When you have players (or kids who SHOULD play) tell you that, "Football is too hard!" Pull this up: search.espn.go.com/e60-cody-rye/videos/6A kid from Ironwood Michigan, paralyzed from the waist down at age 5. Played D-Line and Tight-End for the Red Devils...caught a pass too! This kid has more heart in his chest than most. JVD

That's a great story.
But if I have a kid tell me "it's too hard" then I don't want 'em. Football isn't for everyone. We are the lucky ones who get it, who get to play it and coach it. If it's too hard...go play soccer.

"Football may be the best taught subject in American high schools because it may be the only subject that we haven't tried to make easy.” —Dorothy Farnan. English Dept. Chair - Earamus Hall H.S. 17 Reasons Why Football is Better Than High School - seventhgradeenglish.com/better.htmlI agree with wingtol. It isn't for everyone.

I agree. It isn't for everyone. The hard is what makes it great. That's why (at least around here) the kids that wear a jersey to school on Friday tend to get more respect and be more popular than other kids. The average student knows they can't do what those kids do. The story is a great inspirational story and would be great to show, IMO,when your team is down and out or your effort level is lacking. However, if a kid tells me football is too tough, then I don't want him. I want kids that will accept the challenge.

Congrats to Cody and all those who supported him in his quest.
His quote "the worst disease to have is feeling sorry for yourself" really struck home.
Great story.

Kids at our school don't tell me it's too hard. Me: "hey, why don't you play football?" Kid: "I'm too lazy" WTF??? I still haven't figured a good come back for that. Chit at least they are honest. LOL If you are serious, the best comeback I can think of is, "do want to stay lazy the rest of your life?" If the answers is yes, then you are done with them. Anything else, maybe a door cracked just a little.

We have that same problem. As soon as I hear that, I know we are in trouble. Can't make someone want to get better, work in the off-season, etc.

Great story. I echo the statement about that kid's heart. When I have a kid say football is too hard, I say then I guess you are not very tough, and end the conversation.

Football is not for everybody.
He11 I don't like opera but it's popular with some people.
It's got to be their idea to be there.
Form a team of winners - surround yourself with people to whom Football means something.
Don't get caught up in how many there are or who's not there. You only need 11 plus you if you've got the right 11.

This thread and responses seem very familiar. There may be a glitch in the Matrix.

when a kid says this take him down to the city welfare office get him signed up for welfare and food stamps because this is the only life he will every know because everything worth while in life is hard. IT is hard to get up and go to class every morning. it is hard to work two jobs while going to college. it is hard to work two jobs while having a family. one job to support them and one job to get the 20% needed for a new home.
It is hard to start your own business. I should know i have been bankrupt almost twice but I persist on to now I am very comfortable. it is hard when you are teaching school, then coaching then spending your winters, spring and summer flipping houses to get enough money to buy your first apartment which you still have to work because you take the money from the apartment and buy your first strip mall.
anything worth having is worth working hard at attaining it.
football teaches the values to showing up on time, focusing your attention, learning the skill of cooperation with other and team effort. I am not saying football is the only sport that teaches this either. however a kid who tells you football is hard it going to tell you the same thing about other sports. I suggest you give a consolation for life trophy because he will always be third rate.

Lol... Great minds think a like; I hear this out of the kids around here too. I point out that they all play basketball and they tell me that it's really easy because the basketball HC doesn't make them do anything. "Yeah, I told him I was tired the week before district and he didn't make me practice. He told me I needed to rest up so we could win."

When a kid tells me he doesn't want to play football because "it's too hard" I respond with, "Football is just a game. LIFE is hard; you not going to play that either?" If the kid rethinks it and comes out I'll work with him. If he doesn't... I'll go with the ones I have.

I do agree with blb on this subject.
We had three kids quit right in the middle of the season and I only asked them to come back out once. I left them alone after that; they had a chance to come back out, they chose not to so football doesn't mean much to them.

Excellent story. True inspiration, not just to kids, but to us all.. its funny how we can take things for granted when we are fully capable of doing it. God has a way of showing us to count our blessings and take advantage of every opportunity.
