Coaches,
I know that this has been on here before, but I was wondering how you guys handle exit interviews?
What do you talk about? Do you give your players anything to take with them? Anything you have done that has worked well?

I think something that works really well is just doing one "conversation" per day as soon as the season is over. I've done the forms but have lost them, not read them, etc. Having a conversation and letting them do 90% of the talking has worked very well. The kids always walk away knowing the coach listened and made them feel important. It gives me a chance to hear any problems, and also what to improve on. Don't get me wrong, I love the form idea though, I just haven't been very good at it. The best opening line I use: "Tell me in your own words what you thought of this season, and please DO NOT just tell me what I want to hear."

We have our kids fill out a form and bring it to the meeting. We use this form to guide the interview process. We talk about the season, let the athlete talk about his concerns, his strengths/weaknesses and then we talk about how we feel their season went. We also hit on their goals for after high school to identify kids who really want to play college football. When they leave, we give them another form to fill out anonymously and they turn that into our AD's secretary. The form asks for grades of coaches and the team as a whole and has questions that could be uncomfortable asking in person or attaching one's name to. We want to get an honest response.

We have kids over 2 weeks sign up for times to meet with a panel of coaches. They have a packet to fill out that looks for feedback on the past season, experiences, coaching, goals, etc. We then have an open discussion where coaches are asking the player anything they want to know. In return the player can do the same to coaches. It has helped us out tremendously of knowing kids needs and also kids who take part in off task behaviors.
