Our program like many of your programs selects a different theme for each season. This year we are contemplating different options. Please anyone share any themes or mottos that have worked well in your program. Also share any activities you used to embody the theme or instill it.

we're coming off a real rough season so we'll be stealing the bo schembechler line of "those who stay will be champions" this off season

That's a good one, I think. I like it. We need one, something about hard work and dedication, particularly in the weight room. Because when teams are stronger than us, we lose. Now there's more to it than that, for sure, but the teams that we can't bully, beat us every time this season. So we probably need to figure out some kind of motto related to that, hard work and dedication.

dc207 how about something like "Games Are Won In The Off Season" or a sign in the weight room saying "This Is Where Games Are Won"

dc207 how about something like "Games Are Won In The Off Season" or a sign in the weight room saying "This Is Where Games Are Won" Absolutely, that's along the lines of what we are thinking. Good one. We have been trying to convince, trick, make the kids lift and work out hard, but only some of them got the message. Surprise, the one's that did, just had an excellent season. Imagine that. I'm gonna mention that one to our head coach, "This is Where Games are Won".

"One at a time". This is the saying we are tossing around. This past season we had so many mental lapses. We will try to incorporate it this way: One lift at a time, one rep at a time, one play at a time, one day at a time.

One of my favorites, I haven't used it in 8 years, but I think we're bringing it back this year: "No Distractions, Just Destruction" I coach in urban area with lots of distractions, poor economy, partying issues, unrealistic parents, etc....and I'm hoping this slogan will sum up what it means to play team football.

T. O. T. A. L. -- Taking Ourselves To Another Level
Incorporate "Total" into every thing you do, talk about... make it a daily thing. TOTAL focus. TOTAL effort. TOTAL commitment. Weekly/daily talk about things with "total" as being the center of it... becoming a TOTAL athlete. TOTAL teammate. TOTAL student... etc.
Those That Will Have Fruit Must Climb the Tree.
Set up your goals in the form of a tree - branches being objectives, fruit being trophies, championships.
the branches should be a progression of things ... offseason goals (strength, speed, etc.) being lower, then move up to "preseason/non conference" stuff, then conference stuff ... conference championship being fruit - state championship being fruit, etc.
your weekly/daily motivational speeches need to focus on "keep climbing" (keep working)...

coaching4life.us/Maybe a bit different than a theme for a season but we use this program through the season and off season and it is great! Like I said not necessarily a theme for the specif season but something that you may want to look into.

"Leave It"
We had this posted outside the entrance of the field house and also on the wall before the exit towards the game field.
Kids would touch it on the way in, so they knew that everything that just happened at school or with their girlfriend was gonna be forgot about before they entered the field house. They would also touch the one on the way out to to remind themselves to "leave it" all on the field.

We did F.A.M.I.L.Y this past year and it was awesome. We broke everything down to family. Taught on the points of Family each night during camp, and continued the theme and it's components every Monday with Scouting Report. F-Faith, A-Attitude, M-Mental Toughness, I-Integrity, L-Love, Y-You the player or representative of the institution, program (football family), religion, and your family at home. All very good and useful.

I saw something 2 years ago at a high school in Texas. Think it was Belton HS. They had something to the nature of 1% or 1-0. From what I got from it was that, "Your goal should be to 1-0. You can only win 1 game a week so why focus so much on the season as a whole". I liked it. I am not sure if this is exactly what it means, but that is what I got from it.

I am contemplating doing something with UNCOMMON (from Tony Dungy's book). This year we did DO HARD THINGS (http://www.therebelution.com/books/). It was very successful. A couple of years ago we used TURN UP THE HEAT (http://www.212movie.com/), which was also very successful.

Looking for something like "In It to Win It". Trying to set overall goal big, State Championship. Realize that some may think that should always be your goal but not realistic in some cases. We've been beat in second round last 4 years, trying to get past that this next year. Any ideas?

One year a local "Stop" sign sign had the word "DON'T" spray painted diagonally across in in big black letters. When the town replaced it, we asked them for it and hung it inside the weight room. Kids tap it before they go lift and we take it down and bring it out onto the field with us for games. Its turned into a real team symbol for us and help us instill a "never quit" attitude.

We put up a sign in our weight room that read - Your competition got stronger and faster today. DID YOU? Reminds them that they have to keep working, because the other teams are. We also used the them Pay the Price a couple years ago and it has stuck.

We have some ego issues and some selfishness over the past few years. Most of the main issues have graduated, but there are still some younger brothers coming up, so we are thinking ..."Band of Brothers"

What an outstanding acronym. I mean I've seen some before but T.O.T.A.L. is the best thus far. This will fit in great with our 5 Pillars of Success: 1) TOTAL Commitment 2) TOTAL Discipline 3) TOTAL Effort 4) TOTAL Toughness 5) TOTAL Pride The obvious question from them will be...why total? To take ourselves to another level. Thank you so much Coach.
