We did board drills with the team once a week. With a team around forty we would divide the team into four groups. The groups were by position and size. We would bring the board out to the 50 yard line and place it on our logo. We would start with the two smallest in each group and work up in pairs. As each pair finished, the loser would take a knee and the winner got back in line with their group. We would repeat until there was a winner for each group and then we would square off the winners of the two biggest groups and the two smallest groups. We generally did this on Wednesdays.

We used to run a gasser for every point we lost by. If we were down by 35 and they were driving on us I would remind the boys that 35 is better than 42!

We used to have "Joke of the Week" after practice on Wednesdays. Our DC brought the jokes. It was great when the jokes were funny and maybe better when they were not!

We switched a few years ago to this. We used to go to camp at Oregon and they are the ones that sold us on the idea. We were always a slow starting team/program and we tried many different things to attempt to rectify the problem. Nothing worked until we did this and it was immediate!

I still coach them up during pre-game. And during the game as well. When something is wrong it must be corrected.

In California there are 10 Sections. Each section determines the structure of their playoffs. At the end of the section playoffs they pick two teams from the north and two teams from the south to play in regional championships in 4 divisions. The winners of these regional finals then face each other (North vs. South) in State Bowl games.
