Ask him what days he can attend on the Sunday prior to the practice week and tailor meaningful minutes for him to coach up points of emphasis from the previous week's game.

Book group. We developed a leadership team this year consisting of 6 seniors, 4 juniors, and 2 sophomores. They read a book (Chop Wood, Carry Water). What did you like about the book? Was it effective? What book, if any, will you use this year?

Coaches,
I admit I've been guilty of saying, "we need someone to step up and be a leader" and other phrases to that effect without offering any real way to do it.
I wouldn't expect to tell our athletes we need great double teams on a 3 tech without providing them reps and feedback to do so.
To that end, do any of you have an in-season leadership curriculum or reps or concepts that you utilize to essentially provide reps much like you'd do for a hard skill such as reads or meshes or spilling or...?
Thanks in advance.

We handed out 2 stickers for "A" honor roll and one sticker for "B" honor roll for each quarter. We also gave out stickers for each sport the student-athlete participated in outside of football. Finally we had a system to recognize the wt room too. Those stickers were all earned on an individual basis prior to the first game. What was your weight room system?

While the d-bag coach thread is humorous and getting a lot of miles, how about anecdotes of the truly classy coaches out there?
Like the guy who could put up 50 on you in a quarter and instead runs dive with his 5th string full back for the second half? Or, the coach who takes the time post game to approach one of your stud players who played his heart out only to come up short to simply say he played a helluva game and will have a great college career?

We try to get every kid on at least one special team. Best kid plays on varsity and JV kids get meaningful minutes.
We all know football is hard, especially when there's only one game per week unlike hockey, lacrosse, baseball, etc. where once preseason is done, it's a day or two of practice and then a game, repeat. When one considers how much practice time goes into one event for football and an athlete knows they don't have a shot of playing unless their team is up or down big, I can't say that I necessarily blame them for not coming out.
When I was growing up, there'd be 15 kids on a team who knew that they were "teammates" in the truest sense, essentially helping the starters/players get better each week through scout contributions. Maybe it was the compliance culture of yesteryear (do what coach says, don't ask why, play because everyone else does, never quit because your parents wouldn't tolerate it, don't complain, etc.) but teammates would be in it for the long haul.
I feel this is contributing the rise of the "individual" sport (XC, track, golf, cycling, etc.)...every kid gets the opportunity to compete towards a team effort even if they finish last.

I was given a link to the site because a player of mine that just finished his football career sent me a link to the profile it generated for him after taking a survey. It was similar to a personality test. The profile listed strengths and weaknesses and general athletic character traits. Seems like a good tool for kids to reflect on who they are and then think about that as they navigate a season/life.

I'm going to run flag football at our local college gym all winter long. I will do "sharks and minnows" with a football in hand for K-2, flag grades 3 & 4 and especially hit flag for grades 5 & 6.
Going to start there and make sure the kids have fun, everyone touches the ball, have snacks and let parents know they have an athletic option for their kids that doesn't entail sign ups, driving 2 hours one-way for tournaments, or worry about what team their kid gets selected to.

There's a time and a place for language. Working with kids is no place to use foul language unless you're cool with them doing the same. Around here, you wouldn't have a job for very long.
Hanging with your boys on a Saturday night watching college ball? Have at it.
I'm continually amazed by the mantra that football is a game of discipline that is often directly contradicted by those running the show whether through foul language or losing their minds on the sideline or saying something inappropriate to parents or degrading an athlete at practice or...

When I played every time we were on the practice field and a police car went by with its lights on our coach would look at three or four of my teammates to see if they were about to run. Kids were tougher than a two dollar steak.

Buddy I coach with worked with a guy who called his Sam the Will and something else backwards. Guy said he learned it that way 40 years ago and he wasn't going to change it. As long he's consistent, no problem.

You're not going to win by challenging/changing it in front of everyone.
I'd talk to the coach privately with specific examples and explain how it affects you and the team without attacking the coach.
If it doesn't get better or gets worse, get out.

Coaches,
When you conduct a fundraiser, do you have a minimum requirement for each player to raise in order for them to get any gear you may hand out?

Just throwing other stuff out there Padded girdle Bag Practice jersey Socks The last school I was at also put padded girdles in the pack. It’s a double bonus...kids don’t have to wear a piece of clothing that has another dudes man sweat and coaches don’t have to collect and inventory girdles. We do this. We also collect girdles from graduating players if they don't think they will ever use it. They are washed and serve as replacements if a current athlete loses the one that was given to him. Or, he can buy his own.

Doing agilities as part of our warm up each day.
Putting a slide that says, "shhh...don't tell your buddies but send coach a message that you saw this slide" every once in awhile into Hudl clips to encourage kids to watch. We'll give out t's or food or...for the "winners."
Email teachers of players before, during and AFTER the season to demonstrate a year long commitment to players.
Send thank you cards to supporters.
Incentivize summer workouts. Make 10 workouts get x, 14 get y, 16 get z, etc.
If a team deserves it, do something fun (even if it's midseason). We've said something like, "today we're going to do interval training on the sidewalks. We're going to sprint, then walk, sprint then walk." We'll end up at the bowling alley where the kids are broken into teams for some fun competition and bonding.

Do you have any outdoor education programs near your area? These types of groups are all about team building through deliberate initiatives designed to first get comfortable/understand one another and then what to do to communicate when things are going right and when they are going wrong. The critical piece to the event lies in the debriefing of it afterward. You could observe what an organization does on the first days of bringing new groups together. Every group has the potential for four stages of development. There is Forming (getting together, everyone's on their best behavior because it's "new"), Storming (the rise of conflict and pushback, testing boundaries, etc.), Norming (groups begin to accept the various members of the group, respect the boundaries, etc.) and Performing (ideally, achievement toward stated common goals). Not all teams get to performing and often teams will digress as they progress. www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_86.htmen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuckman%27s_stages_of_group_development

The irony is that there isn't a coach out there that will say you can win without being disciplined...but there are many coaches who lose their own discipline in the moment.
I've done it and am not proud of it.

4th and 2 from spread/shield punt and snap it to an upback RB on some sort of power pull to get some momentum? Maybe. A slim maybe.

If it were invented anywhere else it would have been called a teethbrush.
