We originally had 32 kids want to play. This week we have had 8 kids turn in their pads due to practice being to hard and 5 mom's scared to death that their son is going to die if they get hit.
We do what we can and scrimmage wise we need to do allot of 1/2 line. But how in the world can you get 1/2 line done if you are a option read team...we read backside de...good thing is if we pull the hand off we are getting tons of yards. What are some other creative ways you scrimmage and get a live look.

Sounds like us last season. We finished our last game with 16 on the team. BAD BAD year. 1-9. Can't believe we won one to be honest.
We invested about $50 and bought 6 large trash cans and turned them into DL/LB during team offense. We would then put our remaining players along with a few coaches in the rest of the positions. Not the best way to do things, but we could at least set up the defense and know assignments.
We are a flexbone team. So we put cans at the none read areas. Just script your Team period in a way that you dont have to continuiously move trash cans around.

We had 17 at some point last year...it is a challenge! Now we have 26 and I feel like I coach a real football team. As far as the zone read goes. have a player stand in to either squeeze or come up field...he would be the only player back side....Not ideal but....what can u do?

Doing the right thing academically and playing sports are not priorities in a lot of communities...they take a back seat to hustling and just plain laziness. BTW I'm not saying I know for a fact that these coaches' communities believe this...I'm speaking from my own experiences

Coachvann, good to hear from you again.
Last year, (a really tough one as you know) we had our normal 27 kids on the roster. The problem was that we really only had 13-14 players. So, the amount of "players" is what you should be looking at.
Coach, things are really tough all over for private schools in Florida. I know you've read of the closing of a couple of pretty powerful programs in Orlando. So don't get down, most everyone in private school is having it tough right now. Keep your chin up, you are a great guy and coach.
And, it's only Spring. You've got a pretty good area and high population to draw from, so I'm sure your numbers will be better when it actually counts. I quit putting much stock in Spring when we started our program at this small school 6 years ago. It just seems like that at a small private school things change TOO much from Spring to Fall. I've had huge swings and shifts in roster from Spring to Fall since I was here.
Now at the large public schools the connection from Spring to Fall was very important, but I've found that at the 1B level-not so much.
I know things will turn around for you. OJW

We have low numbers so we have grads come back to give us a look. They may or may not gear up, it is fun for them and we don't let them smack anyone so it's not going to turn into a legal issue.

I appreciate the ideas and the encouragement. I know I was down when I saw some of our starters from last year decide to hang them up. They told me that they were not going to do spring football but that they were going to come out fall...I told them no and that they were not going to get there stuff back.
Somebody ask how this happens-low enrollment and kids so use to having easy practices and there has been a change in tempo with me being the new guy. I thought having more wins would bring more kids out but the fact is they know they are going to work in practice and it has actually shrunk our team...I know those our guys I do not need on the team-but 19 kids on the team (really 14 players) is really tough instead of the 32-with about 10 athletes that quit!! I'm just venting now...thanks guys!

coachvann just something to think about here. If low numbers looks like it may be the norm, you might want to consider researching a scheme that you feel you could practice/implement better with the low numbers.

Ahh tell me about this we have about 25 registered players of which id say we regularly get 15 tops at games and training . Mostly because in the UK its a minor sport and its not taken as seriously and well at Uni there is alot of partying and studying and training and games sometimes take second place.
Anyways we just train our fundermentals , speed , strenght etc.. and then do walkthroughs best we can. If there is way too little players , say five or ten players at training just work on techniques make them do some running , catching , strenght work etc... it will help with everything else anyways.

We are rural area where most of my linemen, (6 footers over 220), are making 400-600 a week working the farm for daddy. They tell me coach I ain't gonna play in college. 1 of them from last year is building his own house on 50 or so of daddy's acres and will be done about a week after graduation this June.

we have about 2700 and finished the season last year in the playoffs with only 36 dressed...injuries and quitting and a non-conducive atmosphere, some things that have been handled and some that are going to take some time

Hey Coach, I know what you're saying, I've got a six man program that I'm starting and I've got a total roster of 13 and two of them are 6 graders who weigh 80 lbs. I probably have about a total of 7 "players." All you can do is keep on promoting your program and hope for the best. You are at a private school correct?

After reading some of these posts I am thankful for the 26 we have this year. I def hear ya on the "I can make money if I don't play" argument....we get that alot.

it just got better!! Our left tackle rehurt (not reinjured) his knee that he had surgery on back in October just turned it in!! I guess when it rain it poors!! So I'm down to 18 kids, but we did have a great week of tough drills and conditioning with these 18!! So not all is lost.

Coach Vann, Have you tried just going to pass skel and inside run? We did it this yr at the freshman level and got more out of both than we ever did out of full-team stuff. the only time we ran 11 on 11 was to install, which you could have coaches work cans/bags for... if i get out there with you, I'll be more than happy to play a little D-Line

we just started doing skelly with the whole team...it is pretty funny watching our big boys try to drop to hook to curl and deep middle...but they are loving the fact that they get to do some pass coverage and run pass routes. I'm just praying our DB's and WR's do not get use to their speed!! We are doing inside today--pray that I do not lose any of my fast guys-but it will make them tougher!!
