lesson i learned 1st hand...you have to hold them accountable. you are probably not gonna win a game any way might as well lose them with the kids who are committed

It's not summer expectations or is running kids off. Our upcoming junior and sophomore classes aren't worth crap as a whole. Getting them to lift is like pulling teeth, even during the school year. Baseball and basketball are having similar issues.
My thought: when you are so small you depend on each kid. No one is expendable. And when you are small and have a couple of crap classes in a row, you're screwed.

Has anyone ever had issues like these after you think you have the program going in the right directions? Sorry to quote myself, continuing with more detail. Our 2nd spring, we had 45 players out of 115 boys in school. Most in over a decade. Had a great spring...had a great scrimmage against cross county rival that is 3x or size. Summer starts and... attendance is pitiful...several kids dont come back. Finished last year with 32 guys. Hell if I know.

I have never had a kid who wanted to quit, but was talked back into coming back, ever be anything but a detriment to the team when the going got tough. If they quit now, they'll quit when their back is against the wall later. I agree. As much as I hate to lose a kid, if their heart isn't in it they need to go somewhere else.

That's one of the reasons I like for my delusional space cadets to go to the recruiting camps. Lets them see what a real D1 athlete looks and performs like.

My next school will not be good at show choir (laugh but we lose kids to it yearly) and will not care about American legion baseball. My current school the kids care more about legion baseball than school ball. Dang traveling teams, your kid ain't good enough to make team A, let's just create a new one.

With regards to the weight room...its not an absolute. I have a coach who runs the weight room. He does his deal. I'm good as long as I see the progress I want. But he is my guy and it's one of the reasons I hired him.
Control of money and fundraising would be big on my list.

Agreed; but you also get lazy guys who hide behind the "efficiency", but in reality just don't want to be there longer than they need to. Why is not wanting to be there longer than you need to considered lazy? Being there longer than it takes you to get your work done is stupid. The older I've gotten, the more I realize the kids need time to be kids. And I need time to be with my kids.

i'll admit, i hate to lose the kid, but i'm excited to lose the parents. He was the type that if he made a mistake on the field, when he got to the sidelines, you couldn't talk to him because he was looking the the stands to see what his parents though/reacted. Borderline uncoachable.

Anyone else ever lost a player to another school and your 1st thoughts are "glad those parents are gone."

I did the same. Offered them to our kids at a discount $10. Then to public for $20.

If it is an organization that is not connected to your school like a rec league or travel league, then there is nothing you can do besides trying to convince them that it will help in the future.

We have O/D starters who play scout, but we don't want to beat them up. In our team sessions, we focus on that side of the ball. We will start with best of rest but will alternate in scout players who are the first back-up's. If we simply want a "look", we will keep the starting O/D and totally use other guys. We make a big deal to the scout team guys(who are not starters) that this is their team period; this is a time for them to get noticed. We also coach-up the scout team. The defensive guys who coach the scout teams coach them as if they are the starters preparing for the championship game. This...many places ive been, the coaches check out during scout team.

Well, week 1 of spring is in the books and i'm reminded of a couple of famous quotes... 1. What do you think of your teams execution....I'm all for it. 2. We're small and weak, but we make up for it by being slow. I used to complain about being small, weak and slow and then I looked inward and realized my S&C program sucked. Made drastic changes to it and we were small, powerful, and quick I know what you mean... In reality, we are small school with about half our roster for next year being freshmen. Our upper classmen are fine, just not alot of them so the overall perception is wee look like a glorified JV team. Well, we are based on the numbers.

Run 2 or 3 different groups.
Have 2 groups huddle, each at opposites 45's and rep away from each other. coaches can spin and coach both groups on the fly. Just takes a little organization.

The GA rule is basically someone tells on you or you self report, because we don't submit anything. Plus it starts on Friday night and works through Thursday. It isn't a problem for us, we do play about 10 kids 6 quarters. They all chill with there pads off after Half time of the JV game. JV games can be funny because of the rule I've been. In a few where one team will flat out dominate the first half, then their key guys undress, and the other begins to dominate.

the key part to ga rule is that the count starts on varsity game (friday) and runs through the following thursday. you don't have to worry about kids playing in a varsity game if the need arose. at smaller schools, piecing together the jv team the next week can be challenging. and it's all self enforced.

"Quit running it up the middle, use your athletes" - during game where tailback ran for 290 yards off tackle "Throw the ball" in games where our opponent cant stop the run. "Why the *&% are you throwing the ball" after an interception... 'We need to open up the offense' says QB parent.

Good one I’ve heard a bit of - “this group of kids won a conference championship when they were all together in youth. There’s not a reason they can’t win it all at this level.” Other gems - “my son won (insert generic award in a youth sport). He could be the best player on the field if coach would give him the chance”, “Johnny told me teammate x starter is thinking about transferring. Coach should give him reps to get him ready”. There are some other gems. I’m going to have to go back and look at old rosters to help jar my memory. One of my favorites...'when i coached them in rec ball we won x championships'

1- Kids knew who were getting the awards before the banquet? Or were these just kids who were certain they themselves werent getting an award? In either case, I don't think I have ever seen this. I mean in addition to a nice dinner and at least an opportunity to be called up and be recognized while they get a certificate; there is the chance to hang out with teammates and friends, watch the coaches get a good natured ribbing, etc. There always seem to be a few that miss, but I never had someone miss under protest of not winning an individual award Ones that assumed they weren't getting anything. selfish guys. maybe we need a cage of culture
