I'm finally at the age where I don't understand teenagers... the game isn't even that good.

Man, I play it, don't watch the streams or anything, but it's a blast. But just like Pokemon Go, all the LoL/Dota and other stuff, it will die down in popularity soon. It is on a strong run though, that's for sure.

I played video games when I was younger, but I sure didn't watch others play. I don't get it.

Funny story I have to share on this topic. My kid was watching YouTube videos of somebody else playing and I say something to the effect of "you have this game right? And you would rather watch somebody else play the game than to play it yourself?" In a very judgemental dad tone.
Couple days later I'm watching an NFL game and junior walks in and says "you have a football right? And you would rather watch them play football than to play it yourself?" I had nothing in response.

I remember being a kid and people mobbing to arcades for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 tournaments; moreover I remember lots of people having all night Madden tournaments when I was in college. I imagine kids of a previous decade were just as hyped for Space Invaders or Donkey Kong.
The only differences are now you can play from home yet have some social interaction (headsets playing online) and you don't have to mow throw quarters.
Its all pretty much the same.

I was thinking the same thing. We watch film so that we can help our team play better.

I definitely think there are trends this one just seems much stronger. I am out of touch with the video game world. My son plays and I think it’s silly but we talk about it’s okay to have different tastes. I draw my line with him when he wants to spend real money on fake money to buy stuff within a game.

B/c your young, and it was fun! Only difference is I didn't miss practice / weights etc...b/c I was playing in a Street Fighter 2 tournament!

We did tons of stupid stuff and stayed out late when I was a kid. Somehow we made it to practice. I have nineteen years of coaching experience and have seen a ton of fads. But nothing has had a greater effect on kids than Fortnite... Fortnite is basically the devil... It has a powerful grasp on our youth.

Yeah, but when we were kids we didn't have that option available to us (youtube), so who knows how many kids from our generation would have been doing the same. The NBA is now sponsoring an E-League where the top NBA Live players form teams and compete against each other for decent sized paychecks, and they get millions of fans watching them play. Heck, my baby bro would pay to go to these conventions and watch gamers compete on large screens- and that was before Fortnite. People have been watching others play video games online and in conventions for a few years now, Fortnite is just the newest hot game. Moreover, I don't know how many of you have young kids, but a couple years ago a trend started where people would make youtube videos of themselves opening up toys wrapped up in blind bags....and it was a smashing success. Millions of young kids (8 and below) would log in to watch another kid get a toy and unwrap it- picture sitting around at a birthday party except doing it online and you don't know the kid.

A few of my linemen (given the option of most linemen this definitely makes it odder) were hanging out in my room in between senior day stuff and talking about what they were doing that night. One of them said he was supposed to hang out with his girlfriend. The other ones said they were playing the game and he should come over. The kid went into serious contemplation on what to do. This same young man put off getting his drivers license for a month to go to prom with the girl. I about said something then I thought...nah let me just put it on Huey instead.

I couldn't stand watching my friends play when it wasn't my turn, so I can't believe I'd ever enjoy watching a video of someone else playing. I also have a really hard time watching any football any TV or live if I'm not involved with it.

Couple days later I'm watching an NFL game and junior walks in and says "you have a football right? And you would rather watch them play football than to play it yourself?" I had nothing in response. I think this partially speaks to how we perceive talent and the skills of gamers. We watch pro and college sports because we are watching finely tuned athletes plying their crafts at the highest level- the same can be said for people who are into music, or acting, etc. I think for many of us we don't see there being an 'elite level' of gaming ability that differentiates the average man from a great (other than spending a lot of time playing games). Sure there are some people who are better than others, but to a level worth actually watching them, most of us here would not think so. I guess for those into gaming they can recognize an elite level (or at least they think they can). A second point, is that when I watch sports I am actually seeing those athletes compete. I just saw Kevin Durant make an amazing shot right now, the actual athlete do something spectacular. When people watch gaming they are watching avatars perform pre-programmed moves; and no matter how fun NBA Jam was as a kid a dunk from the free throw line by a computerized character doesn't really carry the same weight. The actions of the gamer (rapidly pressing buttons on a small control) are nowhere near as interesting as the game itself, and that to me is a material difference between the two: one is watching the talent on display the other is watching the outcome (basically watching the scoreboard). Now don't get me wrong, I can be intrigued by the new graphics or game play of a video game- but to watch someone else's character is different than watching them....at least to me.

Yep Fortnite is so popular not necessarily because the game rocks. They are geniuses in how they set it up. First, free. Second, can be played as teams. This is key. Social. Can be played 1 vs 99. 2 vs 98. 4 vs 96. and 50 v 50. Third, cross platform. I can be on an xbox. You can be on ps4. Someone else can be on an iphone. Our fourth teammate can be on a pc. And we can all play the same game. Fourth, it is a kill everyone last man standing game where you shoot and build and drop in from the sky and the storm shrinks you until everyone is close together. I don’t play, but all three of my kids love it and went crazy when they finally won.

I didn't get watching streams either til I was looking for a video on how to beat something and it directed me to Twitch. I've been pretty hooked on it since then. By hooked I mean watch in my free time, not like missing work for it or anything like that. A lot of these cats put in a ton of work and practice to run games. It's fun for me to talk about retro games from childhood with someone who is playing it. I can learn how to get better at it and make some new acquaintances. I get how it's not everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of those streamers put in as much work as we do coaching. Plus the precision of seeing someone beat the original Super Mario in under 5 minutes is pretty cool and nuts how tight the margins for error are.
Fortnite I don't totally get. Doesn't seem that great.
