We just threw out 4 junk footballs. We have had them for a while and they were just taking up space on the shelf.
On my drive home I was wondering if we could have done something with them: - Make some kind of award - Sign and give to the principal - Etc.
So...question is: Do you do anything cool with junk footballs (besides throw them away)?

I just saw a drill where they take their old footballs and the coach throws it and the kids practice batting down a pass..it is a station on their turnover circuit

I've seen coaches cut a hole in one, push a broom handle in and fill the ball with expanding foam, to make one of those 'ball on a stick' things that DL coaches use to get their DL moving off the ball quicker.
Or you could have got a bit of wood, some tinfoil and a ball and make yourself a replica of the Vince Lombardi Trophy for your trophy case ;-)

I had a coach that gave them to kids to take home and play with. Hard to have a football culture in town if young kids don't have a ball to play ball with.

I've heard of people filling them with sand and using them as a ball security tool. Never done it myself though.

HC is die-hard Lions fan... That doesn't cause any tension.... BTW...he thought the replacement refs should have gotten a long term contract.... GO SEAHAWKS! HA HA!

We paint one panel with white paint and right different wards and records on them and hand them out at our football banquet. Its a great cheap way to give out a lot of awards at banquet.

Depends how you define an old football. If it can hold air we'll find a use for it.

If the still hold air I like the old slick footballs for running back ball security drills. Might have to try the fillem' with sand thing though.

If you really want to f*** with the RBs, cover it in duct tape and a little bit of petroleum jelly. Put them through typical footwork/agilities while trying to pop it out, they'll get a much stronger understanding of having equal coverage/pressure on the ball. I like using old balls for turnover circuits, kicking, and the previously mentioned sticks for DL starts. I'm curious about the sand filling thing, might try that.

We have our team sign it and give it to someone special every week. In the past we have given it to: - a coaches father who was dying of cancer - our AD who has gone to bat for us - A player who worked hard all week and didn't get alot of playing time - Scout team player of the week - A teacher who has volunteered their time to help our student-athletes do better in the classroom - program supporters that donate $, food, etc. for our team dinners
Bottom line we talk as a staff and sometimes involve the kids in the decision as well. Make someone's day better

I know that'd {censored} with me if, after we fumbled a whole lot in the last game, the coach told me that he brought some old footballs and KY Jelly so so I wont fumble the ball.

Thanks for all the ideas. I went to the trash bin they were in (3 days latter) and they were still there. (That's a whole conversation in it self.....)
I took them to the art teacher and tossed a few ideas out there. She was pumped!
She is going to paint 2 panels white. One panel will have our team logo painted on it and I got with the captains and they are going to have the team sign the other panel and give it to our HC at our awards banquette.

When they give him the present, I'd probably cut the bit of the story where you raked it from a bin ;-)
Nice gift tho!

I love the ideas, I usually send a ball home over the summer with each center to snap, and each quarterback to get out and throw.
