That is unbelievable. What is his reason for not wanting to do 7 on 7? Even if he is not a fan of the passing game, your defense still has to defend it. Does he also not want the kids in a speed and power program?

Basically, he wants to do it so we can practice. In our state, we can take the kids on the field and do pretty much whatever we want without wearing equipment, if we participate in a 7 on 7 league. I just can't understand being the HC/OC and not wanting to evaluate my kids playing against other schools. Do I bite my tongue and go along with this since he is the head coach, or should I relay to him that it is a waste of time for us to attend the 7 on 7 games?

If your staying on board Id say dont go to 7v7. You will look foolish and like you said you dont get the right kids showing. Secondly I would look for another job where it is an actual program.

we have decided thios yr to do less 7 on 7's as well. reasoning we can get more from our upper padded summer team camps than 7 on 7's. by our state rules, we will have at least 4 this summer.

I agree with wolverine55. I wonder though, who scheduled the 7 on 7's? Did the HC and or OC? If so, why?

Now, I have a follow up question here, but it is off the stated topic. Would it be "wrong" to bring these actions to the attention of the School Board. Sure..that is pretty much driving a knife in the back of the header...BUT if it is really "about the kids"... shouldn't that come up?

all i can say is
i wouldn't do it
those people hired the guy-let them keep em
i wouldn't work there for the hc or those that hired him
but throwing the hc under the bus is something i would never do
just move on---keep your integrity

tog--I totally understand that point of view..but again..what about the kids. I guess my viewpoint is somewhat shaped by the fact that I really didn't have quality coaching for most of my high school career. Probably one of the reasons I ended up going into it.

as one that is all about the kids
i can say this
they will learn the lessons available
as professionals though
at least here in this state---if you lose your integrity in the loyalty dept---you have lost all
i will not work for an hc such as this---nor would i work for an admin that would hire/keep/support such
but
i would not sell them out---i would just move on

No matter what the reason unless life threatening... never put the header under the bus... It'll be like committing Japanese ritual suicide to your career

If the HC doesn't want to go to 7-on-7, then there should be NO 7-on-7. It's just that simple.
The only "decision" here is whether or not you remain coaching for this guy. Otherwise, there's no argument. He's the head man, and that's that.

If the situation becomes untenable for you, as tog said, you move on without burning any bridges.

I can not emphasize enough what previous Coaches have stated about loyalty being paramount. Having Coached in HS as well as a little time working in the pros, there is nothing more valuable than this. Disloyal is the ultimate blackmark in our sport (in my HUMBLE and Honest opinion.) I would be polishing my resume as well as shopping it, though it may be difficult to relocate by this time of the year. Remeber, as much as we teach kids about facing adversity head on, this is your opportunity. You can still set an example for these young men, albeit a difficult one to do. I would say, if you have to ride this one more year, focus on them. Make sure they understand that you care and do everything you can for them without overreaching. Never undercut the head coach, never speak ill of the head coach, and don't take anything to the school board over him.
If it really is something that your whole staff feels strongly about, the only option I would consider viable is to all meet privately with him behind a closed door and discuss it. He still has the right to tell you that it is HIS program and if you don't like it, move on. Still in the interest of leaving no stone unturned I would at least look at this.

Not starting a new debate here, just stating a fact: There are coaches who don't think 7-on-7s are of the value that others do.

I am sorry, read board daily, but rarely post. As a head coach, I would immediately terminate any assistant who aired "program questions" to the public internet community. I don't even have to talk about if an assistant went to the school board. If you do not like the way your program is being run, 2 things 1. Get your own program to run, or 2. move along to another program. That being said, I am not copmpletely sure we are getting all the info here.

"fire for airing program stuff"?
Come on man..its not like its the local press. Its an internet message board designed to give FEEDBACK and advice on things, thats why its annoymus.
I know 3 or 4 posters here, I consider them friends. Sometimes I post real questions. Sometimes I post hypothetical questions that are on my mind.
Am I happy about how my athletic department is ran? Not all the time. Do I have issues with it? Sometimes. Do I come here to vent? Yes.
I understand your point about going to the school board. That one I agree with you on. But Venting on the web...come on man, thats why the internet was invented...well that ,music downloads and porn.

To build on blb's question, that's kind of what I was thinking when I posted earlier about why is the program going. I do not think 7 on 7s are that valuable, but there are plenty of coaches who do. If you're going to do them, the HC has to be on board so the players feel they are important.

Why does the head coach not want the team, attending? And why are you not willing to follow his lead? Often as a HC, the decsion making process involves bigger picture issues. And often the best way for you to understand is to sit down with him and ask. Perhaps, once you get his reasoning, you can decide whether to be his assistant or not. But certainly taking part of the team anywhere, against the decision of the leader of the program, reeks of assistants wishing to usurp the HC. And a team with split leadership will often not play as one in the fall.

I wouldn't work for the guy! He really shouldn't be a HC if he schedules 7-on-7 and doesn't attend.

Not having 7's is not as concerning to me to not wanting to have an off-season conditioning program.
How long has the HC been there? How did you do last year? Will you as a staff be on the hot seat if you don't win this year?
To me 7's does help you win. So if you are cutting these corners I doubt you will be the best you can and win many games, thus, get ready to look for a new job.
And yeah I agree with other posters here that you do not want to above your HC. You are his assistant. If you don't like it, talk to him, quit, do what he allows / wants, or just follow his lead and don't bother.
But yeah you never want to get the rep as someone who will take issues outside of the program. Even though you may be right, "make your boss right"...for as long as he is your boss.

^catcoach, I realize my statement came across a little harsh and exaggarated, and I do not think the op was not being disloyal. I still am unsure of entire situation but above posters are dead on.
