I wear a different pair of shoes each day (rotate, that is, through 4 or 5 pair). I also wear running shoes, not coaching shoes.

We did get burned one year. Our QB was having a great year and we were 8 - 0. He got dinged on a punt return and we lost our next two games!
We played our QB on defense one year and he was a corner. We kept him into the boundary and that helped keep him fresh.

The best way to learn a position is to coach it. Kind of like the idea that the best way to learn something is to teach it.
We have 4 on our staff and we break it down this way: HC/OC/QB/TE/LB AHC/OL DC/DL/RB WR/DB

We do down-ups like most everyone else. The difference is in how what we call them. Instead of saying "you are being punished for bieng late" we say you are doing a memory-enhancement drill so that you will remember to be on time. It gets a chuckle from the parents at our parent meeting!

In California we are divided into Sections, which are large geographical areas. I believe there are 10 of them. Each Section is divided into Divisions. Our Section has 7 Divisions. Leagues can be made up of schools in different Divisions. Our League is classified as a Division II League, but we have both Division II and Division III schools in it. When we qualify for the play-offs we go to our respective Divisions.

Yes, we do during game week. It takes 10 minutes. 1 coach is the sanp count and whistle. The other coaches are judges so that there is no bickering. It keeps the tempo high. And, yes, we make sure the QB's are in there as well.

On Wednessdays we divide into our 4 groups. They are roughly by position and/or size. After our warm-up we meet at the logo in the middle of our field. Guys come out in pairs and on a snap count attempt to knock eachother off of the logo. You lose, you take a knee, you win you get back in line. We do this until there is a champion in each group.

We give them out for reaching certain standards in off-season testing. We test in bench, squat, clean, dead, 40, short shuttle, and long shuttle.

flexoption91,
we have been tempted to stagger the game suspensions but have not done that. We have never been at full strength for our first game but we are usually very close. Our 1st opponent is a very good team and it can cost us as all games count here towards earning a playoff spot.
We handle the parents by never calling it a punishment. We always refer to it as "earning" a spot on the team. We go to great lengths to explain the importance of each point and how it relates to success in our program.

We have a point system. There are 7 points possible: winter sport, spring sport, spring football class, fall football class, spring football practice, summer weight training and conditioning, and football camp. They must have 5 points. For every point they are below that is a game suspension. We have had kids sit out the 1st 5 games!

I actaully attended all of those clinics this year except the All Sports. I had a positive expierence at all of them. I think I enjoyed those clinic more that were at venues that had places for the coaches to socialize. I say that because some of the best information I received has been sitting in the sports bar sharing ideas.

In California, Sac-Joaquin Section, we have 2.0 rule and must pass 4/6 classes. Each school district may have a waiver policy for the 2.0 rule.

nels85,
Understood. I would agree that Sun Tzu or other martial studies are not always applicable to sports.
Where I am at, JV is for sophomores. We are not allowed to play upperclassmen on the JV.

Not to be argumentative, but there have been many great football coaches that studied military stategy and applied the lessons learned to football. One was a guy named Bill Walsh, and I think he was a pretty good coach.
As far as avoiding contact, in the context offered, I was refering to moving up the younger players. I don't think it is defeatist to have a long term goal and save those kids from being throttled.

Actually, I think that assuming every game is winnable is ridiculous. As football coaches we constantly compare our situation to war, quote from the "Art of War", etc. Any good general would avoid contact with an enemy that can overwhelm.
