...in your state? I am trying to do some research by finding out information on the top small school programs. Who in your state are the perenial contenders year in and year out? By small I am aiming for 700 or less students. Thanks for the feedback.

Delphos St. John's in Delphos, OH. Won the state title in Division 6 in 2010 77-7. A bunch of great small schools in Northwest Ohio.

Over half the HS in our state have enrollment under 700 so that may be too broad a sample size.
Mendon (2012 enrollment = 216) has won 11 state Football championships. That's who I think of for "small school Football."

In Illinois, that range would be roughly 1a-4a.
These are the top teams in the state in those classes over the last few years that have won a state title or were a runner-up:
Dakota Tuscola Galena Lexington Morrison Casey-Westfield Stillman Valley Tolono (Unity) Rochester Lena-Winslow Maroa-Forsyth Carthage (Illini West) Rochester
Incidentally, Tuscola has appeared in the title game 5 of the last 6 years or something like that and won a 1a state championship in 2006.
We also have a couple private schools that have won several state titles in those classes:
Aurora Christian (coached by Don Beebe) Lombard (Montini) Rock Island (Alleman) Sterling (Newman Central Catholic) Elmhurst (Immaculate Conception) Freeport (Aquin)

That's who I think of for "small school Football." Probably true of most states would be my guess. In Illinois, for example, our top two classes are 7a and 8a. Pretty much every team that plays in those classes is within 30 miles or so of Chicago. The rest of the state, 1a-6a, is pretty rural and the schools are small.

Louisiana... Elite regardless of size - west monroe (over 700), John Curtis, Evangel Large Schools - Neville, Acadiana, (over 700) Small Schools - Notre Dame, Parkview Baptist, St. Charles catholic (pretty serious last 8 years)
I am sure a few others can make claims.

And to just be accurate for those outside the state, John Curtis and Evangel fall in the "small school" category, each having around 300 students or so and playing in the 2nd smallest classification (2A, with 5A being the largest) Louisiana would mirror what most other coaches posted here in that the majority of schools would be considered "small schools" using 700 students as a criteria.

Small school in PA (A) is 185 boys and under 9-11. 700 would put you in the biggest class AAAA. The single A has been dominated by Clariton and Southern Columbia the last decade. Pretty sure they have won all the titles in the last 8-9 years. Lots of really good programs in A PA football.

But they run the same at 3rd grade rocket, that they run as a senior on varsity. Great program!

3 that came to mind immediately in Florida are Belle Glades, Pahokee and American Heritage. The list of NFL and big time college players that have come out of Pahokee and Belle Glade is crazy.

Arkansas
Junction city- right on the Louisiana border supposedly kids from Louisiana side don't like their school and cross the border to play for junction
Rison- 3a school who is a perennial power
Nashville- 4a school recently 3peated state champions Warren- 4a school have turned out several d1 athletes wright, Childs, and gragg who playe for Arkansas all went tothis school
Barton- I think they won 6 state championships in a row they fell off for a few years when their coach retired but went back to championship this year
All of these schools have less than 500 students 10-12

That's who I think of for "small school Football." Obviously not anywhere near as many state championships as Mendon but Crystal Falls Forest Park has been in the finals several times in the smallest classification in Michigan (13 appearances, 3 championships). I don't like bringing up private schools because I just have a great appreciation for kids growing up together and competing all of their lives through their years in varsity football. But Traverse City St. Francis and Muskegon Catholic Central should be in this conversation as well probably. But I do agree with you about Mendon. They don't even have the state championships listed on the "village limit" sign. When you're that good, you don't have to tell anybody...they already know.

In North Dakota 700 students puts you in the largest classification.
A town that I admire and would not consider small with 119 high school enrolment is Napoleon high school, they are defending state champs they have won 3 in school history and a couple runner ups but they are tough year in and year out they are physical and are perennial playoff contenders.

Climax Scott's has built a very nice small school program also. The whole school has sold out to the weight room. The females are stronger then most teams they play, and Kevin Lang's runs the whole weight room show. That's how he started to get on the right page with the football program

Is 1a biggest, or smallest?
Different states label divisions-classes differently.
In Michigan Division 1 is the biggest schools, Division 8 smallest.
Including those that play 8-man there are approximately 630 HS that play Football in our state.

AAAA - top 52 team AAA- next 52 AA next 52 A the remainder
So the under 700 are all of A and about half AA.
Some of note under 700 129 Silver Bluff
145 Batesburg Leesville
150 Abbeville
154 Bamburg Erhardt
183 Lake View
192 Blackville Hilda
