I am at a much smaller school where all of our players are never off of the field and we take a big cut as far as talent when we drop to 2nd team...tons of 1/2 line!! We lost 5 starters within those cuts-For us that is 10 positions! I found that we were able to do allot more with the 18 kids with character than with the 28 kids with more athletic ability!! Sooo....a question: You lost 5 starters, 10 positions and yet you were able to do more with less...and by less I mean less kids as well as lesser athletes...so in the future if you lose 5 starters, will you still be losing 10 positions? On the whole character issue - I am huge on that and I sometimes get out of line when dealing with it. My mindset is simply that of Gunny Highway "No one goes over the wall on me." Now you may end up ineligible, you may get into some trouble, you may this or that but those things are not going to come easy. I have went to several houses over grades and weight room attendance. If I've taken that step, then rest assured when I show up at your door: #1 - I am not going to be happy, #2 - you also are not going to be happy, #3 - you know I care. and don't get it messed up, I've been in a crack house over a kid before and I'll be in one again, don't tell me I won't come to your house. Sheee-it - 2 weeks ago I went looking for my sophomore RB because baseball was over and he hadn't been at weights yet. So I go to his mom's house. Mom is an addict, lives in the drug house, I get there and there are 8 people sitting on the porch drinkin at 2:30 in the afternoon, you all know the scene. I walk up on the porch, tell them who I am, met everyone...that's a process incase you don't know and that I was looking for *******. Of couse they hadn't seen him, but could find him. So they texted him to come over. In the meanwhile, I stood there just BS'in with everyone, talking, etc. you know. Kid comes walking up the street, evidently didn't see me or my car, comes up on the porch, finally sees me and was floored to see me there. He asked me what I was doing there and before I could answer everyone on the porch started ripping his butt. "he's here cause your little dumb*** ain't been at weights" "and what's up with your ****ing grades?" "WTF are you doing ******, this man came here to find YOU...do you know how crazy a MFer has to be to come up on this porch lookin like he looks and not be the police?" I looked at him and said "so...weights tomorrow? You'll be there?" His aunt says "you damm right he'll be there, we're sorry coach." The next day at school, I explained to him that his family is there for him to fall back on. But those cats are where they are because of the decisions they have made, they didn't want to end up where they are and they are making it the best they can. They want a better life for him. While they may not say it, they would be damm proud if he got out. No matter what degree he got, they would be proud of him. Word on that traveled pretty fast - apparently it was a big twitter deal for a while there. But our weight room numbers increased immediately and our grades came up. I asked one of the kids about it and he said "man...if you're crazy enough to go to *****'s house, I know you ain't got no problem coming to mine." If they are on the fence they are useless to you. You've got to make them or break them. At least that's my opinion. Your the f---ing man... We had nuns that use to do that... no one does that any more... I love it..... Keep up the great work!!

Every year, I get a few kids who bail on me who I really wish I could have kept, and who no doubt could have helped the team. Like the rest of you, it frustrates me to no end. My best antidote for that? Talking to all of the new kids who sign up. Every year, you get a few really promising new kids who just sort of land at the edge of the field. The light went on for them, and they are so excited to get started on their football adventure that they can't contain themselves. Seeing their eyes light up as they get their gear, and you talk up the program - that's what makes this worthwhile. My father was an Army Cadet instructor for decades, and he always told me, "You can't save them all, son." He knew how much it killed me to lose kids. As I have gotten older, I have gotten better at shrugging off the kids who leave, and finding joy in the kids who really want to be there. One final thought - ever had a kid, or a few kids, who drag their butts all season, giving you nothing but grief and heartache with their bad attitudes, and spreading it all around the team like a bad flu virus? Ever sat there and cursed yourself for not just cutting them when you should have? Well, there you go - they just cut themselves, and saved you the trouble. even Jesus lost 1 out of 12...

Over half the HS in our state have enrollment under 700 so that may be too broad a sample size. Mendon (2012 enrollment = 216) has won 11 state Football championships. That's who I think of for "small school Football." I agree 100%... there are other good small schools that other coaches have listed in MI... but Mendon is the best... and my AD wont let me play them... I just want a shot...

I had my girl friend read this thread and the first thing she said is Honey that is so you.... and now she knows it is normal to have a big 4x8 dry erase board in the living room. She also said that if we were married and the baby was coming on game night no problem her mom would be more than glad to stand in. I'm not sure how I feel about that but she is the most understanding woman I have met when it comes to my coaching. I might have to put a ring on her finger. I told my now wife there is only one month we can get married in and that is June so we did that this summer. When talking about kids I told her we can't have a kid in the fall because what if he (hoping!) is born on Friday night? Her response was well you will miss the game then. My response was I'm the OC my kids depend on me and need me there! Obvioulsy she didn't find the humor in the fact that I think my kids need me at a game more than my wife does giving birth! I did explain to her that her mother could take over for me for a few hours... We didn't practice making babies for a while after that one!!!! Whatever you do, DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT...point out the fact that single mothers have kids everyday.

