How much stock to you put in year to year film.
For instance: I have 3 years of film breakdown on team X. I take this years film and study it, then put in the repository for the previous years. Run my reports to see any trends. Sometimes I see stuff... sometimes I don't.
Do you put stock in this?
When a new HC comes in...I archive it.
Sometimes I see trends (i.e. a team we play historically will run option until they get into the red zone...then they run more iso)
Wondering how much you look at historical data....
Thanks, JVD

It depends on whether or not there are major changes to the staff: head coach, off coordinator, def coordinator. Also depends on how consistently they have done the same stuff from year to year. Some people change a lot, others have the same tendencies every year.

I know we have gone back to old film for a very particular reason.
Week 1 game, against a new coach who hasn't had a team in a while/in the area. But we have old film from when he did. It helped us add more formations and plays when we saw it was the same stuff they were running in their scrimmage.

Obviously, if you look at last year's film you don't have to guess at how they'll attack you. There it is. If you compare last year's tendencies with this year's it also helps you understand them better. Do they run Power Right a lot because that's their philosophy or do the have a great RT?
Of course, if there's a coaching change it all goes out the window (unless he comes from a school in the league).

In our area I think it has a lot to do with personnel too. We are all smaller schools, so if someone has a stud FB...they are going to run FB more. Stud QB, throw more, ect.
Interesting topic I have been thinking about for a while

I don't watch old scout film much at all, but if I have the 2 or 3 years of previous years of our games against them I will go back and look at those.
I think if you run an offense (wing-t, spread, option) that the rest of their opponents don't, you sometimes get a better scout look from how they played you the year before. For example, we will play a team week 3 this year who will play 2 spread teams before we play them. We are a SBV team so seeing how they align to 4 and 5 wide sets doesn't hold much value for us. Instead, we will go back and pull our film and see how they played against us last year, and possibly how they played a flexbone team as well. Once we have that, we will go back to this years film to look at personnel.

I can totally see if we played them week 1 or 2 how looking back would be helpful.

Like some has said, depends on many factors. One of our arch rivals is gonna continue to run the same basic O and D, so we will study that one closely. Another team on our schedule just got a new HC, so you can just about throw that one out the window.

We don't use Hudl, so therefore we don't get the detailed breakdowns other people use. We'll often break out last year's film of us vs. a big opponent if we have some to look for general scheme/formations/plays, tendencies, or players to keep an eye on that they liked to do against us, but that's as far as it goes. Actually, that's about how we break down any film.
If it's an early season game, we focus a lot more on last year's film, but we don't go past that. So much stuff can change from year to year that we don't emphasize it, and would much rather focus on their last 3 games from this season, if possible. However, if they burned us with something a year ago, even if we haven't seen it from them this year, we will definitely focus on stopping that in practice.

My HC has film from every year he has coached. At the end of each year, he has downloaded all the game files into a portable hard drive and has it extensively labeled. Its not only broken down my opponent, but by coach as well. It is quite impressive to see. I have been put in charge of this hard drive now and make sure the last three years are broken down the same way. I have spend many an hour watching old film learning. Its a pretty sweet thing to have at my disposal.

As a rule, we never EVER throw away opponent film. I know that when we want to see how an opponent will line up to a certain formation, and we can't find it on the current year's film, we'll go back the past few seasons to find it.
It's my hope that thousands of years from now, when archeologists dig up my office, they'll be able to find out exactly how we lined up against 12 personnel trips on every 3rd and 5 in the past decade.

If archaeologists dig up my office...they will find a lot of snickers wrappers and Diet Mt. Dew bottles....

We keep it all as well. I look at it as a learning tool for myself to see what techniques we need to work more and get a better idea of what worked well for us. I know you lose kids to graduation but it could also serve a as a good teching tool in fall camp for young kids.

I'm not saying I don't clean things out, but when I moved last year I literally had a stopped moment when I came across film/scouting reports/break downs from 2000. 1. Only 2 coaches who coached in that league then are still coaching. 2. 2 of them are dead 3. I haven't coached in that league since 2006 4. I moved halfway across the state 5. I don't even own a VCR anymore so how the F was I going to watch the film anyway 6. The rosters were a little out of date seeings how everyone listed is now around 30 yrs old. So you know what I did? That's right, I put that chit in the truck and brought it with me...you never know when you might need it. Yup ., I threw out something I got in 1992 a couple of years ago..sure as chit I was scrambling around a few weeks ago looking for it..forgot that i forgot to save it
