Any one going to the AFCA convention looking for a roommate? I have a room booked or I'm far enough out that I could cancel it.

I will be there from Saturday-Wednesday! I also agree with those that say it is well worth going.

Any one wear Maui Jims? I got a pair 4 years ago and love them. They hold up and are super light weight. I am thinking of getting a new pair just as a backup.

I had lunch with them once a week (in season only) No rules... I have 1-5 captains and they usually play both ways, but some times they are not even starters. Doesn't mean they can't lead.

Only a varsity team. This will be my 10th year at this school. We started a 9th and 10th grade team my first year and have been able to compete at a very high level. Last season our numbers dropped big time and are not getting any better. We were a very good team last season with only 22 varsity kids. This year we should be OK but the future doesn't look so good. Three sets of brothers move because of jobs, two moved because of custody issues, and two brothers moved after a family member pasted away. Ten kids moving will kill a small program. Anyone ever had a scrimmage game each week with the kids that will not play much? If so, some of the guys will need to play later in the week. Looking for ways to keep them interested because we need a JV the following season. In Michigan you can do a total of 4 scrimmages so we did this during the season so the 9th and 10th graders who weren't playing much could play, and the still suit up for the game on Friday. In MI we can only do 1 game a week. Which is why I like the quarter rule in some states, but would hate to keep track of that stuff.

We had this issues for several years and we found other schools in the same boat and played an 8-man JV schedule while the varsity played 11 man. It wasn't to hard and the kids go to play a ton and developed a ton.

1) Apply and get accepted to the leadership counsel. This also means getting 2 letter of rec from non coaches and family members (teachers) 2) Complete the leadership counsel, we go through a book and have weekly meetings for 10 weeks. At a larger school I would break this up by grade and do different books each grade. 3) Be in good standing with the coach, (not an a-hole and no major rule violations) 4) Make 80% of all team activities (conditioning, summer lifting, fund raisers, etc) 5) Get elected (players and coaches vote)

Of the two I think the TEK sled is more realistic, but either way you are still hitting a sled. I'd try to find a school near you that has one and go look at them in person.

The best high school that I ever saw that did this had about 33+ kids on their freshmen and JV team and instead of two patooning they 3 teams White, Blue, and Gold, For offense and defense they would rotate by series each group. So Offense would be W,B,G and Defense Might be G,W,B and then repeat all game long. I don't remember what they did with special teams, but they had 3 guys getting reps and the lower levels and it got a lot of kids to play. Sometimes in the 4th quarter they would keep a certain group out there. They also seemed to make the 3 group equal.

Who would you suggest going to see? The HS and the international session are at the same times and they have: Marcus Colvin, Chamindade Julienne (OH) High School 8 Bob Burt, Cypress (CA) High School - Underneath Zone Coverage Concepts John Fiore, Montclair (NJ) High School versus Kaoru Kubota, QB Club, Inc. (Japan) – Football In Japan: Popularity and Media Influence on Growing the Game Stan Bedwell, North Dakota State College of Science – Worst to First: Building a Championship Team Larry Legault, Thonon Les Baines (Switzerland) – Musings on 16 Years of American FB in Europe I've coached HS and will likely get back into it... I'd like to go coach in Europe or overseas someday. Coach: Stan Bedwell is worth the price of admission alone...an outstanding young offensive coach at NDSCS who has played and coached all over Europe -- well worth your time and attention. Thank you for the info... I will be sure to check him out.

Figures it would be too good to be true.... Basically have a better chance of winning a bronze medal in female gymnastics... Do you know what the certification process is in Canada versus the US?

I'm in year 22 of coaching. Feel like I know nothing. Contemplating getting out after my kids go through (youngest son is 7th grader). Over a 15 year period won 80% of our games include two sectional titles. Last two years we have gone 3-17. It's like getting kicked in the balls by a donkey. School is in one of the toughest leagues in the country. I have a lot of excuses I could use...but getting better is at the top of the list. I'm a Cancer. Love long walks on the beach. I also am @coachinggripes And the real me is tothehouse Though Griping is much more fun. I love @coachinggripes I can relate to almost all of those gripes...

Hey guys... Just booked my flight for the AFCA Convention in Louisville for Jan 10 - Jan 14. Would love to get together one of the nights with guys from the site and put a face to a name if possible. I'll be flying in on Friday January 9th at around Midnight, so anytime Saturday on is good for me. Really looking to make a push for some jobs and want to make some contacts. If anyone has been to one of these before, I'd love some insight as to how it runs. Just let me know if you guys want to get together. Last time I did this, I got to meet a few of you guys in the Miami area while my wife and I were on our honeymoon, so hoping to have another good trip with some guys from Huey. Coaches: Don't miss this session Monday morning -- outstanding international coaches presenting: International Session at AFCA ConventionWho would you suggest going to see? The HS and the international session are at the same times and they have: Marcus Colvin, Chamindade Julienne (OH) High School 8 Bob Burt, Cypress (CA) High School - Underneath Zone Coverage Concepts John Fiore, Montclair (NJ) High School versus Kaoru Kubota, QB Club, Inc. I already loved Canada, now I love it even more... How does one get a teaching job in Canada? Do they even have PE as a class? I would coach football for free with a salary like that.

It is decent. I often think they have too many people speaking at once as there are often 2 or 3 guys that I would like to hear talk and I have to pick. I always view clinics as a way to get one or two ideas to do things better and I think this always happens at this clinic.

I don't really watch the NFL except for the Super bowl which I watch for commercials, but I will watch just about any college or high school game. I do go in to coaches mode when I am watching though. It is hard watch games with people who don't know what they are talking about, live or in person.

I coached Magic Johnson's son, when he played Jr High Football. At the time Magic wasn't really involved in his life, but Magic's parents were. Kid was a good hard working kid.

I have never given out playbooks. I will give them a cheap notebook at let them make their own. Otherwise we show it in a power point, show video clips, walk through it, run through it and run it.

A former HC(All-American WR) asked me that one day and I said that I didn't know. He said it just makes more sense to call that a 7 tech and the call a head up a on a TE a 6 and inside shoulder a 6i. I agreed and have called it that since then. It's whatever is easier for the kids to me and I have no reason to call it something if it doesn't fit and make sense. Just because it is tradition doesn't make it right. Any thoughts or a little historical background please? For us, a 1 tech. is inside shade of the guard, a 2 tech. is head up the guard, and a 3 tech. is outside shade of the guard. 4, 5 and 6 are the same alignments vs. the OT and 7, 8 and 9 and are the same alignments vs. a TE. I have never understood 4i, 6i, etc. Why not just 123, 456, and 789? That's what makes the most sense to me. Fritz Shurmur in one of his books advocates using the 123, 345, 789 and I have used that ever since.. probably about 15 years ago.

How much of a language barrier is there? I am recently out of a job and if I found the right job over there I would leave in a week. However I languages is my weak point. I would try to learn as quickly as possible, but I had two years of German in HS and got D's. A's in every other class but just don't pick up languages well.

With overtime in college and high school you need different charts depending on if your playing for the win or the tie. 10 years go or so College didn't have OT.
