39 years so far. 1 year Frosh assistant 2 years JV assistant 5 years Varsity assistant 23 years Varsity Head 8 years Juco assistant (9 if you count COVID)
Also served as Head Coach for 13 Pig Bowl games. I coached the Law Enforcement team vs. the Fire team. 12-15 practices leading up to one game.
Head Coached two High School All Star games. One was in the olden days when we had 3 weeks of practice then the game. The other was one week then the game.
Assistant coached a Youth All Star game that played two games, one in California and one in Florida. Head coached another Youth All Star game.
It has been a great ride but I am feeling the end. Told everyone this last Pig Bowl (the 50th!) was my last. Also asked our Juco Head Coach to reduce my time and duties, which he agreed to do.

We gave out helmet stickers but they were all for stuff in the off season. Also, Frosh team got a stripe on their helmets, JV had stripes and number decals on the side, Varsity had stripe, number decals, and helmet stickers.

We use one word tags for each combo and communicate them left then right. "Hero" = hitch, "Door" = slant bubble so left to right would be Hero Door.

Really good TB is struggling. Trainer goes out to find out what is wrong. She walks him off the field, trying to hold back laughing. I ask her what is wrong with him and she says "He didn't want to cramp up tonight so he took a bunch of Midol."

We used to have each indi group do something position related that got them warmed up. For example TE's started with ball drills.

We tested three times a year. Coinciding with the end of our three 12 week cycles. Generally we tested at the end of the season before we left on Winter break. We tested anyone that was new to our program when we returned. The next test came around Spring Break and usually we bent the schedule to do so right before they left. The third test came the week before we started practice. This was the test you qualified for the award t-shirts and hoodies for certain clubs (800, 900, 1,000, etc.) You also received helmet stickers for certain levels of achievement (all helmet stickers were earned from off season accomplishments). I was the Head Coach for 23 years and kept all the records. We could see the development of our athletes from their freshmen year until their senior year. The other subtle reason we did testing the week before was it got our knuckleheads back into the program. In our Section we had a two then eventually a three week dead period. This was vacation time, etc. We would usually open the weight room but it was true voluntary. "Testing Week" became physical/paperwork week as well as handing out gear so that on Monday we hit the ground running, so to speak. The Strength program was vital to our programs development into a year in and year out contender. The testing held them accountable. It also is competitive and you cannot practice competition enough IMHO. I have been called an idiot and incompetent, but never because of our strength program! Usually those comments came from the stands on Friday nights for running trap on 3rd and 15 I still don’t understand why you call it “voluntary” when it’s clearly not if you’re testing them? The one to two week dead periods before testing week were voluntary. In our Section you can only strength train and condition. Most of us took our vacations then. In our community we felt that we needed to open the weight room for some of the kids. Some needed a place to go for an hour or so, if you met their families you would understand.

Team room was in the stadium. Coaches would go into the snack bar after to debrief and wait until the kids cleared out. Then we had an incident. After that we would go into the team room to debrief and whiteboard some things. Not only did it stop incidents from happening again but the kids cleared out much faster! Win, win!

Grade using this system: 2 = Exceptional play 1 = Did your job with acceptable technique 0 = Flaw in technique or assignment -1 = Complete Bust / Mental or Physical Make notes on why a 2 or 0/-1 Grading is more about being a tool for improvement.

We had the same issue at the school I was the HC at for 23 years. What fixed the problem was when we went away from walk through the day before the game and went full pads and ended the practice with half line 1's vs. 1's.

I heard it came from youth soccer. Coaches would have the players take a knee if a player was injured to keep them from running around.

Testing in our program was not about evaluation but about holding players accountable.
I heard that Nebraska, back in the day when they were the gods of strength and conditioning knowledge, beleived the biggest correlation to testing and actually making plays was vertical jump.
