How many of you have starting QB play on defense?
Here is our situation:
This is the biggest question we need answered this year. Our staring QB this year will be a first year strater. He was a starting FS last year and did an outstanding job.
Problem is this: We are a small school and numbers are tight. We are solid at nearly every position, but we only have 2 quality DB's (both corners), the QB would make 3 solid guys as he would paly FS in the 4-4. Problem with playing him on D is we have NO back-up, not one guy that has taken a snap, and no kid on our team fits that mold (single wing if QB goes down). So do we play QB both ways and take the risk or one way and go with a DB that is not a varsity caliber player?
What to do???

Play the kid at both, and if he's really good have him punt and return kicks too.
Get the good kids on the field.

We are a small school as well, so we usually have to play our QB on defense. If we have sufficient players to go without the QB on defense, that is our preference, but usually our guy has to play.

I think you have to have your best athletes on the field...especially at a small school.

If he's good enough, he should play.
You know what's happened to every team/program I've ever coached on that had a QB "sit out" defense so he doesn't get hurt? They all got hurt for extended periods of time either in PE or just practicing offense.
If they're going to get hurt, they're going to get hurt.

Play the QB on Defense and teach your next two best runningbacks how to take shotgun snaps and how to throw a fade and a hitch. If you have a couple of guys who can handoff and run QB counter from the gun as well as throw just enough to keep the defense honest, then they will be adequate backups.

We kept our QB off defense this year, just because we didn't need him. We only had 29 players 9-12, but some how we had 11 other guys who could play great defense. This year, he will most likely play defense.

I say QB goes in once the bad guys get past your 40. Play your back up, get him valuable game time reps, then when it matters, the 'men' go in.

We spot our Qb in when needed. He doesn't go full time on D, but does go to safety when needed.

Play your best 11 on defense... like he said... his kid is the best FS to fit that 4-4... we have large enrollment... but only pull in small numbers b/c of geographical location we have some kids that drive 35-40 minutes almost to get to school... so this is an issue i face... play them... train them to handle both ways... like the other coach said... teach 1-2 decent RB's to throw a fade, a quick hitch, handoff, and run some speed/load option... Prefer not to but if he's the best FS or whatever, he plays.
Defense is the most important part of any football team.
Heck, we've even had QBs return punts and one was NT on our Goal line defense because he was biggest kid on our team!

If you need him, play him. What good will it do if you score 28 pts but cant stop anyone? Is the FS in the 4-4 really gonna be the savior of stopping the other team from scoring more than 28? Play him on offense and find someone who can do the job on defense adequately. |

What is easier, finding another QB or a FS? I am not being silly here. If he is as easy to replace as letting a RB throw a hitch, he isn't that important as a QB. How intricate is your offense? Is he making checks and changing plays at the line? Is he the guy that makes things go? If he gets hurt and you can't get by without him, don't play him. If within 2 weeks of an injury to h im your O is adequate, don't worry aboutit and play him.
My QB is everything to our O. But he is most likely our best DB and will ikely play DB in college. I would be short changing him if I didnt allow him a little D, if only for his future. That being said he plays sparingly on D. When we need it, he is in there. And he likes it. Once had a QB start at MLB. He was a tough SOB and threw the heck out of the ball. He was like Dennis Rodman, if he wasn't in the game he could be getting in trouble.
I had a QB break his arm running scout. Oh well, also had one trip over his little sister's toys in the living room and break his arm. Tough luck. If it is going to happen, it is going to happen.

If you are a 4-4 cover 3 team and your FS cant make a play on the seams, it only takes 4 plays to give up 28. With that said, I wouldnt WANT my starting QB to be my starting FS but at a small school I understand the reasoning.

I hated not being able to play FS when I was a senior because I was the starting QB. Played FS my junior year and started at WR because we had a senior QB. Then I am the starting QB and all of a sudden I'm not allowed to play defense.
Haven't run into a situation where my QB could play defense the last few years so haven't had to worry about it, and the school I'm at now is a 2-platoon.

If you are a spread to pass team and your 2nd and 3rd team QBs are not "go to" guys, do you still play the QB both ways?
If he gets hurt, then what?

Then they shouldn't be running a spread-to-pass offense that isn't flexible enough that their 2's can operate it. We did it....kid was a 1K rusher and 2K passer...........we had to have him at FREE, so we did it. We prefer not to.......heck I prefer that our OL only have to play one way, but in reality that NEVER happens for us. |

In my 20 plus years at Waverly we have had 4 Div 1 Qbs and 2 other Div 2 Qbs, they did not play defense until the last kid we just had sign with ND, He missed 4 games at QB last season because he cracked his wrist playing FS. He signed with ND to play HB/Y. I don't think we will do that again!

I don't believe in playing my QB on defense because he is a passer first for me and if he gets his pinky hurt in a tackle we're done. I've done that a long time.
I personally witnessed a team lose a important district game because their QB was their SS and he was a hitter.
However, he come in for a tackle, got knocked out, and THEY got knocked out of the playoffs. Their coach didn't look like such a smart guy after that.
If you are running the DW, then your QB is probably one of your best blockers so that doesn't really matter. But if you throw the ball, then you are just looking for trouble.
I've put the QB in to play Nickel or Dime Back in end of the game situations, but that's about it.

Does your offense depend on "him" to run it? Or can any athlete run it.
If your offense will fall apart without him, you have to think twice about playing him on defense.
If someone else can hand off in your running and short throwing game, and he plays really good defense, play him.

I agree that it depends on your offense. If he's your go to guy, then you can't afford to lose him.
Perhaps he is a situational player.

I hope this won't hijack the thread, but I have always wondered if coaches look at this the same way for a stud TB in an I formation offense. If he is the man and carries the ball 25-30 times per game and your backup is a significant drop off, do you not play your TB on defense? Or is QB the only position that we as coaches worry about not playing on defense?