In Michigan you can never have a sub high schooler go against a High Schooler in a drill or scrimmage per the MHSAA. Not staying it doesn't happen, but it is illegal. That being said we do run a 4 day camp together, but have them doing the same drills side by side. We just do not ever have a high schooler against a junior high kid. Personally I don't think a 8th grader vs a 9th graders is a big deal, but you always have at least one senior that has to show the freshman how tough he is and I sure don't want him doing that to a 7th or 8th grader.

Coach if you find this study please share it with the rest of us. I would love to read it. We have talked about doing it too, during the season. Having a 6am practice, once a week, getting done at 7:30, and then they are done for the day. Easier said than done, but it MIGHT be able to be done at the Varsity level. I'd be curious to know if anyone has done it. At the University of Oregon clinic last weekend, we learned that in-season, Thursday is a "no run" day. There is supposedly some literature that says it is better to go full-pads the day before a game, and better to do very little 48 hours before a game- to get maximum performance on game day. It intrigued us to say the least. I am trying to find that study, because that idea coupled with an early AM practice on a Wednesday morning (for a friday game); along with a film session afterschool on Wednesday, might be a smarter (but much less traditional) way of doing things.

Another Coach you may wish to get in touch with is Kalamazoo College and all students there including football players are required to spend one year studying in a foreign country. This really hurts their sports teams. Would be a good way for their football players not to have to take a year off.
Here are the details:
I was thinking of kind of a gentleman agreement:
We (my team) offer opportunities to players or coaches to come over to play or coach for a year. You (D3 Football Program) allow us to send coach or player to summer camp.
I don't know if it is realistic. Let me know what you think.
Coach, what have you done specifically to do this? I love the concept, but need help with the details. JML I coached under a disciple of Frosty Westering. It changed my ENTIRE outlook on coaching. And it did so for the better. Now I focus to to win the hearts of the players first, take a genuine intrest in them as people, and man those kids will play their butts off for you when you do this! Plus this generation of kid does not respond to the old school "grab your facemask and challenge your manhood" type of motivation as we did. I think this is due to the lack of of fathers in alot of kid's lives right now, but that is a whole nother can of worms to explore later.

We get the same thing. I think it has to do with expectations being raises, but I would think people would want to be part of a winner. I don't know about getting better and winning. The 2 programs I've coached in our numbers dropped every year after we made the playoffs. Damnest thing I've ever seen.

I think it depends on your school size and number of talented players that you have. Worst year I have had 10 2 way players and best year 1-2. The fewer the better. I think the biggest thing with 2 way players is you need either a very simple offense or very simple defense. Cut back on the physically of practice too.

I agree we do OL and DL every day on footwork, but the other positions it is about once a week and a lot less time..

For our offensive linemen football is very important. We work on it day one and at least 2 times a week during the season. The kids get to the point were they know it by heart and can run the drills them-self.
Since I live in Michigan I will throw this out there. Michigan State has a good quarterback, but they never ever work on footwork with him. They get to the big game (Iowa) and he throw 3 ints off his back foot. I will never understand how a BCS school doesn't work foot work with their quarterback.

I agree with not letting her interrupt practice. Had I made the mistake of saying yes, I would have kicked her off the field for being disrespectful and wasting my time.

I would say that 95% make those times in the 1st week of practice. We make them run it again each day until they make it. After the first week it is usually the really fat kids who don't make it. Then you can have them do a different test or make them keep doing it. jml Do your kids make those times? I saw where haynesworth had 70 seconds and 73 seconds to complete his 300 yard shuttle and didnt make it. I would think you would gie younger kids more time. But I have never done that test so I dont know.

We do the 300 yard shuttle test. I like it because while it is not completely football specific. It is more so than a mile run or a 12 minute run. I think football is all accelleration and deceleration and the player has to do both of those 12 times. We use 1 minute for our backs and 1:05 for our linemen as target times. For the JV we at 5 seconds.
People jump on it like it is a terrible test. Is it perfect? No, but I also think it is better than the 40. It is so rare to see a football player run 40 yard with out changing speed or direction. I think the best tests are probably the pro shuttle 5-10-5 and the 10 yard dash. The 10 yard dash has to be electronically timed for it to be accurate however.

I use the following terms to teach leadership to my players: All with a powerpoint and discussion Attitude Preparation Perseverance Respect Honesty Integrity Courage Appreciation Self-Control Empathy Gratitude Tolerance Duty Loyalty Responsibility Compassion Leadership Character Anything we can teach our boys about becoming men will benefit them and your program 10 fold... Coach that is a great list. Would you be willing to share some of those powerpoints? JML

Our starting QB will probably also be our starting middle linebacker this year. If he get hurt we are screwed, but if he stays health we could be GOOD....
